THE TAKE

The final game of the first legs of the ULEB Cup eighthfinals will take place on Wednesday in Germany when Alba Berlin hosts Real Madrid at the Max Schmeling Hall. Both teams feature well-balanced and rounded sides, but the spotlight in this encounter will be in the paint. Alba and Real were second and third with 37.3 and 36.9 rebounds per game during the regular season. Berlin's big men, Sharrod Ford (10.2 ppg., 6.9 rpg.), who led the ULEB Cup with 2.9 blocks per game this season, and Chris Owens (15.4 ppg., 6.8 rpg. 1 bpg.) make up one of the best rebounding duos in the competition. And having Ruben Boumtje Boumtje on the bench gives coach Henrik Rodl plenty of options. Madrid on the other hand has Felipe Reyes (7.1 ppg., 6.3 rpg.), who is second all-time on the ULEB Cup rebounding list and was second this season in offense rebounds (3.3 orpg.), and Axel Hervelle (11.8 ppg., 5.7 rpg.). During the break, the club beefed up with the additions of Marko Milic from Union Olimpija and Blagota Sekulic from PAOK. Despite the expected clashes inside, these teams also have some super guards at their disposal. Will Avery (16 ppg., 4.5 rpg., 3.6 apg.) teams with Julius Jenkins (12.6 ppg.) to form an explosive Alba tandem, while Real looks to Louis Bullock (11.7 ppg.), Charles Smith (13.1 ppg.), Kerem Tunceri (3.3 apg.) and Raul Lopez to lead the ship. The first game will carry a lot of weight in this series. Berlin will hope to use its home-court advantage to make up for its lack of depth compared to Real. If Berlin can win the opener, the series will take on a new angle when the pressure hits Madrid – one of the favorites to go all the way to Charleroi – in the second leg.

Quotes Head Coaches

RODL, HENRIK
Alba Berlin
"We respect Real Madrid to the fullest. They are one of, if not the, best team in Europe right now. They have very good players that also play together as a team very well. Offensively Smith and Bullock are the main guys we need to stop but everybody else is very dangerous as well. Of course we are the underdogs in this matchup. But despite all our respect we will be looking for our chances. We have the defensive talent to be able to limit Real’s offense. But we also have to be right on point on offense as well. We have already had a couple of very good games in the ULEB Cup this season and I hope we will be able to top that in this series."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"It is very important that we face this game pretending it is only one game, not two with the second at home. That way we will be able to play with full intensity and commit little mistakes. Many people see us as favorite but games in the ULEB Cup and the Spanish League show that there rae no favorites beforehand, and that the games must be won on the court. Albe Berlin is a solid team with a powerful starting five. They are stable and rebound well in the offensive end. They also run the fastbreak so it will not be easy to beat them, especially in Berlin."

Players

Louis Bullock - Real Madrid Real Madrid got closer to make it to the ULEB Cup quarterfinals by beating Alba 65-74 in front of an excited sellout crowd at Max Schmeling Halle in Berlin, Germany on Wednesday. As such, Madrid gets a nine-point lead in the two-way series, which now travel to the Spanish capital for the second and decisive leg in Palacio Vistalegre. Louis Bullock led the winners with 13 points and 6 assists. Raul Lopez added 12 points while Axel Hervelle and Marko Milic each had 11 for Madrid, which led all game, often by double digits. Chris Owens had 21 points and 8 rebounds for Alba. Julius Jenkins added 14 points while Will Avery had 10 for the hosts, who trailed all the way since the opening basket. Lopez and an outstanding Bullock allowed Madrid to get a 43-55 lead late in the third quarter. Avery and Owens fueled an Alba comeback that got the hosts as close as 64-68 with 2 minutes to go, before Lopez and Hervelle combined for 6 points in the final minue to give Madrid an important lead in the series.

Avery and Hervelle started the scoring for their respective teams before Bullock sent a message with 6 points in a row that made it 5-9 for Madrid. Koko Archibong and Sharrod Ford answered inside to make it 8-9, but then Alba's offense started to struggle against Madrid's impressive defense. The hosts would score nothing but a layup by Ford during the last 5 minutes of the first quarter. In the meantime, Hervelle, Milic and Blagota Sekulic found easy baskets and Charles Smith crowned Madrid's great first quarter with a triple good for a 10-20 lead. Eduardo Hernandez-Sonseca added a basket for Madrid to open the second quarter, before Nicolai Simon finished Alba's drought with his midrange jumper. Avery and Nenad Canak joined him, and with Alba's defense now in ommand, it was Madrid missing shots. Julius Jenkins buried 2 consecutive triples that brought Alba as close as 22-24. As the defenses turned even more physical game, there were no more easy baskets to be had on either end of the court, but Alba suffered from Madrid's incredible 15 offensive rebounds in the first half, which were enough for the guests to reestablish their double-digit advantage, 26-36 at the break.

Julius Jenkins - Alba BerlinAlba came out of intermission with improved effectiveness on the boards and 7 quick points between Jenkins and Owens. Even though Owens remained strong inside, hitting more baskets, Madrid now used fastbreaks and triples by Lopez and Bullock to sustain a big lead, 37-48. Canak hit a rare triple for Alba, but Felipe Reyes, Smith and Lopez with a triple made it 43-55 again. Owens, Ruben Boumtje Boumntje and Jenkins with a fastbreak helped Alba close within 49-57 at the end of three quarters. In the last one, Madrid continued to play cat-and-mouse: Kerem Tunceri hit his first three-pointer to make it 49-62 before Jenkins and Archibong buried their own to get Alba within 5 points, 57-62. Hernandez-Sonseca and Reyes worked inside now to push the difference to 59-68 again. Owens got hot then with 7 consecutive points, including his first triple, for a 64-68 score with less than 2 minutes left. With point difference being the objective more than ever, Lopez hit 4 free throws and passed to Hervelle for a buzzer-beating layup that expanded the Madrid margin to 65-74 at the finish.

Head Coaches

RODL, HENRIK
Alba Berlin
"In the first half, we had a lot of problems under the basket and with that it is hard to look good against such a strong opponent. Maybe we had too much respect in the beginning. The four-point deficit with one minute to go would have been ideal for us, but unfortunately in the end it is nine points. But nevertheless it is not impossible. We already proved that we are strong on the road."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"I knew this was going to be a competitive game. "e began the game pretty serious, but after that we had some trouble with our game and our rebounding. But we managed to keep up our intensity. I know, that Alba can play better in the second game and we have a lot of games the week before. So we will prepare for another competitive game at home."

Players

OWENS, CHRIS
Alba Berlin
"They played great in the first half and with their offensive rebounds hurt us a lot. I don't know what to say about our rebounding in this period. But there are two games and there are two chances. After this loss you can lie down or stand up. We will go to Madrid and fight for our second chance."
LOPEZ, RAUL
Real Madrid
"It was a tough game. These guys played a hard game on both ends of the court. They are big and athletic. But our big guys also are good. Axel Hervelle and Felipe Reyes are very smart on the offensive rebounds. I think the second game will be tough, too, but now we play at home, where we feel more comfortable than on the road."
