THE TAKE

Two teams fighting for different goals will clash in Athens, Greece, where Panathinaikos hosts Unicaja in Group G on Wednesday. Panathinaikos will win Group G - and get home-court advantage against Montepaschi Siena in the upcoming Quarterfinal Playoffs - if it downs Unicaja or if Partizan loses against Lottomatica Roma in Group G’s other Wednesday night game. However if Partizan wins and Unicaja beats Panathinaikos, the Greens must face Euroleague defending champion CSKA Moscow in the playoffs without home-court advantage. Unicaja has no chance to make it to the playoffs, but will be looking for a prestigious win that may change the outcome of the 2008-09 Euroleague Basketball season. Unicaja has faced severe injury problems recently and will be without playmaker Carlos Cabezas, but several of the other injury-stricken players are on the mend. Without Cabezas around, Omar Cook will be Unicaja's starting playmaker, with combo-guard Joseph Gomis backing him up. Cook has a tough test against four-time Defensive Player of the Year and former Final Four MVP Dimitris Diamantidis. Gomis will test his creativity against three-time Euroleague champion Sarunas Jasikevicius. Panathinaikos will be concerned with stopping Thomas Kelati, who tied a competition record with 9 three-pointers last week. Kelati will get some help from Jiri Welsch, versatile forward Carlos Jimenez and team captain and defensive stopper Berni Rodriguez. Panathinaikos will probably use its best defensive players - Dusan Kecman and Nikos Hatzivrettas - against Kelati. Drew Nicholas is always ready to pull the trigger from downtown and has become a more important part of the team picture recently. Jimenez faces a tough matchup against Stratos Perperoglou, while Rodriguez must use his defensive skills against Vassilis Spanoulis. The battle in the paint will be equally interesting, as Unicaja must use Robert Archibald and Boni Ndong to stop Nikola Pekovic. Panathinaikos needs to be ready to go against Marcus Haislip and has the right man to match his versatility and athleticism in Antonis Fotsis. Mike Batiste may be a mismatch for Unicaja due to his experience and power. Kostas Tsartsatis will come off the Greens' bench to offer shooting range and experience. Unicaja must try to be all over the place on defense and stop Diamantidis and Spanoulis. Panathinaikos must try to get Pekovic involved, as he will have to be double-teamed, creating space for all its other stars. Expect Unicaja to be a tough opponent in Panathinaikos's most important game so far this season.

GAME NOTES

Panathinaikos
  • Center Nikola Pekovic leads the Top 16 in free throws made (31) and attempted (32) and is fourth in free-throw percentage (96.9%).
  • Guard Sarunas Jasikevicius is just 1 steal shy of the 100-steal plateau for his Euroleague career.
  • Guard Dimitris Diamantidis had one of the greatest performances of his Euroleague career playing against Unicaja in November 2006. Diamantidis recorded 20 points, 7 steals and 5 assists for a 30 index in the Greens’ 87-72 victory.
  • Diamantidis set a career high in scoring last week with 21 points against Partizan. He also produced career bests in free throws made and attempted when he went 11 for 11 from the line.
  • Diamantidis made his Euroleague debut at Unicaja in the opening game of the 2004-05 season, when he played 29 minutes and scored 5 points.
  • Head coach Zeljiko Obradovic celebrated his 49th birthday on Monday, one day after he coached his 1,000th career game in the Greek League against Egaleo Estia. Obradovic boasts an overall record of 767 wins, one tie and 232 losses in his coaching career with Partizan, Joventut Badalona, Real Madrid, Benetton Treviso and Panathinaikos.
Unicaja
  • Guard Berni Rodriguez is just 1 steal shy of reaching 100 for Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Point guard Omar Cook has at least 3 assists in every game this season and at least 5 assists in more than half of them. He is tied for the league lead with 5.1 assists per game.
  • Guard Thomas Kelati matched a Euroleague Basketball record with 9 three-pointers made against Lottomatica Roma last week. He tied Saulius Stombergas, who achieved the feat with Tau Ceramcia in April 2001. Kelati also scored a season-high 33 points in the game.
  • Big man Paulo Prestes made his Euroleague debut last week with 10 points in a starter’s role against Lottomatica Roma.
  • Rookie big man Vitor Faverani scored a season-high 16 points last week. He had totaled just 9 points in six previous appearances this season.
  • Guard Joseph Gomis scored a season-high 13 points against Lottomatica Roma last week.
  • Forward Marcus Haislip was a teammate of Panathinaikos guard Drew Nicholas during the 2006-07 season at Efes Pilsen.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"It is our last game in the Top 16 against a very good team, Unicaja Malaga. I believe it is going to be tough, even if they don’t have possibilities to make it to the Euroleague playoffs. In their last game against Lottomatica Roma, they had many significant absences, but they won with a great margin. The good thing is that everything depends on us. We compete at home and we need one more win to take first place in Group G and get the home advantage, so I am expecting my players to fight with all their strength."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"It's not always a pleasure to play. Many players do not like to play when nothing is at stake with a game, but then we will have to make an extra effort to focus on this game and use it to improve as a team. First of all, we have to respect the rival and the fans, and then use the game to practice hard. For us, the most important thing be it practice or a game, is play at our maximum level."

Players

NICHOLAS, DREW
Panathinaikos
"Everybody knows the group standings including the fact that Unicaja has no hopes for the playoffs. In sports, this is a dangerous situation, since they have no pressure and they can put us in trouble if we enter the arena with a lack of concentration. I guess the home advantage in the playoffs gives us the highest motivation and definitely my teammates and I are not willing to waste what we fought during the whole Top 16 for. After the back to back derbies against Olympiacos, the team suffered a loss in Belgrade, where our defense was very good and our offense really ineffective, but now the practices became much stronger and we are ready to play really hard."
Mike Batiste - PanathinaikosIn a thriller that ultimately did not affect the group standings, Panathinaikos lost all of a 22-point second-half lead before hanging on to beat visiting Unicaja 103-95 in overtime on Wednesday in Athens. Panathinaikos finished first in Group G at 5-1 with the victory, but would have done so anyway after its co-leader before Thursday, Partizan, lost on the road at Lottomatica Roma. Already-eliminated Unicaja finished 2-4 and third in the group, but almost went out in a blaze of glory after sending the game to overtime with 3 three-pointers in the last minute of regulation time. Drew Nicholas matched those 3 triples in the extra 5 minutes, however, to avoid disappointment for Panathinaikos. Mike Batiste led the winners with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Drew finished with 15, Nikola Pekovic 13 in 15 minutes, Stratos Perperoglou and Sarunas Jasikevicius 12 each. Unicaja got 21 points from Jiri Welsch, while bench players German Gabriel, Joseph Gomis and Berni Rodriguez had 17, 16 and 13, respectively, and Carlos Jimenez added 10.

Unicaja rushed ahead 0-3 on a three-pointer by Jimenez, who was very energetic in the defensive end, too. Pekovic muscled his way to the basket and a few possessions later Perperoglou used a spin move to put the hosts ahead 4-3. Unicaja was unable to find a rhythm offensively, with its players shooting 2 for 9 while Panathinaikos built a 9-5 lead on a basket by Batiste. Welsch came off the bench to answer back for the guests, but Batiste's matched him with jumper. Neither could Panathinaikos get far ahead, however, because Unicaja was playing its trademark passionate defense. When Marcus Haislip and Boniface Ndong made free throws, it was 13-13. Kostas Tsartsaris broke the tie with a jumper before Jasikevicious followed with another basket, but Haislip knocked down a triple to keep the guests close, 17-16. However, Nikos Hatzivrettas scored on an off-balanced shot before Vassilis Spanoulis stole and bolted for a fastbreak layup to give Panathinaikos a 21-16 lead after 10 minutes.

Jiri Welsch - UnicajaPekovic converted a three-point play to open the second quarter and Jasikevicius connected from beyond the arc to widen the gap to 27-16. Rodriguez stepped up with a triple of his own for Unicaja, but Jasikevicius fed Pekovic for a two-handed monster dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. Batiste got an offensive rebound and scored an easy basket, good for the first double-digit advantage, 31-21. Unicaja was giving in, however. Welsch loaded his pistol with a three-point strike and Gomis drove to the basket to cut the lead to 31-26. Out of a Panathinaikos timeout, the same duo, Welsch and Gomis, carried Unicaja within 32-30. Diamantidis gave the hosts a 36-30 lead before Welsch buried another triple to silence the crowd. Perperoglou responded from the corner, but Welsch kept scoring, now from the free-throw line. Panathinaikos finished the half strong as could be, though, as Pekovic scored a basket and the free throw that came with it to push the edge to 44-35. Then, Diamantidis stripped Rodriguez and Batiste exploded with back-to-back dunks to cap an imposing 12-2 run that fixed the halftime score at 48-35.

Rodriguez opened the second half with a layup, but Perperoglou upped the ante with a triple. Rodriguez came up big once again, punishing Panathinaikos, however Batiste and Antonis Fotsis triggered an 11-0 spurt that pushed the margin to a whopping 62-40. Despite a three-pointer by Jimenez, it was clear that the hosts were now the best team on both ends of the court. Batiste kept wreaking havoc in the paint and hit a free throw make it 65-45. Then, however, Panathinaikos got complacent and Unicaja, with Gabriel picking up the scoring slack, managed to claw its way back. With the score at 65-54, Haislip emphatically rejected Pekovic and then Jon Cortaberria knocked down a triple to trim the lead to single digits. Panathinaikos went scoreless for more than 4 minutes, whereas Haislip assisted Jimenez to cap an unexpected yet impressive 0-14 run that made it a new game at 66-59 after 30 minutes.

Carlos Jimenez - Unicaja and Antonis Fotsis - PanathinaikosUnicaja came out in the final quarter determined to complete its stunning comeback. Gomis and Gabriel each made three-pointers and Thomas Kelati scored on a wild reverse layup to slice the margin to 70-67. When Panathinaikos missed again, Gomis made it a one-point game, 70-69. After a Panathinaikos timeout, Perperoglou stole and fed Fotsis for a three-point play that sent the OAKA noise level off the meter. Then, with Perperoglou assisting again, Batiste got a basket-plus-free throw that made it 76-69. Panathinaikos was shooting a dreadful 3 –for- 19 from the three-point line until Diamantidis nailed a triple to keep Unicaja at distance, 79-72, with 3 minutes remaining. Could the guests bounce back? Though scoreless himself, Omar Cook certainly thought so, as he dished to Welsch for an easy layup and Gabriel for another triple that closed the gap to 80-77. Diamantidis scored on a drive and then stripped Gomis, but there was no conversion on the fastbreak as Welsch blocked a layup try by Spanoulis from behind. What followed in the waning minutes was Euroleague basketball at its best. First Rodriguez swished a big triple and then hot-handed Gabriel copied him to put Unicaja in front, 82-83. With 29 seconds left, Nicholas hit the long jumper to make it 84-83, only to be bettered by Welsch's triple. Diamantidis drove to the basket and scored a gutsy game-tying basket with 5:6 seconds left. Gomis tried to win it, but his shot went off the rim and the teams proceeded to overtime tied 86-86.

Nicholas fired in a triple to get the scoreboard rolling in overtime and then, after another Diamantidis steal, finished a fastbreak to establish a five-point lead, 91-86, for the Greens. Soon, Nicholas was double-trouble for Unicaja, unleashing a pair of wild three-pointers to give Panathinaikos a 99-93 lead. Contaberria's dunk in the next possession meant that Malaga had 62 seconds to try to stun the hosts again. However, Batiste did not falter from the free throw line and on the other end blocked Contaberria to seal the outcome of a great match in favor of Panathinaikos.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"We performed well for about 30 minutes, but then we stopped playing. Unicaja is a team that never surrenders no matter the score. They always play an up-tempo game and the problem was that we did not dictate the tempo tonight. We lost our composure in the second half. We stopped feeding our big players and we played the way they wanted us to play. Nevertheless, I want to congratulate my players because they played very well so far in the competition. And of course, I want to thank the fans for their big support. Thanks to the home-court advantage, I think that we have a big chance to qualify for the Final Four."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"For us the most important thing is to have our players healthy. We have faced a lot of problems this season. For instance, Ndong played only for a few minutes and Gabriel, who played today after 15 days of absence. The best thing I can say about the game is that it is very difficult for both teams to play this kind of game when a team has no chances to qualify to the next phase. We found some motivation because there are players who like to play the game whether it is a practice or a match. So, it was very important for them to win the game. Another thing I want to say is that Drew Nicholas, as was the case also in Malaga, was great in the final minutes and his shots helped Panathinaikos win the game."

Players

PERPEROGLOU, STRATOS
Panathinaikos
"We lost our composure in the second half and wasted a big lead. They scored some big triples and we let them rally back. At last, we grabbed the win and now we look forward to our next games. We played earlier this season against Siena. It’s a positive thing for us that we have the home-court advantage and I believe that with the help of our fans we’ll manage to qualify for the Final Four. Lavrinovic is a key player for them, but Siena is a team with capital T."
COOK, OMAR
Unicaja
"We always try to get better. We had guys out there who played hard and we definitely had the chance to win tonight, but they sent the game to overtime. A problem for us was that all our big men fouled out, so it was very difficult for us to contain our opponents. At times we were forced to play with four backcourt players and one big. So, Panathinaikos is a big team and they took advantage of this. I didn’t score any points, but honestly I don’t care about scoring. I might score in some games and I won’t at others. If my teammates are open, I try to find them."
