THE TAKE

Two teams fighting to survive in Group D face each other in Gdynia, Poland, where Asseco Prokom welcomes Armani Jeans Milano on Wednesday at 20:15 CET. Prokom (0-2) is only team in Group D still looking for its first win while Milano (1-1) downed EWE Baskets last week, bouncing back from its initial loss against defending champion Panathinaikos. AJ Milano may be without Massimo Bulleri and Joey Beard, who did not play against Montepaschi Siena in the Italian League this weekend. It will be a special game for Prokom center Pape Sow, who played for Milano last season. Sow is set to play the most minutes around the baskets with Ronnie Burrell, who is in great shape recently. They will get support from Jan Jagla, who offers deep range and mobility off the bench, while center Adam Hrycaniuk brings defense and strength. Burrell has a tough matchup against reigning Eurocup MVP Marius Petravicius, who is in the prime of his career. Meanwhile, Sow is set for a big battle under the boards against rebounding ace Mason Rocca while Jagla will test his outside shooting against Mike Hall. If Bulleri stays sidelined, Morris Finley will be his team's reference against Prokom as its floor general. Finley has an interesting matchup against Tyrone Brazelton and Daniel Ewing, who are set to share the point guard duties for Prokom. Milano's main concern, however, will be slowing David Logan and especially Qyntel Woods, who ranks fourth among all Euroleague scorers (22.5 ppg.) and is tied for first in rebounds (10 rpg.). Logan is a natural-born scorer able to create his own shot while Woods simply has the complete package and is set for a career-best season. Jonas Maciulis seems to be the right man to stop Woods due to his quick first step, experience and aggressiveness. Maciulis is also a mismatch due to his strength and quickness. Stefano Mancinelli may see some minutes against Woods, too. Meanwhile, Alex Acker will test his defensive skills against Logan, with Marco Mordente ready to offer determination, court sense and deep range off the bench. Milano must play aggressive and keep Logan and Woods in check in order to have a chance to go back home with a win. Prokom must play up-tempo and feed its two superstars in one-on-one situations. Above all, expect a big game in Gdynia this week.

GAME NOTES

Asseco Prokom Gdynia

Forward Qyntel Woods scored a Euroleague career-high 23 points in last season’s Top 16 finale on the road against Armani Jeans. Prokom won that game 72-96.

Center Pape Sow played for his team’s Week 3 opponent, Armani Jeans Milano, last season under head coach Piero Bucchi and alongside five of its current players.

Guard David Logan has scored in double figures in 13 straight Euroleague games. He has also made at least one three-pointer in 13 straight games.

Logan has picked up at least 1 steal in all 17 Euroleague games in which he has played.

Armani Jeans Milano

Jonas Maciulis recorded the 100th steal of his Euroleague career last week.

Only 9 players on Milano have seen action in the first two games, which ties it for the fewest contributors so far, along with EWE Baskets Oldenburg.

Quotes Head Coaches

PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"Armani Jeans are for sure stronger than a year ago. They are dangerous at every single position and it will be a very hard game for us. Every score is possible. For us, what is most important is to play better than we did in the first and second games. I'm sure that all of my players will fight from the first to the last second."
BUCCHI, PIERO
Armani Jeans Milano
"On Wednesday in Poland we have to play with the same consistency we had last week in Germany against Oldenburg. Asseco Prokom lost the first two games of the regular season, but nevertheless they are very good team, with talented and experienced players we know very well. We know it'll be a difficult game that we need to approach with the right intensity and consistency, defending tough for 40 minutes. Winning in Gdynia would let us look ahead with more confidence toward our future in the Euroleague."

Players

SOW, PAPE
Asseco Prokom
"I played there last season, they changed some players but stayed very strong everywhere on the court. We have to stay focused and be ready for a tough game. Then, we will have a chance to win against them."
MANCINELLI, STEFANO
Armani Jeans Milano
"It's a very important game for us: every game is fundamental in the Euroleague in order to get a pass to reach the Top 16. We want to continue on the road we took last week, winning in Germany. It'll be a tough game, against a good team like Prokom with many good players. I know Qyntel Woods very well, and I know he's a great talent. We have to try not to let him get into the game. We have to play a very consistent game, especially playing in defense like we did against Oldenburg last Wednesday."
David Logan - Asseco ProkomAsseco Prokom Gdynia defended its home court 88-83 against Armani Jeans Milano and in the process registered its first win of the season. David Logan scored a season-high 23 points and Pape Sow registered his first career double-double to lead the Polish champs, who are now 1-2 in Group D and host Euroleague champion Panathinaikos next week. Milano fell to 1-2 and hosts BC Khimki next week. The visitors led by 9 points after 10 minutes thanks their suffocating defense, but Prokom found its offense in the second quarter and turned the game around fueled by Logan’s 17 first-half points. Jan-Hendrick Jagla came off the bench to score 16. Sow added 15 and 10 rebounds in an inspired effort against his old team from last season, and Daniel Ewing chipped in 12 for the winners. Milano was led by Morris Finley’s 25 points. Marius Petravicius scored 20 while Alex Acker and Jonas Maciulis added 18 and 11 points, respectively. Prokom out-rebounded Milano 43-29, including 14 offensive boards, in a very physical game that counted 70 free throws between the two teams.

Marius Petravicius scored the game’s first points with 2 foul shots to spark a 0-6 run by Milano. Acker added a baseline jumper, and Stefano Mancinelli fed Petravicius for a wide-open layup to force an early Prokom timeout. Milano’s defense suffocated the Porkom attack till Logan finally hit a three-pointer with 6:24 to play in the first. Petravicius used his size to work for 2 points in the lane, but Logan sliced into the paint for a nice layup. Morris Finley penetrated and scored a three-point play to put Milano up 5-11. Adam Hrycaniuk then responded with a field goal and a foul shot of his own. Ronnie Burrell drained a three from the top of the key, but Jonas Maciulis matched him with a triple and added 2 foul shots the next trip down, 11-15. Jan-Hendrick Jagla came of the bench to hit 2 free throws and then put back a missed free throw by Logan to pull Prokom to within 2 points. Acker scored in the post and Mike Hall drained a three at the buzzer to send Milano into the second quarter up 16-25.

Pape Sow scored inside to start the second period, and Qyntel Woods, who had spent most of the first quarter on the bench, drove in for a basket-plus-foul to revive Prokom. Logan hit a three-pointer that forced Milano to call for time with Prokom nipping at its heels. Logan nailed another three out of the timeout to cap an 11-0 run and give Prokom its first lead at 27-26. Finley finally answered for Milano with a three-pointer, but Logan drove in for the tough layup to tie the game. Petravicius scored in the paint and went 1 for 2 moments later from the line. Milano saw Hall go to the bench favoring his right leg after an awkward fall. After empty trips by both teams, Logan hit a three that knotted the score at 32-32. Petravicius went 1-for-2 from the line, but Hrycaniuk put in an offensive board as the lead seesawed back and forth. Woods used a beautiful spin move to get free in the lane and hit the short jumper, and Burrell tipped in a missed free throw by Sow to give Prokom a 43-35 lead. Milano shaved off 4 points to cut the deficit to 43-39 at halftime.

Morris Finley - AJ MilanoMilano opened the third with a 2-6 run capped by an Acker three-pointer to tie the game at 45-45. Sow put back an offensive board for 2 points, but Mancinelli immediately matched him with a tip-in of his own. Sow fed Daniel Ewing for a layup to reclaim a 2-point lead. After stealing an inbounds pass, Finley earned 2 points from the free throw line to knot the score once again. Jagla put in an offensive board and then stole a pass and fed Tyrone Brazelton for a breakaway score and a 53-49 lead. Hall came back on the court for Milano, but Sow turned another offensive board into a point from the line. Woods then was ejected from the game on a double technical and Finley made all 4 free throws to bring Milano to within 1 point. Acker reclaimed the lead for the visitors at 54-55 with a layup. Ewing and Finley traded three-pointers and Jagla bracketed a bucket by Petravicius with two triples to put Prokom up 64-60 heading into the final stanza.

Finley and Logan exchanged scores to open the fourth quarter. Logan made 1 of 2 from the line after an unsportsmanlike foul by Marco Mordente. After stealing the ball from Hall, Sow hit a sweet turnaround jumper. Maciulis scored off an offensive rebound, but Brazelton drained a three from deep. Acker answered with 3 points on an acrobatic layup plus a foul shot, but Prokom pushed out to a 77-67 advantage on a jumper by Sow and a triple by Jagla with 6:30 to play. Maciulis hit a jumper, but Sow, completely in the offensive flow against his former teammates, swished another basket. Prokom went ahead by 10 once again on a great team play that ended in a monster slam by Sow. But Milano was not done quite yet and clawed to within 81-79 on 8 straight free throws, 6 by Petravicius and 2 by Maciulis. Logan then stepped up and drove in for a clutch score to stop the Milano comeback. Milano began to foul intentionally and Finley hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds to play to cut the lead to 86-83. But Ewing sealed the win by calmly making both foul shots.

Head Coaches

PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"Rebounding was definitely the key to success in today's game. We were working hard on this element for the last two weeks, and I'm happy that we were better on both ends of the court today to get our first Euroleague win in this new gym."
BUCCHI, PIERO
Armani Jeans Milano
"I think that the game wasn't so bad, but of course on the road, you have to be more aggressive on the boards. Asseco Prokom had too many second chances on offense, and in my opinion that was the biggest reason why we lost."

Players

HRYCANIUK, ADAM
Asseco Prokom
"After two losses, it was a very important and a very hard game for us, but we won and I am very happy because of that. We were better in rebounding and that was the key to win this tough game. The atmosphere inside the team will now be better before next week's game against Panathinaikos."
MANCINELLI, STEFANO
Armani Jeans Milano
"I don't know what happened. We started good, but later it only got worse. We lost a game that was very important for my team. We have to change our mentality in the next game and keep the same intensity for all 40 minutes."
