THE TAKE

Triumph Lyubertsy will remain atop Group E if it can win its home game against Antwerp Giants. Coach Stanislav Eremin's Russian squad dropped to 3-1 as it lost on a buzzer-beater against Benetton Fribourg. Pascal Perrier-David's last second shot washed away Lyubertsy's 14-point halftime lead and proved that the Russians are beatable. Coach Eremin's troops once again struggled from the foul line - 14-of-22 (64%) - and it cost them in the end. Triumph also allowed the Swiss to shoot 52% from the floor. Power forward Ognjen Askrabic's 13 points and eight rebounds paced six players in double figure scoring. So Eremin knows he has the offensive firepower to beat teams. But 17 turnovers were too many as well - to go with the foul shooting. If Lyubertsy can improve on those two areas, expect the Russians to return to their winning ways. Antwerp Giants meanwhile celebrated its first victory by holding off Swans Gmunden to improve to 1-3. Power foward Ian Hanavan had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals while the Belgian side just received a much more balanced effort with five players hitting for at least nine points. If Antwerp would like to move onto the elimination round, a road victory in Russia would help greatly. But Triumph will be out to show that the loss against Fribourg was a fluke.

Ognjen Askrabic - Triumph Triumph Lyubertsy retained at least a share of first place at the midway point in Group E after thrashing the Antwerp Giants 88-67 on Tuesday in Russia. The hosts led from start to finish, as Egor Vyaltsev scored the game's first 7 points and Triumph finished the first period with 12 unanswered points for a 30-12 advantage. Antwerp never got within 10 after that. Ognjen Askrabic and Mire Chatman shined brightest for Triumph, which improved to 4-1 in its first season. Askrabic posted 11 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists, while Chatman scored 16 points on perfect shooting. Terrell Lyday added 14 points, Uros Slokar 13 and Igor Zamanskiy 10 for the winning side. Antwerp dropped to 1-4, thoug three of the team's remaining five games are at home, starting next week against Benetton Fribourg. Brandon Gay paced Antwerp with 14 points, David Toya had 12 and Kris Sergeant and Ian Hanavan posted 10 points apiece.

Brandon Gay - Antwerp GiantsAfter a physical opening minute of play, Triumph caught its rhythm first as Vyaltsev scored in three consecutive possessions to gibe the hosts a 7-0 lead. Gay finally scored Antwerp's first points after nearly three minutes, but the hosts remained in total control as five different players scored during a 12-0 run to finish the period up 30-12. Toya and Sergeant saw Antwerp cut the gap to 32-21 early in the second period, however Triumph never wavered. The hosts' lead reached the 20-point mark on Chatman's triple late in the period. The lead grew to 23 before Lee Wouters made it 55-34 at halftime. Antwerp got as close as 60-44 in the third, but the game was totally one-sided by then and Triumph quickly restored a big lead, that stood at 75-56 after 30 minutes. Fedor Dmitriev gave Triumph its biggest lead, 83-58, midway through the fourth quarter on the way to a convincing win.

Head Coaches

EREMIN, STANISLAV
Triumph Lyubertsy
"We settled the outcome already at the beginning of the match due to a good, aggressive attack. I am happy with the fact that Mire Chatman, after some not-too-successful matches, played a good game. I am not so happy that we missed so many shots, even in easy situations, nor by our low free throw percentage."
VAN CAMP, SVEN
Antwerp Giants
"We played today against a very tough rival, and certainly, we did not play our best. We could not find our game rhythm for a long time. But I am glad at least that we played them relatively even in the last three quarters."

Players

LIKHOLITOV, FEDOR
Triumph Lyubertsy
"I think we played a good game. Most important was winning it, because it was important to win this one. We were surprised a bit by their pressing game, which they started in the second quarter, and it gave us some difficulties. We were able to overcome them, and Triumph still took a deserved victory."
