THE TAKE

A direct fight for the top spot in Group C takes place in Vitoria, Spain, on Wednesday when Tau Ceramica welcomes Lottomatica Roma. Tau is the only unbeaten team in Group C, but Lottomatica is currently on a two-game winning streak. Tau signed shooting guard Robert Hite to a one-month contract to replace Pete Mickael, who is not expected to play in the next three weeks due to a left knee injury. Week 3 MVP Igor Rakocevic and Sergi Vidal already stepped up in Tau's win over Alba Berlin last week, combining for 44 points on 11-for-13 three-point shooting. Rakocevic is currently the Euroleague's top scorer at 21.3 points per game, so Lottomatica must stop him to upset Tau on the road. Lottomatica has its own leader in combo guard Sani Becirovic, while up-and-coming guard Brandon Jennings seems to be the type of player to have a chance at stopping Rakocevic due to his intensity and quick hands. Rodrigo De La Fuente is also a defensive stopper ready to contribute off the bench. Meanwhile, Fernando San Emeterio is set to provide driving skills and strength off the Tau bench. Lottomatica is quite deep at point guard, with Ibby Jaaber, Jennings and Allan Ray able to handle the playmaking duties at any time. They will go head-to-head with a two-time All-Euroleague second team selection in Pablo Prigioni, who is also a former Euroleague assists champion. Prigioni has been playing in pain recently, however, averaging less than 20 minutes per night, so expect Mustafa Shakur to play a big role in this game. The key matchup may will take place in the paint, with All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter facing Lottomatica big man Primoz Brezec. Splitter has come off an injury and seen limited minutes, but he will have to play at full potential to face Brezec. Andre Hutson, Alessandro Tonolli and former Tau forward Roberto Gabini round out Lottomatica's frontcourt. Gabini will pit his shooting skills against three-point threat Mirza Teletovic. Meanwhile, Hutson will have a strong test against Week 1 MVP Will McDonald and big Stanko Barac. Tau is the heavy favorite, as it did not play in the Spanish League this weekend, giving Hite some time to learn the system, as well as resting Prigioni and Splitter. Lottomatica has excelled when it has been able to run the floor, led by an outstanding Becirovic right at the prime of his career. Accordingly, look forward to an exciting but a run-and-gun show in Vitoria on Wednesday.

GAME QUOTES

Tau Ceramica
  • Guard Igor Rakocevic scored a career-high 27 points last week in a 106-65 rout of Alba Berlin. He also matched his career-best in three-pointers made in a game by going 6 for 6 from downtown. This week, Rakocevic needs just 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Center Tiago Splitter is 12 rebounds away from reaching 500 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Center Stanko Barac played under Lottomatica head coach Jasmin Repesa for the Croatian national team at the recent Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
  • Newly signed guard Robert Hite is set to make his Euroleague Basketball debut against Lottomatica.
Lottomatica Roma
  • Guard Sani Becirovic needs just 1 more three-pointer to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Forward Roberto Gabini spent a season-and-a-half with Tau Ceramica between 2003 and 2005. He made his Euroleague debut with the club and helped it reach the 2005 Euroleague championship game. Pablo Prigioni, Tiago Splitter and Sergi Vidal are the only players from the current Tau roster to have played alongside Gabini.
  • Head coach Jasmin Repesa’s next win will be the 75th of his Euroleague Basketball career. Repesa has won 6 games as head coach of Cibona Zagreb, 51 with Fortitudo Bologna and 17 with Roma. He has lost 62 games during that time.
  • Lottomatica is last in the Euroleague in steals so far this season with just 5 per game. Last year the club was second in the Euroleague with 11 steals per game.

"During this one-week period without official competition, we have been working in a bit different fashion. "e used the week to give some rest to players that needed to recover, and to improve our physical condition. We also took advantage of it to prepare our next Euroleague game against Lottomatica, which is a very important game for us. Pete Mickeal is still sidelined, and Pablo Prigioni joined practices recently, early this week, but we are waiting to see how he feels to know if he is going to be ready to play on Wednesday. Lottomatica is a very good team, a competitive squad that counts on a long and deep roster. I honestly think they are able to beat anyone in the Euroleague. They are playing a good and smooth basketball, getting easy buckets and playing fast baskteball. When they have Brezec on court, their inside game gets really strong, but they are also dangerous outside because they can play with with three or four great shooters that force you to open the defense."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"Tau is definetly one of the best teams in Europe, it is made to win the Euroleague and it will be tough. Only if we play as a team we can hope to respond to their game. Tau is a ultra-modern team, with big players under the basket, very aggressive all over the court, especially when they play at home. For that reason concentration will be fundamental".

"My injury is a bit annoying because when I start to feel better a new problem comes up and wastes all the improvement we made. The game against Lottomatica is very important for us. I would like to play and I will do my best to achieve it. I don't care if I have to play on one leg only. Although it's still the beginning of the Euroleague regular season, every game is a key one with the new competition model. If you get a couple of defeats in a row, things would start going bad, so the better way to keep going is to win every contest. Anyway, I thnk our target right now is to build our personality and character as a team. If we can take all the wins during that process, the better, but if we are beat, we must accept them and keep working. Of course, Lottomatica has built an exciting and powerful team, and I think they are able to put us in big trouble in Vitoria. They are a long and quality roster, and count on some experienced players that make them a clear favorite to make it to the next stage."
Sani Becirovic - Lottomatica RomaOne of the Euroleague's last four undefeated teams fell to its first defeat on its own floor on Wednesday as visiting Lottomatica Roma shocked Tau Ceramica with a 90-93 Group C victory in Vitoria, Spain. The victory let Roma tie Tau for first place, both with 3-1 records, while Fenerbahce (2-1) can join them if it defeats winless Union Olimpija at home on Thursday. Roma established double-digit leads early with great defense and held off a furious Tau rally in the final quarter. Tau missed 4 three-pointes in the last 6 minutes with the chance to tie or go ahead. Sani Becirovic led the winners with 23 points, including making 11 of 12 free throws. Primoz Brezec added 18 points for the winners, Andre Hutson 15, Brandon Jennings 13 and Allan Ray 11. For Tau, Igor Rakocevic had 23 points – 21 of them in the second half. Will McDonald added 16 for Tau and Tiago Splitter and Mirza Teletovic 15 each.

Roma went inside to Brezec for an easy layup that Tau matched with McDonald's first dunk. Rodrigo De la Fuente buried the game's first triple and Ray found Brezec for a dunk as Roma shot ahead 2-7. McDonald slammed home an offensive rebound, but Brezec put back one of his own but then stepped out for a huge triple as Roma roared ahead 4-12. Tau didn't call timeout, but rather brought Prigioni and Splitter off the bench to connect on a reverse layup, but Rakocevic had yet to get a shot off due to Roma's sticky defense. a layup and a pair of free throws by Allan Ray were good enough for a double-digit Roma lead, 6-16, after eight minutes, and Tau head coach Dusko Ivanovic took that timeout now. McDonald answered by dunking another offensive rebound, this with a free throw attached, but Ray hit a cutting Brezec to jam at 9-18. Hutson joined Roma's scorers and Tau needed a buzzer-beating triple by McDonald to hold the damage to 12-20 after one quarter.

Will McDonald - Tau CeramicaThings didn’t change a lot in the second quarter, as Roma kept controlling the pace of the game exploiting Tau's weakness and slowness, especially on the defensive end. Becirovic and Hutson took over and led the way for the visitors, as Ivanovic tried Sergi Vidal at point guard as an emergency measure. It didn't work, as a three-pointer by Becirovic gave Roma its biggest lead so far, 18-32 midway through the second quarter. Both teams exchanged baskets for a while, which benefited Roma, until Tau found the right combination for its backcourt with Prigioni, Robert Hite and Vidal. This trio increased the activity on defense, putting more pressure on Roma's ball circulation, good for a short run that brought Tau within 29-38 after 17 minutes. Ray came to the rescue for the visitors then with a huge triple-plus-free throw for a four-point play. When Becirovic repeated from downtown few seconds later, Roma's double-digit lead was restored. Again, Tau finished a quarter fortunately as Prigioni banked in a 9-meter shot to reduce the difference to 39-49 at halftime.

Both teams started at full-throttle after intermission, playing high-tempo basketball and hitting almost every shot, but with opposite approaches. While Tau looked for Splitter inside, Roma threatened from outside as Brandon Jennings exploited his physical superiority over Prigioni to shine, both scoring and feeding the open man. The Roma lead remained steady until McDonald and Rakocevic collected a pair of three-point plays that reduced the gap to 54-60 with four minutes to go in the quarter. Roma didn’t panic, though, and kept working and waiting for Tau’s mistakes, and when they came, the visitors had no mercy. Jennings finished a pair of flashy fast breaks and Becirovic banked a short shot to regain an 11-point margin, 58-69, entering the last minute. Free throws by the Slovenian guard and Robert Hite closed the period with Roma keeping a safe and comfortable lead, 62-71.

Both teams focused on defense at the beginning of the last quarter, knowing that a good start would grant the win. Mustafa Shakur was the first one to break the trend, scoring a layup-plus-foul that was followed by 3 free throws by Rakocevic to get the hosts within 4. The pressure increased, but Hutson and Jaaber came to the rescue and earned the visitors some breathing room. It wasn’t enough, though, against Tau’s shooting accuracy. Prigioni, first, and Teletovic, later, hit from behind the arc to get the home team even closer, 76-78, midway through the period. Hutson and Becirovic supported Roma at that point, preventing Tau from capping the comeback. A basket by Rakocevic made it a 1-point game with three minutes to go, giving the fans a new reason to keep cheering. The lead moved between 1 and 3 points from then on, and game entered last minute with Roma leading 85-86. Hutson scored a layup and Rakocevic answered quickly, as Tau decided to foul Becirovic with 25 seconds to go. He hit both, giving Roma a 3-point lead that forced Tau to take risks and look for a three. Teletovic missed it and Roberto Gabini hit 2 free throws to seal the outcome for the guests. A late three by Prigioni didn't threaten Roma’s win, while Becirovic capped his superb game with a last free throw in the last second for a 90-93 victory.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"The reasons why we lost this game are evident and clear; we can see it on the stats. We started the game in a slow fashion, we weren’t aggressive enough, and what’s very important too, playing at home, we committed 13 turnovers and stole only 4 balls. That lack of intensity was clear both on offense and defense. We played too static and slow. We were a predictable team in the beginning. If you play weak defense, you won’t be able to win a game in such a tough competition as the Euroleague. We gave up 93 points tonight, and even though Lottomatice is a great team, I think we allowed them to play their style and that killed us."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"Winning here is a great feeling. Tau is one of the most difficult teams to beat, not only at their home court, because of their fans, but also on the road. They play a high-intensity basketball with Ivanovic, and to stop their transition game was one of our first goals. We wanted to prevent them from playing speedy basketball and we achieved it. We avoided mistakes for almost the whole game and that allowed us to take them out from their style. We decided not to foul them in the last play.We didn’t want to let them to get a three-point shot, but we wanted to avoid a stupid foul when shooting. Our command was to let them score if they penetrated, because we had two timeouts at that point that gave us some space to manoeuver."

Players

RAKOCEVIC, IGOR
Tau Ceramica
"We lost a very tough game tonight. We had a slow start and that allowed them to get a good advantage that we couldn’t overcome. After halftime we improved but we couldn’t cap the comeback even though we got some open shots to get the lead. We missed them and that must make us learn the lesson. We know we are not unbeatable and the only way to be able to get back to the winning track is to keep working hard."
BREZEC, PRIMOZ
Lottomatica Roma
"We know how hard it is to win here, because Tau didn’t lost a game both in the Euroleague and in the domestic competition for a long time. So we knew what we should expect coming here. I think we prepared the game pretty good, we knew who were their main weapons and we stopped their shooters in the first half. We knew they could come back later but we played smart in the end and managed to win the game. We punished them with the pick-and-roll, taking advantage of our size, With Andre doing a great job in the last minutes, we moved the ball very well, we took good decisions in the end. I feel very proud of how we played tonight. After our last defeat in Italy, our coach told us that today’s game was going to prove our maturity, so the win is very good for us. Now is time to see how to respond in our next domestic game. Basketball is two baskets and a ball, everywhere. I really enjoy playing Euroleague again, I did it in my first years at Olimpija and also played for my national team in summer time, so I didn’t need big adjustment. I love Rome’s project, I like the organization, the team and I have great expectations for this season."
