THE TAKE

A critical battle in the fight to make it to the Top 16 from Group D is scheduled for Wednesday night when Armani Jeans Milano hosts German League champion EWE Baskets Oldenburg. Both teams are tie for fifth place at 1-5, just one win behind Asseco Prokom, fourth at 2-4. So the winner of this game will rejoin the Top 16 race while the loser will need a major comeback to keep its chances alive. EWE Baskets improved with Bryan Bailey at point guard, allowing Je'Kel Foster to see more minutes at the '2' spot - as Jason Gardner is still sidelined and not expected to play in Milano this week. Bailey is set for a big point guard battle against Morris Finley, in one of the most important matchups in this game. Massimo Bulleri offers creativity and experience off the bench. Alex Acker missed a Italian League game this weekend, so Marco Mordente and Jonas Maciulis will see most minutes at the wings. Stefano Mancinelli will help Milano at both forwards, with sharp shooter Jeff Viggiano providing intensity and unlimited range off the bench. Mordente is ready for a big fight against Foster, while Maciulis must use his explosiveness, power and defensive skills against Rickey Paulding, Oldenburg's most important player. Paulding offers silent leadership, determination and team-oriented mentality at any time. Josh Carter will help Oldenburg at both wings with his athleticism and shot. There is important good news for Milano, as Marius Petravicius has recovered and is ready to face Oldenburg. Petravicius is set to lead the hosts' frontcourt along with rebounding machine Mason Rocca. Joey Beard offers size and experience at center while Mike Hall is set to come off the bench to open the court with his three-point shots and change the game with his defense and intensity. Petravicius hopes to use his post skills and mid-range jumper against defensive force Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje. Hall is ready for an interesting matchup against Milan Majstorovic. Meanwhile, Rocca has the tough mission to guard Jasmin Perkovic. Rocca is heavier and more experienced, so Perkovic must try to face him one-on-one and make the most of his driving skills. Skecic has to open the court with his long-distance shots against Beard and Petravicius. Oldenburg must get Paulding and Foster involved and try to play up-tempo to make the most out of its better physical skills. Milano must find Petravicius down low and expect Finley to set the right game rhythm. Above all, expect an intense battle in which the loser will lose many chances to stay alive in the competition.

Quotes Head Coaches

BUCCHI, PIERO
Armani Jeans Milano
"It’s a very important game for us. We won in Oldenburg last October and now we have to repeat that kind of game, especially what we did in the last quarter. A win against the German team would very important for us looking to get a pass for the next round of Euroleague. We know how important this game is and we have to play it with the right mentality starting from the beginning, knowing Oldenburg is a good team. It’ll be a tough game, but we are ready to play it."
KRUNIC, PREDRAG
EWE Baskets
"It will be a very tough game at Milano. The team has excellence balance between inside and outside. Morris Finley is the motor of the team, we have to be aware of that. In the first game against Milano, he showed a lot of his quality. The players are very experienced and are always able to use that. As Milano’s opponent, you have to reduce turnovers because they take advantage of any mistake you produce. We have to play concentrated and physically. On both ends of the court we must play clever."

Players

BULLERI, MASSIMO
Armani Jeans Milano
"We know very well the importance of the game of Wednesday. After losing in Madrid and Athens in the last two weeks, now we have to get two wins in the next two games at home, trying to get a pass for the Top 16. Oldenburg is a good team, but we won in Germany and we want to repeat it in front of our fans. It’d be so important for us because it’d means to have a 2-0 against them and two points more in the standings. We are ready."
MAJSTOROVIC, MILAN
EWE Baskets
"This is going to be a tough challenge for our team. In the first game we had the chance to win. If we play our best basketball we might be able to keep the score close again. To grab the win at Milano we have to be totally focused on our gameplan and find our offensive rhythm early in the game. It´s not easy to play at Milano but for us it should make no difference whether we play at home or away. We need to bring a lot of energy on the court."
Stefano Mancinelli - AJ MilanoArmani Jeans Milano ended a four-game losing streak and beat EWE Baskets Oldenburg for the second time this season on Wednesday in the Italian fashion capital. Milano surged ahead with runs of 7, 10 and 14 unanswered points in the first, second and third quarters, respectively, and continued to pad its lead until taking the very end for a 79-51 victory. Milano improved to 2-5 and will host Asseco Prokom next week in a showdown that could decide fourth place and the last ticket to the Top 16 from Group D. Oldenburg lost its sixth straight in falling to 1-6 as its chances to reach the next stage begin to disappear. EWE Baskets hosts Khimki in a must-win showdown next week. Marius Petravicius could not be corralled in the paint and finished with 16 points to lead Milano, while Stefano Mancinelli did much of his damage early en route to 15. Mike Hall added 13 points on 3-for-5 three-point shooting. Overall Milano went 8 for 15 from downtown (53.3%). Je'Kel Foster led Oldenburg with 10 points. Jason Gardner, the 2009 German League MVP who missed the start of this season with back trouble, made his first Euroleague appearance in over six seasons and scored 9 points.

Oldenburg won the opening tip and Foster put the visitors on the scoreboard first. Marco Mordente hit Milano's first basket. Bryan Bailey sank a triple to put Oldenburg ahead, but the teams continued to trade shots and soon a Mancinelli triple made it 10-7. Mordente drilled another three as Armani Jeans doubled Oldenburg, 14-7. Foster fired back from downtown only to see Mancinelli catch fire with a basket and a three for a 9-point Milano advantage. Back-to-back triples from Bailey and Milan Majstorovic brought the German champs within 3. Petravicius took charge at the end of the quarter, drawing a foul, sinking 2 free throws and then scoring in the paint for a 23-16 lead after 10 minutes.

Petravicius picked up where he left off by scoring the first basket of the second quarter. Marko Scekic made a free throw for the visitors, but a triple by Massimo Bulleri took Armani Jeans to its first double-digit lead. The hosts threatened to put the game away early as Petravicus added another bucket and Hall scored 2 from the line. Hall then stepped outside and delivered a triple to cap a 10-0 charge for a 35-17 lead. Just when it seemed over, Oldenburg fought back. Paulding sank a pair of free throws and Majstorovic scored a basket ad from the line. Gardner’s first basket of the season narrowed the gap to 11. Mancinelli made a pair of free throws to keep Milano comfortably ahead. Mason Rocca got the lead up to 14 before Majstorovic sank 2 free throws to make it 41-29 at halftime.

Bryan Bailey - EWE BasketsThe second half started slow with neither team making a basket for over two minutes until Rickey Paulding made a layup and drew a foul. Mordente made 2 free throws, which Jasmin Perkovic matched with a basket. Rocca scored inside for Milano's first basket of the half nearly five minutes into the third quarter. The hosts picked up their effort on defense as a Maciulis steal led to a Mancinelli slam. Finely scored from the line and later delivered a cross-court assist to an open Hall for a triple from the elbow that took the Milano lead over the 20-point mark. Petravicius padded the lead from the line before Hall capped the third quarter with an exclamation point, slamming home a Petravicius miss to cap a 14-0 run for a 59-34 lead.

After going scoreless for the last five minutes of the third quarter, Oldenburg started the fourth quarter with some energy as Foster scored on the break and Josh Carter tallied his first basket. Maciulis found an open Hall for a three-pointer as the game took on an open feeling. The teams started to trade baskets with defense taking a backseat as Gardner got involved for Oldenburg and Petravicius found room to score inside. Foster became the first Oldenburg player to 10 points, but fouled out soon after. With the outcome clear, Milano gave Jeff Viggiano the chance to shine and he responded with a basket, a triple and a pair of sweet passes to Maciulis and Petravicius as the lead swelled until peaking on Petravicus's final basket at 28.

Head Coaches

BUCCHI, PIERO
Armani Jeans Milano
"We are satisfied with this success. The victory of Prokom over Real Madrid could be a problem for us, but we have to think about ourselves and work to be ready next week. We played good defense, we were focused for all the game, and I'm happy because we applied our game plan and we controlled the boards."

Players

VIGGIANO, JEFFREY
Armani Jeans Milano
"It was a very important victory tonight for us because we had no choice but to win over Oldenburg and continue to reach for a spot in the Top 16. We did a good job as a team, we didn't feel the pressure. We were able to play relaxed and get the result at the end. Now we have to be focused for the next important game, against Prokom."
PETRAVICIUS, MARIUS
Armani Jeans Milano
"I think this is a good victory for us, because of the standings. We felt that we were competitive in the last games against Panathinaikos and Real Madrid, but we missed something in the last minutes of the games. But I'm confident because I think we are improving as a team. From a personal point of view, I feel better after my injury. This is my second game in a row (after Napoli in the Italian League), and I had no problem on the floor."
