THE TAKE

Two serious Final Four contenders will square off for a much-anticipated battle in the Greek capital on Thursday when Panathinaikos hosts Montepaschi Siena at OAKA Sports Hall. The Greek champs bounced back from a rare blowout loss to Barcelona in Week 2 by cruising past Nancy in France last week behind strong showings from veteran stars Mike Batiste and Dimitris Diamantidis. Moreover, guard Vassilis Spanoulis has returned from injury and will see action, further bolstering one of the deepest and most talented backcourts in the league. Meanwhile Montepaschi is off to an undefeated start after downing Barcelona last week. Newcomer Henry Domercant his some big shots in his best game yet for the club, while the core of stars from last year’s Final Four squad continued its strong play. The Italian champs have been extremely efficient so far and are among the top four in the league in steals (10.7 spg.), two-point shooting (56.6%), free-throw shooting (85.3%), while committing just 9 turnovers per game – the fewest in the league. But head coach Simone Pianigiani’s men won’t get many easy baskets from the Greens. With the quintet of Diamantidis, Spanoulis, Sarunas Jasikevicus, Drew Nicholas and Dusan Kecman in charge of the ball, steals won’t come easily. But that won’t stop ball hawks Terrell McIntyre, Romain Sato, Domercant and Morris Finley from trying. Rimas Kaukenas joins McIntyre, Domercant and Finley in forming a tough backcourt that will challenge the Greens, while Sato will square off with Stratos Perperoglou as small forward. The strength of these teams can be seen in their big men, as both teams boast versatile players that can score inside and out. Batiste, Kostas Tsartsaris, Nikola Pekovic and Antonis Fotsis make up a powerful force that will go up against the likes of Ksistof Lavrinovic, Ben Eze and Shaun Stonerook. In addition to all the great players on both sides, the battle on the sidelines between the legendary Zeljko Obradovic and the up-and-coming Pianigiani will also impact the game greatly. The depth on these teams makes it tough to single out on particular matchup that could outweigh the others, nevertheless the duel between perennial Best Defender Award winner Diamantidis and All-Euroleague pick McIntyre at point guard will be crucial for their respective leadership qualities as much as for setting the pace. If one of those two players can outplay his opponent, that team will enjoy a distinct advantage in a game that could be a preview of an even bigger one this May in Berlin.

GAME NOTES

Montepaschi Siena

  • Montepaschi Siena has good memories from Athens. In the 2003-04 season, Montepaschi beat Panathinaikos 77-86 and secured a spot at the Euroleague Basketball Final Four in Tel Aviv. Last season Montepaschi lost 77-76 at OAKA, but clinched a ticket to the Quarterfinal Playoffs with that result.
  • Guard Henry Domercant matched his Euroleague career high with 29 points against Panathinaikos in an April 2005 Quarterfinal Playogg game. Domercant, then with Efes Pilsen, scored 29 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a 102-96 overtime loss at OAKA. Current Panathinaikos swingman Dusan Kecman was a teammate of Domercant’s on that team.
  • Big man Ksistof Lavrinovic and guard Rimas Kaukenas were teammates with Panathinaikos guard Sarunas Jasikevicius on the Lithuanian Olympic team last summer. Lavrinovic and Jasikevicius were also teammates on the Lithuanian side that won the 2003 European championships in Sweden.

Panathinaikos

  • Guard Dimitris Diamantidis needs just 3 more three-pointers to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Center Nikola Pekovic leads the league in per-minute scoring this season, accounting for 0.77 points every 60 seconds. Pekovic is averaging 13 points over 16:47 minutes in three games so far.
  • Power forward Antonis Fotsis and Montepaschi guard Henry Domercant were teammates at Dynamo Moscow last season, helping the club reach the ULEB Cup semifinals.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
“Montepaschi Siena plays very aggressive defense and they are very aggressive in offense too. During the summer they kept the majority of their players and made some really effective additions like Domercant and Finley. What I have seen in Montepaschi is that they have clear roles, which help them perform at the highest level and target the Final Four. Even players that stay in the court for five minutes know what to do and this is important for every team. If we want to win, we have to play seriously, to have good rhythm and show our quality in a full arena. On Thursday everything starts in defense.”
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena

"For us, this is a very difficult match because now Panathinaikos has even more options than last year and so it's almost impossible to foresee all the things that they will try to do during the game. We will play with our identity,  and we must also be able to disturb especially their first options. They have a proverbial game of pick-and-roll with almost  perfect spacing and with outside players of great quality. I think that Panathinaikos can play with three point guards all together as Diamantidis, Spanoulis and Jasikevicius, or Drew Nicholas with Peperloglu and Hatzivrettas too, in order to make the play very physical. In addition, we should also pay attention to post-up situations and we know how mean either Pekovic or Batiste, who remains one of the top scorer of the team, can be, which is not to mention players like Fotsis and Tsartsaris. The third important aspect will be again the post-up play but the ones made by outside players such as Diamantidis, so we will be focused on helping. Panathinaikos has lost in Barcelona but their players are accustomed to the Final Four kind of pressure. Playing at  home for the first time in Euroleague after losing with an unusual score in Barcelona, they will have great motivation."

Players

NICHOLAS, DREW
Panathinaikos
“The last few years I face Montepaschi Siena in the Euroleague and the Italian League, so I know what to expect. Obviously, they are the group leaders, as they stay unbeaten after three games. We want to take the highest place possible, so we need to beat them on Thursday. One of the reasons why Siena is always at the highest level is because they have kept all the basic players exactly like CSKA Moscow and Panathinaikos, which makes them one of the most successful teams in Europe. My team is trying to accomplish the best balance possible on the court and honestly it wouldn't be right to be in the best shape so early. We go step by step and definitely the game against Siena is a very important one, since we need the victory.”
DOMERCANT, HENRY
Montepaschi Siena
"It will be a very tough game. They are a very strong team and they have a lot of strong players. Panathinaikos is one of the best teams in Europe and we respect them. We know that we have to play very hard on defense, stay focused and play together. They have athletic big men and good shooters, so they are a very dangerous team. Furthermore. in Athens there is a great atmosphere around the court, the fans are very devoted and support the team during the game. So we have to stay focused on the game and try to get an important win."
Antonis Fotsis - PanathinaikosPanathinaikos turned around the standings in Group B on Thursday by ending Montepaschi Siena's undefeated season to this point with a down-to-the-wire 81-76 home victory at OAKA in Athens, Greece. The victory meant that Panathinaikos and Montepaschi, with 3-1 records, are both tied for first place now with Regal F.C. Barcelona. Down by a point with under 2 minutes to play after a a back-and-forth game, the Greens relied on good-as-gold Sarunas Jasikevicius and Dimitris Diamantidis for a pair of go-ahead layups before finishing the game on defense and at the foul line. Antonis Fotsis and Nikola Pekovic paced the winners with 14 points each, while Diamantidis had 11, Jasikevicius and Vassilis Spanoulis 10 each. Most important was how Panathinaikos won the rebounding war 37 to 23 with eight different players grabbing 3 boards or more. Montepaschi got 22 ponts from Ksistof Lavrinovic, 17 from Romain Sato, 14 from Henry Domercant and 10 from Rimantas Kaukenas. A three-pointer by Sato had the guests up 73-74 in the next-to-last minute, but only a short shot by Kaukenas fell after that as the Panathinaikos put the wraps on Terrell McIntyre, who was held to 3 points, his Euroleague career low.

The game commenced with Sarunas Jasikevicius penetrating to get the scoreboard rolling, only to be bettered by Terrell McIntyre, who knocked down a three-pointer for a 2-3 Siena lead. Panathinaikos replied with an 8-0 blast as Kostas Tsartaris contributed 5 points, forcing Siena head coach Simone Pianigiani to call timeout. The visitors' Lithuanian tandem of Kaukenas and Lavrinovic scored on layups to get Siena within 10-7. Spanoulis entered the court for the first time this Euroleague season and soon found Mike Batiste for a basket and the free throw that came with it to build a 15-7 lead. Panathinaikos was now anchoring its offense in the paint and, as a result, Pekovic picked up the scoring slack and forged a double-digit lead, 19-9. The hosts were dominating the battle of the boards, having grabbed 10 compared to Siena's single one until then. They were also a perfect 7-for-7 on two-point shots until then. Pekovic kept wreaking havoc in the paint, so it wasn't long before the lead soared to 22-11. Still, Siena was not ready to surrender and Domercant loaded his pistol to fire in a triple that cut the difference to 22-14 after one quarter.

Ksistof Lavrinovic - Montepaschi SienaDomercant blasted another three-pointer to open the second quarter and Kaukenas followed with a layup to close the gap even more, 22-19. However, Panathinaikos pulled a 9-0 run from its sleeve to once again break the game open at 31-19. The fans were on their feet by then, but Domercant gave them more to consider: he first unleashed a triple and then found Lavrinovic on the arc to copy him and keep Siena on the hosts' heels, 33-27. Pekovic worked his way in the paint to calm Panathinaikos, but the hot-handed Lavrinovic was on fire and drilled another triple to make it 37-33. Panathinaikos now capitalized on Batiste's energetic play within the paint to open up the lead again, 41-33, but Lavrinovic -who else?- was ready with his third triple to keep Siena close. Before the half could end, he was joined from downtown by Sato, whose buzzer-beating three-point shot fixed the halftime score at 45-42.

The second half commenced with both teams in low gear offensively, as they remained without a basket for more than 3 minutes. Eventually, Shaun Stonerook broke the ice with a triple - Siena's 10th in 24 minutes - to pull the visitors within 46-45. Then, as Batiste missed a layup, Benjamin Eze scored on a great pass from McIntyre pass to put Siena in front for the first time all game. The tide was now on the guests' side, as Sato capped a 3-12 run that silenced the crowd and boosted Siena to a 46-51 advantage. Panathinaikos had its back on the wall, having scored only one basket - a triple by Spanoulis - in the first 8 minutes of the third quarter. On the other end, Lavrinovic was scoring almost at will against the Greens, so Siena kept a 53-55 lead. Out of nowhere, however, Drew Nicholas connected on a three-pointer to put Panathinaikos on the driver's seat again, 56-55, after 30 minutes.

Fotsis came up huge, with 2 triples among 8 points, to launch the fourth quarter. With that, Panathinaikos had established another, perhaps unexpected double-digit lead, 65-55, but failed to hang onto it. The "usual suspects" among the visitors, Sato and Lavrinovic, combined for 10 points in response, taking advantage of 3 Panathinaikos turnovers in 2 minutes, to let Siena tie 65-65. With 4:56 remaining, Diamantidis nailed an amazing triple and then Jasikevicius drove to the basket to sandwich a shot good for a three-point play by Stonerook, keeping Panathinaikos in front, 70-68. Siena did not remain in catch-up mode for too long, though, thanks to a basket, a free throw and a triple by Sato that vaulted the guests into the lead again, 73-74 with 2:04 left to play. Big-time players Jasikevicius and Diamantidis down the stretch to give the Greens a vital 79-76 lead, as in the waning seconds Stonerook missed his try to tie the game with the triple. Kaukenas was forced to send Spanoulis to the foul line. The latter hit both free throws to seal the outcome of the game in favour of the hosts who remained undefeated at home.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
“We played a really good game and the only big problem for us was the turnovers. Some very good things happened both offensively and defensively and the only situation where we had problems was when we tried to play fast. So, we committed turnovers in half-court situations and that was not due to pressure by Siena but due to the fact that we were hurrying to play fast. If you take a look at the stats, in ranking points we are 107 and Siena is only 67. So, despite the 40-point difference we only beat them by five. That’s incredible. Congratulations to the players for playing with big will and that’s very important because they beat Siena, a team which so far was regarded the best team until now. Once again, I would like to thank our fans for creating the right atmosphere to help the team."

"Regarding the turnovers, as I said before the game, Siena is one of the teams that its opponents in both the Italian League and Euroleague commit 21 turnovers on average. So, one of the keys would be to control the game and not commit many turnovers. Today, we were on average with 19 turnovers. This is not only because Siena is an aggressive team. I truly believe that some of them were not necessary. You do not the pass the ball directly into your opponents' arms. Why did this happen? Part of it was lack of concentration and part of it was because some players were tired. But when you are up by 10 points and you give 3 easy fastbreaks because of turnovers, you turn back and play defense. You don’t seat around and cry and shout. Just play, play, play."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
“This was a great game for both teams tonight. We did not approach the game as strong as we wanted to in the first minutes, but then we played Panathinaikos face-to-face. And when you do that here in Greece, it's very encouraging. It was a big test for us. In the end the little details decided the game, but we proved that we are one of the top teams and that’s important. We were down by 10 two or three times, but we still managed to recover. Usually Panathinaikos kills the game in such situations, but we resisted and recovered and that’s good."

"My players should get smarter and get more fouls. We only shot 10 free throws tonight. Another problem we had was the rebounds, but in the end we had more steals and less turnovers and that’s what brought the game to details."

Players

FOTSIS, ANTONIS
Panathinaikos
“It was a tough game. We knew that Siena is a great team, so we came out focused and determined. I hit some big shots tonight and I’m happy because I wanted to help my team win the game. What worries us though is the fact that once again we had quite few ups and downs in our performance. This is due to lack of concentration, which we should and will correct in the next games.”
PEKOVIC, NIKOLA
Panathinaikos
“I think that we did a good job tonight. It was a high-quality game and Siena proved that –and this is the case also with Barcelona- it is one of the strongest teams right now. However, despite our dry spells, it was a very important and crucial win for us. The keys tonight were our defense and the fact that we dominated the boards. Yet, we have to improve our performance in order to be able to play effectively throughout the whole game.”
STONEROOK, SHAUN
Montepaschi Siena
“We just didn’t play good enough to win the game. We didn’t do the things we needed to. We missed a lot of wide open shots and we didn’t play well together at times. What’s frustrating is that still we could have won the game. We had the opportunity to win. It’s very disappointing, but we will bounce back. Besides it’s not that we lost by a bad team tonight. Panathinaikos is a very good team and we’ll get better from this experience.”
