THE TAKE

Climamio aims for its first Euroleague victory of the season when it hosts Olympiacos Piraeus on Wednesday night at Land Rover Arena in Bologna, Italy. The game will see Climamio point guard Tyus Edney go up against the team he played for last season, while forward David Bluthenthal faces for the first time the coach he won a Euroleague title with at Maccabi Tel Aviv, Pini Gershon. Bologna came up short in its season-opener against LeMans last week 82-71, while Olympiacos started up with a 97-78 victory against Tau Ceramica. The home team features a balanced attack, with Marco Belinelli, Preston Shumpert and Bluthenthal, who accounted for 17, 16 and 17 points, respectively, last week. Olympiacos was in fine form to start the season last week, with rookie swingman Alex Acker hitting for 25 points and 13 rebounds, Henry Domercant adding 19 and big Andrija Zizic 18. One big difference between the teams is their rebounding. Olympiacos's 51 rebounds last week were most in the league, while Climamio's 25 were second fewest. Fabrizio Frates's side will need to work hard against Zizic, Ryan Stack and Sofoklis Schortsanitis in the middle, while getting its guards to stop Acker, Domercant and Scoonie Penn from crashing the boards. Climamio's James Thomas led the team with 9 rebounds last week, but Bluthenthal, center Vassil Evtimov, reserve Tomas Ress and hard-nosed forward Stefano Mancinelli will all need to step up. Edney and Steffen Hamann will have a big role to play trying to wear down their counterpart, Penn, but the most explosive matchups will take place at the wing positions. Belinelli and Acker are two young stars who could be battling for supremacy for years to come. Bologna's Kristaps Janicenoks and Shumpert are complementary players, as are Domercant and Damir Mulaomerovic for the visiting team. This game will be a test for both teams, as Olympiacos looks to prove it can win on the road, while Climamio knows it must avoid an 0-2 start.

Quotes Head Coaches

FRATES, FABRIZIO
Climamio Bologna
"It's the first Euroleague game at home this season and we want to take this win. We lost the 'derby' against Virtus in the Italian League, but I saw good things from my team – temperament and will. I watched the other 'derby' – Olympiacos against Panathinaikos – and it has been a great game, with a lot of energy and intensity. Olympiacos, who we face tomorrow, showed a lot of skills. It is a top-level team this year, and if we think they have lost Macijauskas... Anyway, they are built to win the Euroleague. Domercant, Penn, Zizic, Acker are all strong players. Olympiacos is a very strong team, which can give Schortsianitis five minutes only and stay close against Panathinaikos. We have to play with intensity and defense to avoid Olympiacos's streaks. They have a lot of options and can score three-pointers in bunches."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"The thought that Climamio Bologna is in bad shape or they have suffered back-to-back losses doesn't even cross our minds. It is the first Euroleague game at their home court in a full gym and they want to win. They will give their best to make it. Our recent loss to Panathinaikos definitely cost us, but we are professional. We have to learn by our mistakes and move on. We can't and mustn't stop at this defeat. Wednesday's game is completely different and our goal is to win, of course, like all the games. I know that 200 fans will travel with our team and definitely we don't want to let them down as we did in the game against Panathinaikos."

"Leaving Olympiacos was a surprise for me, but that's basketball and each side went its way during the summer. Last season, however, has been really positive for me. We started slowly, losing several games, but we found the way to play together and reached the quarterfinals. Against Maccabi we lacked only a bit of experience. If I have to mention one of my past mates, I would say Schortsianitis: the more he plays, the more he will improve in the future. He just needs playing time, because his athletic potential is amazing. Although Scoonie Penn is now playing in my past role, it won't be a duel between me and him. It's only Fortitudo against Olympiacos. They're a strong, talented, complete team and it will be even more difficult because they have big Euroleague experience - both the team and the coach. We came from a loss in a derby, but they do, too. This can reset both teams' minds to think in the present and not in the past. We want to get in the win column from our arena. We haven't won on the road yet, and that's why our home court has to impregnable. In the Euroleague, the home court can be even more decisive. We want to keep it unbeaten with the hope of winning some games on the road later. Against Olympiacos, you can win only if you play strong and concentrated."
McNAMARA, JERRY
Olympiacos
"It is our first road game and we will go there to take the victory. Our mission is difficult since we are going to compete away from home, but we are looking forward to going there and fighting. Every time you play on the road, you must not let the opponents take an early lead, because it is always difficult to come back. We need to play good defense, execute well and impose our rhythm, which is going to be the key for us. If we focus on our defensive plan and take advantage of our offensive plays, everything is going to be fine. We all know that it is hard to come back from a tough loss, but the game against Climamio is a different story. We are a little bit disappointed, but we have a chance here and we are looking forward to winning this one."
Henry Domercant - Olympiacos Olympiacos Piraeus took at least a share of the Group A lead on Wednesday with a convincing win over Climamio Bologna, 86-93, at Land Rover Arena in Bologna, Italy. Henry Domercant scored 29 points to lead coach Pini Gershon's side to its second win and first on the road. Olympiacos controlled the tempo and denied Climamio’s attempts to rally. The visitors took a 14-20 lead in the first period and never trailed afterwards, despite numerous Climamio runs. Steffen Hamann fed David Bluthenthal on a backdoor to make it 45-46 early in the third quarter, but Domercant and Olympiacos responded with an 0-7 spurt to take control for good. Sofoklis Schortsianitis dominated underneath with 17 points and 7 rebounds in 16 minutes, while Alex Acker scored 11 and grabbed 8 boards, while Andrija Zizic finished with 11, Panagiotis Vassilopoulos 9 points and 10 rebounds and Scoonie Penn 8 points and 6 assists. Preston Shumpert led Climamio with 21 points, while Vasco Evtimov added 16 points and 8 rebounds. Marco Belinelli and Kristaps Janicenoks had 10 each.

Shumpert got Climamio going with a jumper, which was matched by Vassilopoulos on the other end. Belinelli hit a pair of foul shots before Acker attacked the Climamio zone with a corner triple and Zizic made a long jumper to give the visitors a 4-7 lead. Back-to-back jumpers by Shumpert and Bluthenthal sparked a 7-2 Climamio run, which Belinelli capped with a three-pointer to make it 11-9. Olympiacos, however, fed the ball inside as Zizic scored easy baskets while Domercant drove the lane twice, pushing the guests to 14-20 and forcing Bologna boss Fabrizio Frates to call timeout. After Vassilopoulos dunked on a fastbreak, a three-pointer by Belinelli and a layup from Shumpert brought Climamio within 3, but Domercant froze the crowd with a buzzer-beater triple that gave Olympiacos a 19-25 lead after 10 minutes.

Shumpert continued to score as the second period got underway with consecutive three-pointers that helped Climamio get within 27-29. Schortsianitis became a factor, drawing fouls, nailing free throws and scoring in a one-on-one situation against Bologna’s Evtimov. Olympiacos's lead grew to 27-34 midway through the quarter. An offensive rebounds by Evtimov revived Climamio, but Schortsianits made him pay again as the visitors extended their lead to 30-38 on a Damir Mulaomerovic jumper. Acker’s three-pointer pushed Olympiacos to 32-41, before Climamio answered with 5 quick points from Daniele Cavaliero and Evtimov to trim the gap to 4. Domercant, however, made an easy layup to help give Olympiacos a 38-43 halftime advantage.

Climamio rode on the back of Hamann in the beginning of third quarter. After Vassilopoulos's three-pointer, Hamann scored a jumper, fed Cavaliero for a corner triple and found a Bluthenthal’s backdoor cut to bring Climamio within 45-46. Olympiacos focused and came back with an 0-7 spurt, fueled by Domercant's huge three-pointer and capped by a Zizic layup. Shumpert and Bluthenthal broke the hosts’ drought, but Domercant finished a fastbreak and made it 49-55 midway through the period. Stefano Mancinelli came off the bench to push Climamio to 53-56, but Olympiacos now ruled under the boards and started to run. Fastbreaks by Vassilopoulos and Schortsianitis, who dunked, lifted the Reds before another Domercant three-pointer push the Olympiacos lead to 11 points. Mancinelli, however, nailed a triple which limited the damage to 58-66 after 30 minutes.

Olympiacos opened the fourth quarter looking to seal the win. Domercant’s put-back dunk and Schortsianitis’s power moves helped the visitors increase the lead to 59-73. Another fastbreak dunk from "Baby Shaq" made the rim shake, as it became clear which direction the game was headed in. Free throws from Zizic made it 61-77 with six minutes to play. Domercant’s fourth three-pointer of the night re-established a 16-point edge. Hamann, though, continued to fight for the home team, making foul shots during a 9-2 Climamio run, which Janicenoks capped with a triple, making it 73-82 with three minutes to play. Olympiacos tried to take valuable time off the clock, but suffered turnovers, which Evtimov exploited with a layup to close the gap to 7. However, after three scoreless minutes, Penn made four straight foul shots and drew Hamann’s fifth foul, signaling the home team's end and allowing the Reds to celebrate their second straight Euroleague win.

Head Coaches

FRATES, FABRIZIO
Climamio Bologna
"You can't be happy when you lose. But we have to be honest because Olympiacos deserved the win showing a deep bench and an higher value compared to us. They had different goals as they are showing they want to make it to the Final Four. We played a vigorous game, going down many times, but finding the way to stay close. But they are a great team and they don't make mistakes in the key possessions. Even if we are 0-2, we have to look forward because tonight we made right steps forward."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"My compliments to Climamio. They're a good team, especially at home, where they won’t be an easy opponents for anybody. It was the third important game in a row – Tau, Panathinaikos and Climamio. The pressure we had was the reason why we didn’t ice the game before. To be even stronger, our team has to play good quarter by quarter. In fact, when we were up by 16, I told the players to play like we would be down by 16. Losing the Greek League game with Panathinaikos gave us a psychological shock, but I'm satisfied for what we have done here. Ending with 114 evaluation points is not easy in the Euroleague."

Players

CAVALIERO, DANIELE
Climamio Bologna
"We have just one way out: work, work, work. In the first half, we played a good game against one of the best teams in Europe. In the third quarter, we missed too many shots and we struggled against their tempo. We have to stay together, playing hard. Otherwise, it will be even more difficult."
SHUMPERT, PRESTON
Climamio Bologna
"All the players are working hard to overcome this bad moment. Tonight we tried but Olympiacos proved they’re stronger than us. They did it in all the parts of the game - key plays, rebounding, defense. We expect other difficult games, but we have to fight and start to win in order to gain confidence."
MULAOMEROVIC, DAMIR
Olympiacos
"This second win is very important for us. Climamio has a lot of great players and they will improve during the season, so I don’t know how many teams will win in this arena. We are very motivated at this moment and if we continue this way, we could go far. The key of the game was our mentality. We started aggressive and we stopped any of their runs, finishing the job in the last quarter. I'm always happy to come back in Bologna, where the fans remember my season here. I will always remember them."
DOMERCANT, HENRY
Olympiacos
"I think we definitely controlled the game all night long. We have great point guards who took good decisions and found the way to give shooters the rhythm. I exploited this scoring a lot. I’m playing good but the reason is the team. Scoonie [Penn], Mula and Alex [Acker] knows how to let a team play and how to choose the right screens. We always talk a lot in order to find the chemistry. Playing for Pini is a great experience. You learn something new every day."
