THE TAKE

A head-to-head duel for second place in Group D takes place in Istanbul, Turkey, where Efes Pilsen welcomes Real Madrid on Wednesday evening. The two teams are part of a four-way tie for second at 2-2 along with Partizan Belgrade and Panionios On Telecoms, two wins behind undefeated group leader CSKA Moscow. Efes Pilsen released center Dwayne Jones this week and does not have Mario Kasun back yet, but still counts on a powerful frontcourt ready to stop Madrid’s star power forward Felipe Reyes. Kerem Gonlum may be the right man to stop Reyes due to his rebounding skills and timing, while center Kaya Peker and versatile forward Michalis Kakiouzis are set to see extended playing time in this game. Head coach Ergin Ataman also uses small lineups at times, with Preston Shumpert at power forward. Kakiouzis will test his shooting skills against Axel Hervelle, while Peker will have a strong matchup against Jeremiah Massey, as center Lazaros Papadopoulos is at the end of coach Joan Plaza's rotation right now, seeing very limited playing time. It will be a special game for Efes small forward Charles Smith, who won the Spanish League and the ULEB Cup titles with Madrid in 2007. Smith is a key piece for Efes's perimeter game along with swingman Bootsy Thornton and scoring guard Milos Vujanic. Vujanic could be involved in a key matchup with Raul Lopez, back in action right in time to replace injured playmaker Pepe Sanchez. Thornton will test his scoring skills against Louis Bullock, while Smith is ready to face Alex Mumbru. Efes has a strong second unit with creative point guard Ender Arslan and talented small forward Cenk Akyol. Madrid counts on combo guard Sergio Llull to break the game rhythm. Meanwhile, athletic forward Quinton Hosley was the Turkish League MVP last season and is back to make some noise. Marko Tomas should have an important matchup against Smith, as both players know each other very well. Efes needs to get Thornton and Smith involved, as well as playing slow-paced basketball to avoid fast break opportunities. Meanwhile, Madrid is more athletic and should take advantage of players like Hosley, Massey and Hervelle. Tension will be high as both teams know that this is the type of game that could point their season in the right direction.

GAME QUOTES

Efes Pilsen
  • Guard Milos Vujanic is 17 points away from reaching Tyus Edney for 20th place on the Euroleague Basketball career scoring charts. He enters this week’s game at CSKA Moscow with 1,353 points.
  • Big man Kerem Gonlum needs just 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Forward Michailis Kakiouzis is 8 points away from reaching 1,500 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Small forward Charles Smith will face his former team for the first time. Smith spent the past two seasons in Madrid, helping the club win the Spanish League and the ULEB Cup titles in 2007. Smith faced Madrid twice in the 2004-05 season when he was with Scavolini Pesaro and averaged 22 points, 3 assists and 1.5 blocks in those games.
Real Madrid
  • Small forward Quinton Hosley will play in Turkey for the first time since dominating the Turkish League last season as a member of Pinar Karsiyaka. Hosley led the Turkish League in index ranking and rebounds and was second in the league in scoring last season.

Quotes Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"I think we are in good shape and we refreshed our morale with three derby wins in the Turkish League. We respect the power of our opponent Real Madrid. They are one of the traditional teams and also one of the favorites to reach the Final Four this season. When we look from our side, I can easily say that it’s really a very critical game for us. Real Madrid is a team, which has top quality options in the paint. They have many weapons inside. But they also have a very good shooting guard like Louis Bullock. He is an excellent player, who has the vision to change the balance of the game in a second. Anyway, we are planning to use our home advantage as well as we can to win the game."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Efes Pilsen has seven players that have played in the Spanish League and that will give them all extra motivation to beat us. Efes knows about the importance of the Euroleague games as a home team and they want to be strong in their court, because the home wins are those that give you the chance to have a better record at the end of the regular season. Taking this into account, Efes Pilsen cannot commint many more mistakes because they lost to Panionios in the third week. We want to keep on improving like in the last four or five games. We will have to be strong in defense and effective in offense to win this game."

Players

VUJANIC, MILOS
Efes Pilsen
"It will be the most difficult game of the group for us, until this moment. The good thing is that we had three straight wins against the tough opponents in Turkish league, which we can take account as a good preparation for the Euroleague. Real Madrid is one of the favorites of the group which has a large roster packed with experienced stars. We have to play much better than we did in the previous home matches. This is the only way to dream about a good future in the group."
LLULL, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"Difficult game against a great team that will be backed by enthustiastic fans who live basketball like few crowds in Europe. The atmosphere at Abdi Ipekci is excellent and playing there is a big motivation for me. Both Efes Pilsen and Real Madrid are balanced teams into the duel and for us, it would be very important to win there. To do that, we have to play serious and intense. Efes is a balanced team who knows how to maintain tension throughout the 40 minutes and we cannot lose concetration, as they could take advantage of our mistakes and make us pay."
Quinton Hosley - Real MadridReal Madrid improved to 3-2 and took a step closer to its initial goal of reaching the Top 16 from Group D by downing Efes Pilsen 81-95 on the road in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday night. Efes dropped its third straight game as it fell to 2-3 in the group. Quinton Hosley led the winners with a season-high 24 points on 6-for-7 two-point and 3-for-4 three-point shooting. Jeremiah Massey added 17, Sergio Llull and Louis Bullock each had 11 while Alex Mumbru and Felipe Reyes got 10 apiece for Madrid. Charles Smith led Efes with 22 points against his former team. Milos Vujanic added 18, Bootsy Thornton had 14 and Kaya Peker 10. Hosley had 10 points in the first quarter and got some help from Massey to help Madrid take a 15-21 edge after 10 minutes. Three-pointers by Vujanic and Michalis Kakiouzis brought Efes as close as 38-39, but Hosley and Reyes stepped up to keep Madrid ahead, 40-46, at halftime. Massey took over late in the third quarter to make it a double-digit game, 61-71, at the end of this period. Efes did not recover and Madrid stayed focused to cruised to a pivotal win.

Madrid dominated the defensive board in the opening minutes, but missed several open shots. Meanwhile, Thornton got Efes going with free throws and Smith scored in penetration for a 4-2 lead. Hosley sank a mid-range jumper and soon added an outstanding fast break dunk to give Madrid its first lead, 4-6. Massey took over with an off-balance layup that Peker bettered with a three-point play. Massey answered from downtown, but Thornton kept Efes as close as 9-11. Reyes sank a six-meter jumper and even when Smith scored again, Hosley gave Madrid a four-point lead. A big offensive rebound by Massey allowed Hosley to add another layup, causing Efes to call timeout at 11-17. Reyes buried another long jumper while Mumbru added a layup off a steal to cap a 0-8 Madrid run. Smith hit a three-pointer from the corner and Vujanic added a free throw to get Efes within 15-21 after 10 minutes.

Charles Smith - Efes PilsenRaul Lopez took over with a driving layup at the start of the second quarter, as Efes kept committing turnovers. Vujanic stepped up with a big basket that Mumbru erased with a put-back layup, good for a 17-25 Madrid margin. Lopez scored again in penetration while Vujanic and a put-back dunk by Thornton brought Efes back to life, 21-27. Mumbru fed Venson Hamilton for an easy layup but Vujanic struck twice from downtown to make it a two-point game. Bullock answered with a long two-pointer and Hosley nailed a triple to restore a 27-34 Madrid margin. Preston Shumpert made free throws before Thornton scored off a steal to get the crowd involved. Axel Hervelle shined with a fast break layup, which Shumpert matched at the other end. Hosley and Massey made free throws only for another dunk by Thornton and a triple by Kakiouzis to keep Efes as close as 38-39. Hosley answered from downtown and soon added a wild reverse dunk in a 0-7 Madrid run that Reyes capped with a layup. Vujanic beat the buzzer with a floating layup for a 40-46 halftime score.

Peker nailed a turnaround jumper right after the break but Mumbru bettered that with a three-pointer to give Madrid a 42-49 margin. Peker and Reyes traded baskets, as Efes tried to play more aggressive at both ends. Smith made free throws, but Bullock joined the three-point shootout to give Madrid some fresh air at 46-54. Smith dunked it off a steal in a 5-9 Efes run that Peker capped with a second-chance layup that made Madrid call timeout at 51-54. The guests tried to slow down the game tempo, while Bullock made free throws that Massey followed with a fast break dunk for a 51-59 Madrid lead. Gonlum stepped up with a layup-plus-foul but Hosley stayed on fire while Massey added an acrobatic layup to restore an eight-point Madrid margin, 54-62. Efes kept attacking the basket, as Vujanic, Kakiouzis and Smith combined for 6-of-6 foul shots but Massey silenced the crowd with a bomb from downtown. Free throws by Sergio Llull and Marko Tomas, as well as a layup by Massey boosted the guests' lead to double-digits, 61-71, after 30 minutes.

Lopez fed Hamilton for an easy basket early in the fourth quarter but Smith answered in the other end to keep Efes within 63-73. The hosts needed a quick comeback right away and Thornton tried to ignite one with a jumper. Mumbru nailed a seven-meter bomb, but Smith stepped up with a reverse layup for a 67-76 Efes deficit. Madrid called timeout and Bullock fired in a key three-pointer that Massey followed with another basket to keep the guests far ahead, 70-81. Efes tried to speed up the game tempo, trying to use short possessions to avoid running out of time. Madrid kept full control, however, finding good shots on 20-second offenses. Thornton made free throws, but Reyes matched them with a turnaround jumper while a three-pointer by Hosley sealed the outcome, 73-86, with under three minutes to go. Everything was said and done as Madrid began celebrating a very important road win.

Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"Tonight we were really very bad on defense. We were also very weak once again on rebounds. We gave the opponent very critical second chance points due to those weaknesses. We also struggled in offense. Charles Smith got tired and we were not able to put anyone else beside him to score in the critical minutes. On the other hand, Quinton Hosley plays with an average of 7 points per game, but he scored 24 points tonight to break our balance. We lost two important home games. What we need to do is to make away wins to compensate for those loses at home."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"It's a great result for us to win against a great team like Efes Pilsen. My team challenged very well tonight especially in defense. We balanced the defense and offense skillfully. We were patient enough in offense and gained what we needed. Actually we didn't dream about that big difference at the end of the game. It doesn't change that Efes Pilsen still a very dangerous team, which can beat any team anytime. I'm sure they will qualify to the next stage anyway. Maybe we can compete once again in the next round."

Players

ARSLAN, ENDER
Efes Pilsen
"We played really bad tonight. We didn't play like a team, but our opponent did it very well. They played well organized especially in offense. This is not what we are. We lost a big advantage by losing to Real Madrid at home. What we need to do is to shake ourselves. Nothing is over yet as we are still digging our chance for the next stage. But we have to play the right basketball instead of full of mistakes."
HOSLEY, QUINTON
Real Madrid
"We played pretty well on offense. The defense could be a little bit better, but you know we ruled most of the game and I have to credit my teammates who helped me create open shots. We are just trying to win every game we play. This is what we are focused on. We will see where we are at the end of the stage. I am delighted to come back to Turkey and enjoyed the game. It was really fascinating atmosphere in Abdi Ipekci."
