The Take

Two teams that have almost developed into archrivals lately go at each other once again when DKV Joventut hosts Unicaja in an all-Spanish Group B showdown in Badalona on Wednesday. This will mark 11th time in the last 12 months that Joventut (4-4) and Unicaja (3-5) face each other, followin three Spanish League regular season games, five Spanish League playoff games, a Spanish Supercup game and their first Euroleague regular season meeting this season. The last of those undeniably featured the most incredible ending, as Rudy Fernandez re-directed an alley-oop layup pass from Lubos Barton with one-tenth of a second on the clock to lift Joventut past Unicaja 66-68 in Malaga. Both teams have injury problems. Unicaja has seen Marcus Brown go out indefinitely while Pepe Sanchez (2.1 apg., 1.4 spg.) is once again questionable after missing last week's home loss to Maccabi. If Sanchez is finally not available, Carlos Cabezas (11.7 ppg., 2.6 apg.) will see his playing time extended, while Berni Rodriguez (12.9 ppg., 3.1 apg.) and even Jiri Welsch (11.1 ppg.) will have to help him in the point guard duties, with Kostas Vasileadis (6.5 ppg.) ready to pull the trigger off the bench. Cabezas will have to deal with playmaker Elmer Bennett (9.3 ppg., 2.8 apg.) and teen sensation Ricky Rubio (3.7 apg., 3.8 spg.), who leads the Euroleague in steals afer a seven-steal, seven-assist losing effort against Panathinaikos last week. Rodriguez knows Fernandez (15.3 ppg., 61.5% 2FG, 93.7% FT) well, as both were teammates along with Cabezas on the Spanish national team that won the World Championships last summer. Meanwhile, Welsch will have the tough mission to go against Barton (12.4 ppg., 1.8 spg.), his Czech national teammate. Sharpshooters Ferran Laviña (4.4 ppg.) and Paco Vazquez (5.8 ppg., 54.5% 3FG) will offer range and defense off the Joventut bench. The battle in the paint will be interesting, as Joventut has struggled without Andy Betts (11 ppg.) on court. Charles Gaines (8 ppg., 6.9 rpg.), Robert Archibald (7 ppg., 4.8 rpg.) and Roberto Dueñas team up in the paint along with versatile forward Drew Sullivan (6.1 ppg.). They will fight with Carlos Jimenez (8.5 ppg.) and Florent Pietrus (4.9 ppg., 4.9 rpg.), as well Daniel Santiago (11.4 ppg.), through whom Unicaja is running its offense lately. Above all, both teams know each other too well and few surprises will take place. Expect a physical game like few others as the Top 16 fight becomes more intense.

Quotes Head Coaches

DKV Joventut
"In the last games we had to play with little rest, since we had to play Thursday and Saturday. Playing two Euroleague games with a trip to Gran Canaria in the middle is tough, as we will have some time to rest, but not to practice. Some injuries we have suffered are affecting us and the situation doesn't make it easier, because Lubos Barton, for instance, has recovered but he can't practice because we practically only play. This is our main problem right now. Unicaja is a team with big names and lots of quality, and even if they have not exploded yet, they can do so at any given moment."
"These two teams have faced each other many times in recent months and surely know each other well from the tactical point of view, although there can always be room for something new, in the case of a player being in better form at any given moment as compared to another in the season. Playing away from home, we have to maintain control of our nerves, be very attentive, very concentrated, know to choose well the rhythm and repeat some of the adjustments that worked well the last itme we played. In other ways, we'll have to correct some things, mostly on offense, that at times in that last game did not go well for us."

DKV Joventut
"We have faced Unicaja in several occasions lately, but this Euroleague game is really important for both teams. To get into the Top 16 we have to win as many games as possible, we play this game at home and we have to use that factor in our favour, and we will have to add maximum concentration in the game against Unicaja. I have a good relationship with coach Sergio Scariolo, as he was the first coach I ever had in the Spanish League. I think we have to worry about ourselves because I believe we have played fine in the last games and we have to get our confidence back, and that will give us our best level again."
"We have to go to their court and we want to achieve the victory. We're going to prepare well in order to win this game. We have already played various times this season and we know what they will want to do. We know their players better and as such it might be a little easier to prepare ourselves, but we also need to see what chances they make. Anyway, I believe it's an advantage to know another team so much because you then now how they play normally. When we beat them last time in the Spanish League, they didn't have Rudy Fernandez, who is an important player for them. Without him, their team changes, but we have also won against them with Rudy on court and now we'll have to do it again."
Ricky Rubio - DKV Joventut It was a memorable night for fans in Badalona who watched DKV Joventut put on a show for the ages in a 105-52 blasting of Unicaja. The margin of victory was the third largest in Euroleague history. In the 11th game between these two teams in the last year, Unicaja committed 32 turnovers, which allowed the hosts to run, picking up easy and spectacular baskets, continually building points to a lead that reached 25 points at halftime and progressed from there. The win allowed Joventut to climb to a 5-4 record in Group B for third place, while Unicaja dropped to 3-6. Charles Gaines led the winners with 18 points, Robert Archibald added 17, Rudy Fernandez posted 14 and Marcelinho Huertas 12. The teenage Ricky Rubio had a huge game with 6 points, 6 assists and 7 steals. For Unicaja, only Berni Rodriguez scored in double digits with 15 points on 3-of-6 from downtown. Jiri Welsch added 9. The biggest-winning margin ever in Euroleague history belongs to Montepaschi Siena, which beat Buducnost 112-49 in February 2003. CSKA crushed Krka 89-35 in November 2003.

Archibald opened the game with a three-point play, but Rodriguez replied with a three for Unicaja. Joventut scored inside and outside with Rudy capping a mini-run with a three to make it 10-5. On defense, Archibald blocked Welsch's drive as Unicaja struggled to score. Rodriguez put an end to that with a three-point play of his own to keep the tempo up. With both teams controlling the ball and almost no turnovers, it was time for the defenses to play harder. Gaines finished an alley-oop play feed from Rudy, and then Rubio fed Roberto Dueñas on the following attack to make it 14-10 for the hosts. The Joventut defense stepped up, and after Daniel Santiago missed a layup, Linho Huertas blasted a three for a 17-10 advantage. Unicaja looked confused on offense now, and the hosts even forced an 8-second violation. Paco Vazquez then poured salt on the wounds with back-to-back triples making it a 15-0 run for a 25-10 score. Carlos Cabezas finally scored from the line to end the Unicaja drought as Joventut coach Aito Garcia Reneses followed his substitution pattern and played 10 players in the first quarter.

Carlos Cabezas - UnicajaArchibald found a good position inside to inaugurate the second quarter, and Ignacio De Miguel replied in the same manner. Unicaja seemed to show more patience on offense now, but Joventut somehow managed to find a fast and fancy way to keep scoring. Gaines made a layup and Rudy added a three to make it 11-4 in the second quarter for a 21-point Joventut lead. Another alley-oop from Rudy to Gaines ignited the fans and Santiago finally slammed the ball to get Unicaja on the board 40-19. The teams traded free throws, but Vazquez blasted his third three to maintain Joventut's big advantage. The turnovers column for Unicaja was up to 10, reflecting what was happening on the scoreboard. The guests had scored 11 of their 26 points from the free-throw line when the scoreboard showed 45-26. Archibald however, soon converted a three-point play, drawing a Santiago foul and Rubio blasted a three – Joventut's seventh – for a 51-26 lead. After a free throw by Carlos Jimenez however, Archibald slammed again to close the first half with a 53-28 Joventut edge.

Elmer Bennett found the way to the basket to open the second half, but 5 straight points by Berni, including a triple, made it 55-33. Welsch scored another outside shot, but Lubos Barton did the same as Joventut's defense found its rhythm again and collected one more steal. However, Unicaja stayed put as Welsch had a monster block over Ferran Laviña and soon Santiago slammed one for a 58-37 lead. However a huge injection of morale for the hosts arrived when Rubio blocked Cabezas's shot and then Rudy finished off on the other end with a huge dunk to make it 66-40. The hosts' defense forced a shot-clock violation, Rubio fed Barton for a dunk and then Rubio stole the ball and found Huertas for a three to make it 71-40. Archibald's free throws made it 75-42 as Unicaja was totally out of the game with 23 turnovers. However Welsch had time for a three to close the third quarter with a 77-45 Joventut edge.

Joventut started the last period slower thanks to its big cushion as Andrew Sullivan made it 81-47. Youngster Alfonso Sanchez made his Euroleague debut for Unicaja – a sign that coach Sergio Scariolo knew his team could not win the game. A few missed shots on both sides were followed by Gaines points from the charity line. Then he added a layup to make it 85-48. Kostas Vasiliadis had free throws for Unicaja, but Rubio owned the game now with steals, assists and points for a 90-51 Joventut lead. The difference surpassed the 40 points when Huertas hit free throws with two minutes to go, leaving things clear: the win was staying in Badalona.

Head Coaches

DKV Joventut
"I am really surprised with our game, because we faced it with physical problems. I have to congratulate all my players. It is a strange score because we were expecting a difficult game beforehand. I would like to ask our fans why don't they come to see the games, and to the ones that come if they don't explain the good play of their team at home. This game can have two meanings, and it could give us a state of eurphoria against Barcelona this weekend in the Spanish League that can be dangerous. We have to be humble, and we are on our way to the Top 16."
"We put together a bad show tonight, we will have to wake up from this soon and be back to the real world. We were helpless against Joventut's aggressiveness and good play. We felt weak and that affected us and demoralized us. I would like to apologize to Unicaja fans and all basketball fans in general for the game we played."

DKV Joventut
"We played all the game with intensity and I think we showed we can be at the top. Only in the last minutes we could start to celebrate the win because we were focused on the game, and we knew that Unicaja could react at any given moment. We weren't going through our best moments, but I have to thank our fans for helping us out during the game."
"Everything went bad for us tonight. We played awful and they rolled all over us. But we have to get back to work, and think that there is a next game that we have to win."
