THE TAKE

Two teams who have reversed roles a bit during the first half of the season in Group B will square off on Wednesday in Malaga, Spain when Unicaja hosts Partizan Belgrade. Unicaja (2-4) was the top team in the league during the regular season last year, going 12-2, but lost its first three games this season - two in overtime and the other at the buzzer- and now needs a home win desperately on Thursday. Partizan (3-3), a last-placed finisher in its regular season group a year ago, has already surpassed its win total from 2005-06 and can now consolidate a great start with a victory in Malaga. Unicaja won the only two games between the teams last season and both were close encounters. In the game in Malaga, Partizan forced overtime before Unicaja escaped with an 83-79 victory. Marcus Brown led Unicaja with 20, while Nikola Pekovic scored a career-high 15 and grabbed 9 boards for Partizan. Brown, the all-time Euroleague scoring leader, missed the first three games of this season and has yet to hit his stride since returning - going scoreless last week in 18 minutes at Roma for the first time in his 115-game Euroleague career. Center Daniel Santiago has been on form recently, averaging 14.3 points on 72.7% shooting and 6.7 rebounds in his last three games, of which Unicaja has won two. Top scorer Berni Rodriguez (14.3 ppg.) matched his career-high for the second time this season with 20 last week. Jiri Welsch (13 ppg.) is Unicaja's other top option on offense. Partizan has been led this season by big men Predrag Drobnjak (7.5 rpg.), who ranks fourth among Euroleague scorers with 17.5 points per game, and Kosta Perovic (12.5 ppg., 7.5 rpg.), who is second with 1.8 blocks. Point guard Vonteego Cummings (12.3 ppg.) ranks tenth with 3.7 assists per game. In last week's loss to Panathinaikos, Uros Tripkovic showed signs of breaking out of a season-long slump with 14 points. Fans can expect the ball to change directions often between the two league-leanding teams in turnovers - Partizan with 19.3 per game and Unicaja with 17.2. The Spanish champions should have practiced their free-throw shooting, too, because Unicaja draws the second-most fouls per game (25.8) and Partizan commits the second-most (26.8). This result will carry importance beyond its effect on the standings, too, as both teams look to reach the halfway point of the regular season with a morale-boosting victory.

Quotes Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"The quality of our opponent in terms of talent and also in terms of the experience of some of its players, demonstrated in the way they are playing and the results they have so far, indicates clearly what a difficult game this will be. I am sure that our fans will understand our team's need to recieve more support and help when we are not playing well, which is the case now. I am also sure that the team itself knows how to show its capacity to perform with concentration and intensity not only when the wind is blowing favorably for us, but when it's blowing a little against us, as it seems to be right now."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Unicaja has no choice but to do everything to win the game. The Spanish champion is on its way to compensating the departure of Garbajosa, who is well replaced by Jimenez. Brown is recovered and Daniel Santiago is close to his best shape. It is going to be very hard game to us. We played a couple of very good games in the Euroleague so far, and that is the reason all teams will play very patiently against us. Anyway, we have the obligation to play road games as well as we do our home games. If there should be any chance to beat Unicaja, we are ready to do our job."

Players

CABEZAS, CARLOS
Unicaja
"In the Euroleague, winning home games is fundamental, and in our situation right now, perhaps even more so, which makes this game against Partizan very important for us. We want to find our playing style and achieve good results beginning with the first game that awaits us, which is this one against the champions of the Serbia and Montenegro League. With the help of our public, I am sure that we'll make a step forward and we'll fight until the finish to pull out a much-desired victory."
KECMAN, DUSAN
Partizan
"We are looking for the opportunity to surprise a great team in a road game. Unicaja disappointed its supporters so far this season, but Unicaja made a break in Rome against Lottomatica. Brown is back to his best shape and the team from Malaga is one of the favorites to reach the Top 16 even though Unicaja is in the sixth position in our group at the moment. But we are not travelling with a white flag. That does not mean that we are counting a win over the Spanish champion before the game starts, either. We all know how much we are worth. I think one ball will decide the game."
Kostas Vasiliadis - Unicaja Unicaja got back to the race for a Top 16 slot from Group B by beating Partizan Belgrade 66-58 at home in Malaga, Spain on Wednesday night. Both teams are now tied for the decisive fifth place at 3-4, but Cibona, DKV Joventut and Lottomatica Roma could have the same record depending on their Thursday results. Berni Rodriguez led the winners with 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Carlos Cabezas, Carlos Jimenez and Kostas Vasileadis each added 12 points for Unicaja. Vonteego Cummings led Partizan with 16 points, Nikola Pekovic added 10 while Kosta Perovic grabbed 10 rebounds for the guests. Jiri Welsch and Rodriguez fueled a 15-5 opening run that saw Unicaja take a 22-16 lead after one quarter. Another 10-0 led by Pepe Sanchez's 5 points boosted Unicaja's lead to 34-20, but Partizan cut the deficit to 49-39 at halftime and down to 59-55 midway through the fourth quarter. However, Vasileadis and Cabezas scored from downtown during a 7-0 Unicaja run, which allowed the home fans to celebrate the win long before the final buzzer.

Rodriguez needed just 12 seconds to draw a foul and make a free throw in an aggresive start that set the tone for what was to come. Partizan tried to look for Predrag Drobnjak in the early going, but it was Daniel Santiago who shined on the other end for Unicaja with a put-back dunk. Cummings answered with a layup for an early 3-3 tie. Welsch followed an alley-oop layup with a fast break dunk and Jimenez added a coast-to-coast basket, forzing a Partizan timeout at 9-3. Unicaja stayed focused on defense, while Rodriguez buried a triple that capped a 9-0 run. Cummings came to the rescue with a fallaway jumper, as Partizan tried to get things going on the other end with a zone defense. Cabezas punished the zone with a triple from the corner to give Unicaja its first double-digit margin, 15-5. Dusan Kecman stepped up with back-to-back layups, but Santiago matched it with a short jumper and free throws. Pekovic came off the bench and shined with a dunk and a put-back layup, before a mid-range jumper by Petar Bozic brought Partizan within 22-16 after 10 minutes.

Vonteego Cummings - PartizanCummings scored off a steal and Perovic added a second-chance basket to get Partizan within 24-20. Unicaja did not panic, however, as Erazem Lorbek buried a three-pointer and Sanchez nailed a jumper to keep the hosts out of trouble. Partizan had trouble scoring, while Vasileadis fired in a triple that caused the guests call timeout at 32-20. Sanchez remained hot and hit an off-balance jumper, which capped a 10-0 Unicaja run to make it a 14-point game. Petar Bozic tried to change things with a three-pointer and then Vasileadis and Pekovic traded free throws, but Vasileiadis buried another triple. Drobnjak erased it with a layup-plus-foul. Another put-back basket by Pekovic brought Partizan within 39-29 at halftime.

Rodriguez fired in a three-pointer to start the second half in style. Drobnjak scored inside and Kecman added a coast-to-coast for a 0-6 Partizan run, which Pekovic capped with free throws. Cabezas rescued his team with foul shots after a timeout, but Uros Tripkovic answered from downtown to get Partizan even closer, 44-38. Jimenez followed a three-pointer with a fast break layup to extend the hosts' lead to 49-38. Kecman scored again, but Partizan had entered the foul bonus. Rodriguez and Jimenez made free throws and even after Cummings scored with a driving layup, Rodriguez copied him in the other end for a 55-42 Unicaja margin. Milenko Tepic and Cummings fueled a 0-5 Partizan run. Cabezas hit a jumper, but Tepic buried a three-pointer off the dribble to get Partizan within 57-51. Vasileadis drove baseline for a dunk to give Unicaja a 59-51 lead after three quarters.

Tripkovic fouled out early in the final period and Unicaja improved its defense when it mattered most. Points came the hard way, as both teams exchanged missed shots and turnovers, while Florent Pietrus had a huge block on Pekovic. Cummings hit one from downtown to get the guests within 59-55, but Vasileadis answered from downtown to give Unicaja some fresh air. Partizan kept trying to attack the basket without much success, while Jimenez made a free throw for a 63-55 Unicaja lead with over 4 minutes to go. Cabezas buried a three-pointer that capped a 7-0 run, which sealed the outcome, 66-55. Cummings stepped up with a three-point play but it was too little, too late for Partizan. Unicaja was already using long possessions and ran out the clock on an important win.

Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"As we expected, it was a a difficult game against a very talented opponent which had beaten Maccabi and Cibona before, as well as being close to defeat Panathinaikos, too. I am sure that we would not have won the game in we did not play exceptional defense throughout the entire game. We come off two slow games in the Spanish League, in which we had decreased out attitude and effort, but we got a big win today due to our outstanding defense. Our only problem was defensive rebounds but we fixed it a bit in the second half. Carlos Jimenez had a great game fighting against Predrag Drobnjak and Kosta Perovic. We managed to stop them with the help of Florent Pietrus, too. We will get to know about Marcus Brown's status tomorrow."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"We tried to change the game rhythm with our defensive switches, but we didn't managed to do it because Unicaja did really well. We did not have a good game when it came to outside shooting. Nikola Pekovic was our only dangerous player around the basket in this game. Both teams looked for points differential once the outcome was clear, as it can be important for future tie-break situations. We have a lot of young players, born in 1985, 1986 and 1987 and who play a lot of minutes. The lack of experience is important when you play games at this level."
