THE TAKE

Two teams coming off disappointing Top 16 openers meet in the Italian capital on Thursday when Lottomatica Roma hosts Unicaja. The two teams came aggravatingly close to starting Group G off with road wins, but nevertheless are now facing 0-2 starts. Roma missed what would have been a sensational win over CKSA In Moscow when newcomer Ibrahim Jaaber missed a free throw with 4.6 seconds remaining and CSKA raced downcourt and hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer for a 72-71 win. The good news for the Romans was the strong team effort that got the team there, led by Jaaber’s impressive debut that included 12 points and 3 assists. Head coach Jasmin Repesa’s squad will even be a bit stronger this week with the introduction of shot-blocking presence Andrea Crosariol, who joined the team too late last week to make the trip to Russia. Meanwhile Unicaja lost 64-62 at Barcelona, despite mounting a strong second-half charge to get within a basket of tying it in the closing seconds. Unicaja’s biggest problem came with handling the ball. In the first game without veteran point guard Carlos Cabezas, out with an injury, the team turned the ball over 21 times. The Unicaja backcourt, now also without injured captain Berni Rodriguez, is still pretty deep featuring Bojan Popovic, Jiri Welsch, Davor Kus and Terrel Castle. Together they’ll need to take extra care of the ball against the team ranked fourth in the Euroleague in steals, led by ball hawks Jaaber and David Hawkins. Roko-Leni Ukic, Allan Ray and Jon Stefansson round out an explosive backcourt, which creates plenty of opportunities for Erazem Lorbek inside. Lorbek may have some extra motivation after starting last season with Unicaja, where he struggles in seven games before leaving. Unicaja’s frontcourt is mostly rebuilt since then, though center Daniel Santiago is among those that played with Lorbek. However Boniface NDong, Marcus Haislip and German Gabriel are all new to the team since then and will look to cause trouble for Lorbek and veteran Gregor Fucka. With Crosariol added to the mix, Roma should have enough presence inside to fight off Unicaja’s deeper frontline, making this game fairly even on paper and setting up an exciting matchup. The key comes in the backcourt, where Kus, Castle and co. must fend off Hawkins and Jaaber to create offensive opportunities for the visitors. If Unicaja has trouble scoring, it will be in trouble: head coach Sergio Scariolo’s men are 0-3 this season when they fail to score 70 points. Keep an eye on that as these two talented team battle to get back in the Group G race in what shapes up to be another Euroleague Basketball thriller.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"We are arriving off three consecutive defeats and we still have some roster problems, but I am optimistic. Ray won't be there for us and Stefansson is recovering but Crosariol and Jaaber are here to help us. So with a little deeper bench we hope that things will be better for us."
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We are in front of a new situation for us. It will be the first time this year that we will play a game without any of the three players that we pointed as the emotional backbone and soul of the team: Carlos, Berni and Alfonso. We have to know how to overcome this with a lot of dedication and compromise. Basketball-wise we have had a good progression as results themselves show, winning many games and those which we lost were by a slim margin. But the job is getting harder by the minute so the effort gets bigger and bigger. Our rival has shown with their wins against Real Madrid and Panathinaikos and their almost-win over CSKA Moscow that they are in a real progression. Also they have added quality players which have improved the team's strength. We know the rival and the difficulties they will give to us so we hope to be there when we have to."

Players

LORBEK, ERAZEM
Lottomatica Roma
"This game is very important because it is our first Top 16 game at home and we want to do well. It is important to win. We will be facing a strong team but then again, as all Top 16 teams are. We have to seek for game control during the 40 minutes. We will have to play good defense to be able to stop their strengths."
SANTIAGO, DANIEL
Unicaja
"I have to give all the glory to God for my MVP award and because I played a good game which the team and myself personally needed. Now we all need to be together to face the next game against Lottomatica. It is a very important game to try to advance in our group. If we win there it will be a good step forward. Roma was my home for one year and I have good memories from playing there and I still have friends in the city. I am glad we are playing there."
Erazem Lorbek - Lottomatica Roma Despite having its head coach at home sick, Lottomatica Roma registered a first Top 16 victory when it manhandled visiting Unicaja 75-67 on Thursday in Group G. Assistant coach Guido Saibene guided Roma in the place of Jasmin Repesa, who was out sick with flu, to a victory that helped erase the bad week-old memory of the team's last-second loss to CSKA Moscow in the Top 16 opener. Roma is now 1-1 and tied for second place with AXA F.C. Barcelona, while Unicaja, a Final Four team last season, drops to last place at 0-2. Roko Leni-Ukic led the charge for Roma with 10 points, while David Hawkins added 11, Jon Stefansson and Roberto Gabini 10 each. Roma's defensive spark was Ibrahim Jaaber who came up with 7 rebounds and 8 steals off the bench. Unicaja got 20 points out of Marcus Haislp, 12 from Jiri Welsch and 11 from Davor Kus but suffered the absences of its signature homegrown perimeter due of Carlos Cabezas and Berni Rodriguez, both injured. Roma had more answers all game long on both offense and defense, shaking off a slow start to take consistent leads from the middle of the second quarter onward. When Unicaja closed within 58-56 early in the final quarter, Erazem Lorbek and Hawkins steadied the hosts before Jaaber and Ukic combined for steals to reestablish a solid lead.

Haislip went baseline and nailed free throws to start the scoreboard rolling at 0-4 for Unicaja. Roma couldn't find the basket until Ukic drove for a layup. Gregor Fucka shook off early missses by hitting a triple and a two-pointer for Roma's first lead, 7-6. Santiago gave the advantage back to Unicaja before Ukic launched and hit from downtwon to make it 10-8. Bojan Popovic tied at the free throw line before Stefansson put Roma back up, but the rest of the quarter belonged to the guests. Boniface N'Dong tied again inside, Haislip hit a go-ahead basket and then Welsch struck from downtown as Unicaja bolted ahead by 12-17 after 10 minutes.

Marcus Haislip - UnicajaStefansson and Gabini started Roma's comeback by sharing all the points in a 7-0 run that vaulted the hosts back into the lead, 19-17, to start the second quarter. Davor Kus and Welsch forged a couple ties for Unicaja before German Gabriel's triple put the visitors in front again, but Gabini answered with the same shot at 24-24. The first basket by Hawkins put Roma back in front as he and Ibrahim Jaaber combined on 7 consecutive points to make it 31-24. Haislip responded with 5 points of his own, but Hawkins stuck another shot between them. Popovic at the line and Gabriel with a three-point play helped Unicaja get as close as 35-34, but a free throw by Stefansson preceded a triple by Simone Bagnoli to push Roma to a 39-34 halftime lead.

Haislip opened the second half as he had the first, but Hawkins soon buried a triple and Ukic drove past Santiago to stay up by 44-36. Unicaja got Carlos Jimenez and Welsch free underneath for baskets before Rodrigo De la Fuente buried a second-chance triple and Lorbek a foul-line jumper, his first basket, for a 49-40 Roma lead. Welsch got 3 points back in one shot for Unicaja, but Lorgek punished the visitors' zone from up top with a triple to make it 52-44. After a Unicaja timeout, Kus hit a triple off a broken play, but Roma didn't let up. Jaaber and Ukic scored off steals, and when Ukic added a jumper just inside the arc, the hosts had their first double-digit lead, 58-48. Kus and Melvin Sanders got 3 points back a the foul line before Hailsip dunked a loose ball to end the quarter by getting Unicaja within 58-53.

Roko-Leni Ukic - Lottomatica RomaWelsch got to the line and Haislip scored inside to keep Unicja's run going to 8-0 early in the fourth quarter. At 58-56, Lorbek steadied Roma with free throws and then drew an offensive foul, the fourth on Haislip, sending him to Unicaja's bench. Hawkins drove through Unicaja's zone to beat the shot-clock buzzer and Gabini followed with a foul-line jumper to boost the Roma lead to 64-56 with 5 minutes left. After a Unicaja timeout, Stefansson blasted a corner triple for the biggest lead of the night, 67-56. Popovic and Ukic traded free throws with under 3 minutes left. Unicaja needed quick points and Kus got a couple driving at 69-60, but Lorbek dunked an offensive rebound. Roma had only to take care of the point margin over the last couple of minutes, because the outcome was no longer in doubt.

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"Roma played very aggressive defense and we lacked something in defense today. We had one of our centers, Daniel Santiago, in foul trouble and the other one, Boniface NDong who sustained an injury. We really needed both of them tonight, we gave away too many rebounds and allowed Roma some easy points. Now we must look forward. We will recover some of our players in two weeks' time. After two defeats, we must go out to win our next game. I am not worried, I know it's going to be difficult against CSKA but we will try. In this group you need three wins to progress and there are four games left."

Players

UKIC, ROKO
Lottomatica Roma
"We really wanted to win this game for our coach who couldn't be with us today because of the flu. I think we played great defense today, only Marcus Haislip gave us problems. I think the key for us this year has been teamwork. Everyone gives a little. This is a very important win for us. Eight points is a nice margin. It's a pity about our result in Moscow because we could have been with two wins now, but I believe we are in a good position. Now we have to go to Barcelona and play well as we did in the group stages."
WELSCH, JIRI
Unicaja
"We are disappointed. We came here confident about our chances but we knew we faced a difficult team that almost last week won in Moscow. The difference tonight was that when it really mattered, we allowed Roma to score, to get rebounds and to get free throws. In the crucial stages of the game, Roma was better. We still have four games left to play and anything can happen."
