THE TAKE

DKV Joventut hosts Partizan Belgrade at the Palau Olimpic in Badalona, Spain, on Wednesday in a battle for Group E survival, as the loser will be eliminated. Both teams are in a race with Olympiacos Piraeus for the second spot from the group in the Quarterfinal Playoffs after defending champion CSKA (4-0) clinched last week. Both will also know already the result of CSKA vs. Olympiacos (2-2) earlier on Wednesday evening, which will greatly affect the group. If Olympiacos wins, Partizan (1-3) will be eliminated. Partizan lost twice to the Reds and therefore could not finish better than tied at 3-3 with them, but could still with a victory also knock out Joventut (1-3). If Olympiacos and Joventut win, they will play for the last Quarterfinal Playoffs berth the last week of the Top 16. It will be the same scenario if CSKA and Joventut both win. If CSKA and Partizan win, all three non-qualified teams remain alive into the last game. The meeting is the fourth between these two sides this season. Joventut swept the regular-season series, but Partizan won their first Top 16 battle 85-70 two weeks ago in Serbia. Partizan's big men, Predrag Drobnjak and Kosta Perovic, both shined that night with double-doubles as the hosts won the battle of the boards 33-21. Perovic (11.3 ppg., 6.3 rpg., 1.2 bpg.) was a dominant force in his team's loss at Olympiacos last week, totaling 19 points, 11 boards and 12 fouls drawn - tied for the fourth most in that category in Euroleague history. Joventut also arrives in good form as Rudy Fernandez and Co. downed Group D leader Tau Ceramica in Spanish-League action over the weekend. Fernandez (16.2 ppg., 45.1% 3FG) is Joventut's top weapon, teaming with point guards Elmer Bennett (7.8 ppg., 2.9 apg.) and Ricky Rubio (2.9 apg., 3.3 apg.) to give coach Aito Garcia Reneses a backcourt to be reckoned with. Partizan counters with Vonteego Cummings (13.6 ppg., 3.2 apg.), Dusan Kecman and swingman Uros Tripkovic (9.1 ppg.). But the determining battle could be in the paint, where the likes of centers Andy Betts and Robert Archibald (9 ppg.) and power forward Charles Gaines (9.9 ppg., 6.2 rpg.) will face off with Partizan's Drobnjak (16 ppg., 6.8 rpg.), Perovic and Nikola Pekovic. If the hosts' battery of big men find the answer to Partizan interior trio, Joventut will have a big advantage. But if Perovic continues on his recent tear, Partizan will be tough to beat. Either way, this battle could be scored as just another great round between these teams, which met each other for the 1992 Euroleague title and could be headed there again in the future with a cast of spectacular young players ready to conquer all.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"Tomorrow's game will be difficult because even though we had a win, maybe surprising, we are not in our best moment. Partizan is a tough rival but we will do everything we can to beat them. The game we won this weekend in the Spanish League will give us confidence for the upcoming games. Lubos Barton is out, Drew Sullivan didn't practice today either and Dima Flis practiced, but he was out in our last game so he has to re-gain his rhythm. I hope he's better for the game."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"We know each other very well. It is sure that Joventut will have additional motivation for revenge because we beat them in our first Top 16 game in Belgrade. But I think we are able to match up. Last week in Pireaus against Olympiacos we showed our ability to play with force on the road. Joventut players play fast, think fast and they are improving fast. All teams in Top 16 phase are of a high level. I am sure that this level is close to the NBA level."

BENNETT, ELMER
DKV Joventut
"We have our options, but it always comes down to winning tomorrow's game at home. With Partizan this season we have won twice and lost once. They have a young and talented team but we will have our opportunity, so we will have to show it on court. The key will be aggressive defense and trying to take advantage of it, but at the same time we have to score well. When we beat them here at home we pulled away soon and they were not very well in that game. The most important thing is to be concentrated on teh game and on Partizan."
KECMAN, DUSAN
Partizan
"We still have opportunities to reach the Euroleague quaterfinals if we beat Joventut. It is possible to do because we played great on the road against Maccabi, Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, and we beat Joventut in Belgrade several weeks ago. The fact is that Joventut has a huge advantage at its home court. This is a team that plays aggressive defense with dangerous fastbreaks. The best part of their team is the guard line with Bennett, Fernandez, Rubio, Huertas and others. They are a little bit weaker under the boards, and I see our chances if our big men manage to dominate in the paint."
Uros Tripkovic - Partizan Partizan stayed alive in the fight to reach the Quarterfinal Playoffs from Group E by downing DKV Joventut 80-89 on Wednesday in Badalona, Spain. Partizan improved to 2-3 now ties with Olympiacos for the second place in this group, while Joventut dropped to 1-4 but still has an outside chances to advance. Partizan has more than one way to advance; first, if it beats CSKA and Joventut defeats Olympiacos in Greece; and second, if it loses but Joventut wins by fewer than 34 points. Meanwhile, for Joventut to finish second, it needs to win by at least 34 points in Greece and see CSKA beat Partizan. Partizan's hero against Joventut was Uros Tripkovic, who scored a Euroleague career-high 26 points by making 3 of 3 two-point shots and 6 of 8 triples. Predrag Drobnjak added 17 points while Dusan Kecman had 14 for Partizan. Rudy Fernandez had 16 points for Joventut, Elmer Bennett added 15, Robert Archibald 14 and Charles Gaines 13. Joventut had led 64-51 late in the third quarter before three-pointers by Drobnjak, Tripkovic and Kecman brought Partizan back to life. A later 0-11 run that Tripkovic and Drobnjak capped with 2 more triples widened Partizan's run to 6-32 and broke the game open, 70-83, midway through the final period

Drobnjak's baseline bank shot got Partizan on the board first, while a runner by Marcelinho Huertas did the same for Joventut. The hosts soon sent Fernandez on a breakaway dunk to lead 6-2, but Luka Bogdanovic scored 4 points in a 0-7 response by Partizan, including a reverse alley-oop. Bennett came in and hit his first shot from the arc to tie 9-9 then split baskets with Andrew Betts as Joventut rolled in front 13-9. Partizan hit back with a layup by Nikola Pekovic and a triple by Tripkovic. With a pair of open-court steals, Gaines mounted his own six-point run for Joventut before Kecman and Bennett traded triples. Pekovic and Drobnjak got to the line to hit 4 of 4 free throws as Joventut hung onto a 22-21 difference after 10 minutes.

Charles Gaines - DKV JoventutTripkovic's basket-plus-free throw sparked a 0-7 Partizan run to start the second quarter as Kecman joined in with back-to-back layups to give the guests a 22-28 lead. Fernandez hit free throws and fed Archibald for a layup to get his team within 27-28. Tripkovic scored off a midcourt steal but Gaines followed free throws with an outstanding reverse dunk to put Joventut back ahead, 31-30. Tripkovic silenced the crowd with a three-pointer but free throws by Archibald and a layup by Huertas provided another lead change at 35-33. Tripkovic and Archibald traded baskets while Paco Vazquez sank a triple to give Joventut a 40-35 edge. Kecman stepped up with a layup but Bennett's acrobatic layup kept Joventut up comfortably and his running triple let the hosts sail to halftime ahead by 50-43

Kecman scored coming off the baseline to get Partizan going after the break but Archibald answered with a power layup. Partizan had improved its defense while Drobnjak buried a triple from the top to make it 52-48. Joventut called a timeout, after which Vazquez nailed a jumper. Archibald added free throws, while Fernandez scored a triple off a steal and a driving layup, capping a 9-0 run that shot Joventut in front by 61-48 and forced a Partizan timeout. Pekovic tried to change things with a layup-plus-free throw for the guests, but Fernandez answered from downtown to keep Joventut ahead, 64-51. Tripkovic started the comeback single-handedly, with consecutive bombs from downtown before Drobnjak joined the three-point shootout and got Partizan within 64-60. Perovic followed free throws with a five-meter jumper while Kecman beat the buzzer with a running triple that capped a 2-16 run and gave Partizan a 66-67 edge after 30 minutes.

Predrag Drobnjak - PartizanThe game turned into a physical battle early in the fourth quarter, as Archibald muscled up a tipin to put Joventut ahead again, 68-67. Partizan went scoreless for more than 2 minutes until Perovic surfaced with a put-back dunk. Cummings then buried a corner three-pointer as Partizan's defense grew intense. Betts gave Joventut some fresh air with a second-chance layup but Tripkovic answered from downtown at 70-75 midway through the quarter. Drobnjak broke out for a transition dunk before Tripkovic raised and buried his sixth triple as a shocked Joventut needed a timeout at 70-80. Drobnjak then capped a game-breaking 0-11 run with a corner three-pointer that proved time was running out for the hosts. Bennett made free throws and Rubio scored in penetration, while Gaines and Perovic traded dunks. But by trading points, Joventut failed to rally, and when Tripkovic sealed his outstanding game with a free throw, Partizan was fully in the playoffs race.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"I am satisfied because we played with a good fighting spirit until the end. Partizan did really well in the first quarter and even when we had a nice lead, they managed to rally. We know that the Euroleague is a tough competition, so we have to take games as they come. With a game left to play, I think that our Euroleague appearance was positive. We are happy about it. We really deserved to advance to the Top 16. We have to be patient, thinking that the Euroleague goes on, but even if we won't get the result we need in Athens, we will leave a good impression."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"We know that Joventut is always a strong team at home, one that plays really well, and this is why we trailed throughout the first half. I don't think about what will happen in Athens next week. We all have to play our games and I know Joventut is an honest team with players and a coach who always go on the court to win. I love their playing style and I am impressed by players like Ricky Rubio or Rudy Fernandez, who I knew two years ago. I think this is a step forward for Serbian basketball, which has been going through hard times lately."

Players

BENNETT, ELMER
DKV Joventut
"We played really well in the first half but we lost control in the fourth quarter. They got an important lead that we could not erase in the end. Partizan had very good shot selection in an outstanding second half. They managed to get a nice lead and that was enough for them to get the win. We have to keep on working in order to improve."
DROBNJAK, PREDRAG
Partizan
"In a sport like basketball, you have to accept wins and losses, and as the scoreboard read at the end of the game, we were the best team on court tonight. We prepared the game really well and played with a lot of patience. We knew it would not be an easy game and being honest, winning in such a court against such a team leaves a nice taste. Now we have to beat CSKA next week."
