THE TAKE

Brose Baskets will look to keep its momentum going when it hosts winless BK Ventspils in a Group H showdown on Tuesday in Bamberg, Germany. Brose will seal a Last 16 spot this week if Lauretana Biella beats CEZ Basket Nymburk in the other Week 5 Group H contest. Otherwise Bamberg will find itself in a must-win contest on the road next week at Biella. Brose topped Nymburk 85-73 in its last game before the winter break led by the center duo of Tibor Pleiss and Elton Brown, who combined for 28 points and 11 boards in 40 minutes. Meanwhile Ventspils slumped to a fourth straight loss despite another strong showing from promising young playmaker Janis Strelnieks. Bamberg pounded Ventspils 62-85 in Week 1 as Predrag Suput posted a season-high 18 points. The duels to watch this time could be at point guard and center. Anton Gavel and John Goldsberry form a strong duo at point guard for the hosts, which will be tough for Strelnieks to overcome. Meanwhile Aaron Pettway is Ventspils only real option at center to tackle Pleiss and Brown. Bamberg is also talented at the wings with former German League MVP Casey Jacobsen and team leader Suput, who’ll match up with Dairis Bertans, Sandis Buskevics and forward Ernests Kalve. Ventspils has two main obstacles to overcome to win on the road: Its awful three-point shooting (second worst in the league at 19.2%) and turnovers (fourth most in the league at 17 per game). Meanwhile Bamberg is second in the Eurocup in three-point accuracy at 48.2%. The Latvian champs must turn those numbers around to have a serious chance at a road win That won’t be easy for head coach Agris Galvanovskis’s young team, which has lost its two road games by an average of 24 points. Nevertheless, the talent and hunger on the Ventspils roster can explode at any moment, making it a team always worth watching. However, Bamberg enters the game as the clear favorite and a team with an eye on the Last 16 already.

Tibor Pleiss - Brose BasketsBrose Baskets had a pleasent night at home when it thrashed winless BK Ventspils by 100-51. A storm led by Tibor Pleiss launched the hosts to an early 20-4 and they never looked back. The wins boosts Brose Baskets to a 4-1 record, but CEZ Nymburk's win over Lauretana Biella, leaves all options open forthe last week in Group H. Meanwhile, Venstpils drops another one and is 0-5. Beckham Wyrick led the winners with 16 points, Pleiss added 15, amd Elton Brown and Predrag Suput had 11 apiece. For the losers, Dairis Bertans had 21 points.

Anton Gavel's three and four straight points by Tibor Pleiss made it a 7-0 start for Brose Baskets. Dairis Bertans finally replied from Venstpils' side, but Pleiss, unstoppable, added another dunk and free throws to soon make it a double-digit lead for the hosts, 14-4. Pleiss kept pacing Brose Baskets as he was up to 14 points in his personal column when the scoreboard reflected a 20-4. Bertans scored again to show some vital signs for Venstpils when it was 21-6, but no bigger news arrived when the first quarter reached its ending, 33-11. Nothing changed in the second quarter. A steamroller named Brose Baskets quick jumped to a 40-15 lead as all players on court contributed in offense. At the same time, Bertans, the main guy in offense for Venstpils, was now on the bench. Things didn't change much and by the halftime break, Brose Baskets dominated by 30 points, 52-22.

It was the same story all over again in the third period. A 15-4 run with points by Beckham Wyrick and Predrag Suput launched Brose Baskets to new heights, 67-26. Bertans kept adding points for Venstpils and this time Arturs Berzins joined in, but Gavel blasted athree to put an end to the third period, 78-35. In the last period, Ventspils managed to hold Brose Baskets at more reasonable numbers as the hosts wouldn't force it too much. Ventspils' night from the arc, 2 of 12 at that point, wasn't helping either and the 23 assists of the hosts against the 3 by the guests pretty much spoke for itself. Brose Baskets was combining for an overall index rating of 132 while Ventspils got stuck at 26. In the last minutes, the hosts pushed a little harder and wuickly went up with a 19-10 run en route to a clear win.

Head Coaches

FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
“It was very important for us to start well. After our loss on Saturday we were very disappointed about our performance. So we were more than ready today to make up for it. We played very good on offense and defense, almost all the time. We had good quality during the game, although we were leading by more than 30 points.”
GALVANOVSKIS, AGRIS
BK Ventspils
“Congratulations to Bamberg, a good team with good defense. 51 points is excellent. We had problems, because two of our starting five players were injured. We are a very young team and I think this - even though the result was not good for us - was a very good experience and challenge.”

Players

PLEISS, TIBOR
Brose Baskets
“We were hot from the start and did not lose our concentration, even when we were leading by more than 30 points. We scored and fought and played very good defense.”
