THE TAKE

Turk Telekom hopes to rejoin the fight to reach the Quarterfinal Playoffs in Last 16 Group K when it hosts Gran Canaria 2014 on Tuesday at 18:15 CET. Telekom (1-3) comes off its first win against previously undefeated Crvena Zvezda, avoiding to be knocked off in the process. Gran Canaria (2-2) will make it to the next round if it wins and Zvezda (3-1) downs CEZ Nymburk (2-2) due to its tie-break advantage against the Czech League perennial champion. Telekom may be without power forward Erwin Dudley, did not play in the Turkish League this weekend. If Dudley stays sidelined, center Kris Lang and power forward Lamayn Wilson will see most minutes under the baskets, with veteran big man Huseyin Besok coming off the bench. Lang and Besok are old-school centers with good post skills and determination, ready to battle against blue-collar big men James Augustine and Sitapha Savane. Meanwhile, Wilson will try to open the court with his shots from downtown against Will McDonald. Telekom must be very concerned on stopping Jaycee Carroll, who is in great shape lately. Carroll is Gran Canaria's main option at both wings, but coach Pedro Martinez can also count on streak shooter Melvin Sanders, defensive stopper Jim Moran or physical combo guard Josh Fisher. Carroll is ready to test his unlimited range against experienced shooter Serkan Erdogan. Moran had the tough mission to guard a physical player like Bekir Yarangume. Meanwhile, Fisher must use his quickness and aggressivity against Soner Senturk. Umit Sonkol can be the hosts' X-factor due to his versatility and offensive rebounds. Telekom is sued to play twin point guards, using Demond Mallet and Tutku Acik together on court. Acik is a pass-first point guard and Mallet comes off a 25-point game in his team's win in Belgrade. Even with that, that option leaves the team a bit undersized to guard Carroll or Sanders. Mallet is ready to go against another experienced, well-rounded point guard like Marcus Norris. Meanwhile, Acik will test his creativity and court vision against a good defensive player like Tomas Bellas. Gran Canaria must use its advantage under the baskets - especially if Dudley stays sidelined - and expect a good game from Carroll to get what could become a go-ahead road win. Telekom must play the way it did in the fourth quarter against Zvezda - aggressive, running the floor and finding shooting options for Mallet and Wilson. Expect an interesting game in Ankara, Turkey.

Jaycee Carroll - Gran Canaria 2014 (photo cbgrancanaria.net)Jaycee Carroll scored 22 points, but none more important than 2 game-winning free throws in the closing seconds as Gran Canaria 2014 survived a thrilling fourth quarter to register a 78-79 road win over Turk Telekom. Granca seemingly had it wrapped up with a 15-point lead midway through the third quarter, but Lamayne Wilson and Bekir Yarangume led an 11-0 finish to the quarter and set up a fantastic fourth quarter, which featured eight ties and six lead changes before the dust settled and Carroll hit the clutch free throws. The win saw Gran Canaria improve to 3-2 in Group L and potentially clinch a Quarterfinals berth depending on the result between Crvena Zvezda and CEZ Nymburk later in the day. Meanwhile Telekom dropped to 1-4 and lost its last hopes of advancing. James Augustine came up big with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the winners, while Marcus Norris added 11 points and 4 assists and Josh Fisher scored 10. Wilson paced Telekom in defeat with 25 points, Huseyin Besok posted 15 points and 10 boards, Soner Senturk scored a career-best 13 plus 7 assists and Yarangume finished with 12.

Carroll started the ball rolling for Gran Canaria, but Wilson connected from downtown to soon put the hosts ahead. The early minutes were close and the score was tied at 7-7 after a Sitapha Savane layup. Kris Lang pushed Telekom up 7-11 before a rain of threes in a row from Jim Moran, Norris and Carroll put the visitors ahead for good. Wilson responded with a three, but a pair of baskets from Norris and Augustine gave Granca a comfortable cushion. It reached 14-22 when Augustine sank free throws. Yarangume trimmed the deficit to 3 with a three-pointer, but Daniel Kickert ended the quarter with a basket to make it 21-26 for Granca. Fisher took his turn in the spotlight with 5 points to open the second quarter, giving his team a double-digit lead. Senturk and Besok tried to rally the home side, but a Melvin Sanders three kept Gran Canaria in control. Besok even stepped outside for a triple only to see Carroll better him with a four-point play. Augustine added a layup as the visitors took a 39-52 lead into the halftime break.

Augustine stretched the lead to 15 with the first basket of the second half and Kickert later made it 16 at the midway point of the third quarter as all signs pointed to a Gran Canaria victory. However Turk Telekom had other plans. After Will McDonald scored on the offensive glass to make it 50-64 with three minutes remaining in the quarter, the visitors were held scoreless as Wilson and Yarangume teamed for 10 of Telekom’s 11 unanswered points. Yarangume completed the comeback with a three-pointer at the start of the fourth quarter. Norris put Granca back ahead, but Besok tied it and Wilson put the home team ahead for the first time since the opening minutes. But the drama was just getting started. The game seemed to be tied or see the lead change hands on almost every possession. Norris made it 68-70 for the visitors, but Yarangume had Telekom up 72-70. Fisher made it 72-74 before Wilson had Telekom up 76-74. Augustine tied the score at 77-77 from the line with a minute left. Wilson got back to the line and put Telekom ahead, but made only 1 of 2 free throws. Carroll took advantage by drawing a foul and sinking the 2 game-winning free throws.
