THE TAKE

It’s do-or-die time for Maroussi BC as it aims to reach the Top 16 in its first Euroleague campaign when it hosts Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv on Thursday. Maroussi controls its own fate and will advance to the next stage with a victory or if Lottomatica Roma, which like Maroussi enters the game with a 3-6 record, loses to Union Olimpija. However if Maccabi beats Maroussi and Roma wins, Lottomatica will advance to the Top 16 from fourth Group C and Maroussi’s season will be over. Head coach Georgios Bartzokas’s men shan’t be expecting Maccabi to roll over as the Israeli champs also have something to gain. Maccabi, which is 6-3, can overtake CSKA Moscow for second place and a more favorable position in the Top 16 Draw if it wins and CSKA falls to Caja Laboral. Maccabi got big games from Andrew Wisniewski and Maciej Lampe in beating Maroussi at home 75-67 in Week 5. Lampe is no longer with the club though, so the likes of D’Or Fischer and Yaniv Green will be called upon to control the paint against Dimitrios Mavroeidis and Jared Homan. This could be an important matchup since Maccabi leads the league in rebounds (36.1 rpg.) and Maroussi is third worst (29.9 rpg.). Defensive ace Stephane Lasme and star shooter David Bluthenthal share time at power forward, where they will face Kostas Kaimakoglou and Stevan Nadjfeji. Wisniewski teams with Doron Perkins at point guard for Pini Gershon’s side. The playmaking duo will tangle with Billy Keys and Marios Batis. On the wings, Jamon Lucas, Michalis Pelekanos and Igor Milosevic will look to shut down Week 9 co-MVP Chuck Eidson, Alan Anderson and Guy Pnini. This game promises to be an intense battle with both teams desperate for the win. Though Maccabi benefits from experience, Maroussi has the home-court factor on its side. The two crucial matchups worth watching are Pelekanos against the red-hot Eidson and Keys on Wisniewski, after the latter dominated in Tel Aviv. Ultimately this game could be decided by which team wants it more and that will be a great thing for fans to watch over 40 minutes.

Quotes Head Coaches

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
"This is a historic moment for Maroussi. At the beginning of the season, nobody expected the team to fight for a Top 16 spot. Now we have a chance to beat Maccabi and make it, so it is a big deal. No matter the result, I believe that we have been successful on this level, but we will do our best to go all the way and advance to the next round. Maccabi is a basketball legend, with big tradition, great experience and quality, but we have already proved that we can play against everybody. The key points in this game are to control the rhythm and not allow them either to run or to take advantage of the speed and the athletic skills they have."
GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"This game is very important also to Maroussi, and it might put some pressure on them and raise some nervousness on their side. I hope it will have some influence on their game. It's very easy to play as an underdog, but now when they must win, maybe it will work in our benefit, but it's going to be anything but easy, because Maroussi is a very tough team that doesn't allow its opponent to score easy baskets. They want to win too obviously, and it's their last chance, so I'm sure they will use every possible trick in the book on the court to make it happen, and we must be ready for that."

Players

HOMAN, JARED
Maroussi BC
“We face a big challenge, the biggest this season and there is a great opportunity to make history for the club and ourselves. We have a lot of respect for Maccabi, but we are not afraid of them, so we will try to give our best and make it to the Top 16. The most important thing in a decisive game like this is to be concentrated and play as usual. I hope that our fans will come to OAKA to support our efforts.”
PNINI, GUY
Maccabi Electra
"We want to finish the regular season with a win even if it's not going to change the final standings. We will be one hundred percent focused on the court in Greece, and after we take the win go check what's going on in Moscow. Almost every team that played against Maroussi had a tough time, and it's not a coincidence. Even if they aren't the most talented team in the Euroleague, they make you work hard and sweat before you take the win. That was the case in Tel Aviv so I'm sure in Greece it's not going to be any different. They have a very strong mentality, and almost never fall apart, so even we make a good run early in the game we must stay 100% focused and wait for the final buzzer before we start to celebrate."
Jamon Lucas and Billy Keys celebrates - Maroussi BCMaroussi BC advanced to the Top 16! Maroussi will play in the Top 16 for the first time in club history after downing Maccabi Electra 83-75 in a must-win game in Athens on Thursday. Stevan Nadjfeji drained a pair of triples and Jamon Lucas hit two jumpers during a 14-0 fourth-quarter charge that ended a close game and set the stage for Maroussi to win. Maroussi finished Group C with a 4-6 record, edging Lottomatica Roma for fourth place. Maccabi dropped to 6-4 and must settle for third place. Maccabi led for most of the first three quarters, but Maroussi always stayed close. Perkins opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, however that would be the club’s final highlight as Maroussi soon reeled off its game-winning run and celebrated a Top 16 berth. Kostas Kaimakoglou led six Maroussi scorers in double figures with 18 points. Jared Homan shined with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Michalis Pelekanos had 11 points and 9 boards as the hosts outrebounded Maccabi 40-33. Lucas finished with 12 points and 6 assists and Nadjfeji and Billy Keys added 10 points apiece. Doron Perkins led Maccabi with 18 points and 5 assists off the bench, Alan Anderson scored 13 and David Bluthenthal had 10 in defeat.

Andrew Wisniewski penetrated early and D’Or Ficher put Maccabi ahead with a tip-in. Anderson doubled Maccabi’s lead with a layup in transition. Pelekanos used the pick-and-roll to get to the basket for Maroussi’s first points three minutes into the game, but Anderson fed Fischer to keep Maccabi ahead. Homan and Anderson traded baskets. Kaimakoglou made free throws on back-to-back possession to tie the score before scoring over Anderson to give the hosts their first lead, 10-8. Bluthenthal countered with a three-pointer. Homan blocked Anderson underneath, but Fischer grabbed the rebound and slammed it home. Homan had trouble scoring in the paint and Chuck Eidson added to the Tel Aviv lead. Homan drilled a foul-line jumper. Fischer fed Bluthenthal for a score underneath and Eidson threw in a one-handed floater that gave Maccabi a 12-19 lead after 10 minutes.

Maroussi managed to slow the pace down again and chip into Maccabi’s lead through free throws by Homan and a Kaimakoglou basket. Wisniewski drove to get Maccabi’s first points of the quarter. Billy Keys hit a pull-up jumper, but Wisniewski matched him with a layup. Dimitrios Mavroeidis muscled his way to a score and Stephane Lasme got on the board with a free throw at the other end. Keys drilled a triple to bring the hosts within 23-24 midway through the quarter. Perkins’s steal and slam kept Maccabi on top. Lasme took a pass from Anderson and slammed it and then got one from Perkins for an impressive two-handed jam. After three scoreless minutes, Maroussi heated up as and Pat Calathes nailed back-to-back three-pointers from opposite corners to bring their team within 1. Anderson answered from the line before Lucas hit a jumper. Bluthenthal handed off to Perkins for a baseline jumper that gave the visitors a 31-34 edge at the break.

Doron Perkins - Maccabi ElectraHoman made it a 1-point game with free throws to start the second half and tied the game the same way a minute later. Anderson took the ball in the post and spun for a slam, but Kaimakoglou used a nifty move to keep it knotted. Bluthenthal drilled a three-pointer, but Pelekanos drove for a score and then dished to Homan as Maroussi took a 40-39 lead. The lead switched hands as Perkins scored a layup and Kaimakoglou nit a three. Wisniewski penetrated to tie the game at 43-43. Lucas spotted a wide-open Homan for an easy score and Kaimakoglou extended the lead to 4 from the line. Anderson willed his way to the basket for Maccabi, but Yaniv Green sent Pelekanos to the line and he kept Maroussi in control. Guy Pnini drew a foul shooting a three and buried 2 free throws before Perkins grabbed the rebound on the missed third free throw and fed Bluthenthal to tie the score. Maroussi went back on top on a Lucas free throw, but Anderson found a cutting Green for a basket-plus-foul and a Maccabi lead. Homan’s tip-in gave Maroussi the lead before Perkins tied the score at 53-53 at the end of the third quarter.

Perkins opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer only to see Marios Batis score a quick layup. Perkins fed Eidson for a score, but Mavroeidis kept Maroussi close. Pelekanos put the hosts back on op with a three-pointer and Nadjfeji made it 63-58 with another three. Lucas added a jumper and Nadjefeji hit a three as Maroussi pulled away. Lucas made another jumper to cap a 14-0 run that made it 69-58. Perkins ended a five-and-a-half-minute-long scoring drought for Maccabi from the line and soon added a layup, but Mavroeidis calmed the local fans with a free throw. Perkins added 2 more free throws and Anderson nailed a three to make it 72-66. Nadjefeji swished 2 free throws and Perkins only 1 as Maroussi drew closer to the next stage. Even when news reached the arena that CSKA won and Maccabi could not advance to second place in the group, the visitors continued to fight. Derrick Sharp nailed a pair of threes in the final minute, but it was too little, too late as Maroussi sealed the win and the club’s greatest European feat to date.

Head Coaches

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
"Everybody in Maroussi deserves congratulations for the big effort that has started last summer. Nobody really believed we could make it, but here we are in the Euroleague Top 16, which is incredible for the club. We were competitive in all ten game of the regular season, except the home game against Caja Laboral, while in the Top16 we have to enjoy our participation. Tonight against Maccabi, we started very nervously, but at halftime we calmed down and returned to the get the win and the ticket to the Top 16."
GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"Maroussi deserves congratulations for its success. Coach Bartzokas has done very, very, very, very good job and I mean it. It seemed that his players wanted the win more than mine. They made the right decisions in the crucial moments and this is very important to win a game. We played good defense in the first period, but in the last one Maroussi had many offensive rebounds and had much better percentage from the free throw line. This Euroleague is very tough, since Lottomatica Roma didnt make it, while Efes Pilsen waited until the last game. Five or six teams invested big money with no limit and they will go to the playoffs. Montepaschi Siena, Efes Pilsen and maybe we will fight for the other spots."

Players

KAIMAKOGLOU, KOSTAS
Maroussi BC
"We finally made it to the Top 16, exceeding the highest expectations. I dedicate this win over Maccabi Tel Aviv to my teammates, the coaching staff and to our fans, who supported us tonight. Now, the level is getting much higher. We will face big-time teams and our goal is to give our best every night and enjoy the participation in the Top 16."
ANDERSON, ALAN
Maccabi Electra
"We shouldn't have given up when Maroussi took their seven- or eight-point lead with four minutes to go. Definitely, we shouldn't have done this and rather kept fighting until the end. Before the game, we didn't have pressure on ourselves, that's why we didn't put pressure on us to play harder. Anyway, I am not going to take anything from Maroussi. They wanted the win, they got it and now we will see what happens in the Top 16 Draw next Monday."
