THE TAKE

Two domestic champions face each other in a pivotal game in Group A when Montepaschi welcomes Asvel Basket to Siena, Italy, on Wednesday. Montepaschi has already reached the Top 16, but can assure itself at least second place if it wins and Fenerbahce Ulker loses in Zagreb. Meanwhile, Asvel will clinch a Top 16 spot if it steals a road win in Siena and FB Ulker beats Cibona. Asvel has won three in a row, but Montepaschi has only lost a handful of home games - to Barcelona, CSKA and twice against Panathinaikos- in the last three years. Asvel will be once again without Curtis Borchardt, so it will have to opt for a smaller, more dynamic lineup in which Ali Traore and Victor Samnick play a major role around the baskets. Asvel has a very deep frontcourt, with Bangaly Fofana offering size and defense, Eric Campbell ready to provide shooting range and post skills and Kristjan Kangur adding versatility and determination. Traore has the tough mission to face Ksistof Lavrinovic, who will try to open the court with his three-point shooting. Campbell has a key matchup against Shaun Stonerook, another experienced big man with soft touch and high basketball IQ. Samnick has to use his physical skills and athleticism against Benjamin Eze. Asvel's main concern, however, will be stopping two-time All-Euroleague point guard Terrell McIntyre, who already led his team to rally from a 21-point deficit to beat the French champs in Lyon. Montepaschi is second in Group A with a 7-1 record and locked at least second place due to its lead against Asvel and Fenerbahce Ulker, that tied for third place each with a 3-5 record. Asvel faces a pivotal home game against Regal FC Barcelona right after the holiday break in its race to make it to the Top 16. Ksistof Lavrinovic led the winners with 16 points. Terrell McIntyre added 13, Henry Domercant had 12 while Romain Sato got 11 for Montepaschi. Mindaugas Lukauskis led Asvel with 20 points Rawle Marshall added 18 while Ali Traore and Victor Samnick each had 10 for the guests. Lukauskis allowed Asvel to get an early 11-18 lead but Lavrinovic, Nikos Zisis and Domercant fueled a 14-1 run that allowed Montepaschi to get a four-point lead, 36-32, at halftime.
