The Take

Real Madrid welcomes Fenerbahce Istanbul to the Spanish capital for the first time since last season’s Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four. Madrid has lost three in a row and sits last in Group A, though it is 2-1 at home. Fenerbahce has won five straight and leads the group with a 6-1 record; it’s only loss thus far has been at the hands of Madrid. After clinching a top 16 berth last week, Fenerbahce could wrap up the top spot in the group with another win and a loss for Khimki Moscow Region on Friday. Center Gustavo Ayon led six Madrid scorers – five of whom are still with the club – in double figures when Los Blancos disposed of Fenerbahce in the 2015 semifinals with a 96-87 victory. Despite the result, Madrid had no answer for high-flying Fenerbahce big man Jan Vesely, who arrives for this game in great form. Fenerbahce cruised to a 77-66 victory when they met in Round 3, with center Ekpe Udoh and forward Luigi Datome leading the charge. For Madrid, which is last in the league in defense (allowing 86.1 ppg.), that loss was one of only two meetings this season in which it held opponents to less than 80. Traditionally a fan of the three-point shot, Madrid has struggled in that area this season -no Madrid regular is making even 40% of his threes, while Fenerbahce holds opponents to 26.5% three-point shooting, which is third-best in the competition. However with experienced stars like guards Sergio Rodriguez, Sergio Llull and Rudy Fernandez leading the charge, there is reason not to expect Madrid to snap out of its doldrums, though it won’t be easy against a red-hot Fenerbahce squad.

Zeljko Obradovic coached Real Madrid head coach Pablo Laso at Madrid for two seasons during the mid-1990s. They won the 1997 Saporta Cup together.

Pero Antic has played better on the road this season than at home. He’s averaged 11.7 points on 7 of 14 three-point shooting (50%) for a performance index rating of 13 on the road, but just 2.8 points on 1-of-8 three-point shooting (12.5%) for a performance index rating of 5.3 at home.

Jan Vesely scored 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting and drew 10 fouls against Real Madrid in the semifinals at last season’s Turkish Airline Euroleague Final Four in Madrid. He set a career-high with a performance index rating of 31 in that game.

Ekpe Udoh has blocked at least 1 shot in five consecutive games.

Quotes Head Coaches

LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"We are close to the end of this regular season and our games get more important every day. I don't know whether this is a final or not but we need wins and this is one of the big games, we play at home against a great team like Fenerbahce. They are a big and solid team, with potential points from Dixon, Sloukas, Bogdanovic and Datome and then a lot of inside strength with Vesely, Antic and Udoh. They have been built to compete at the highest level. We didn't have a good game in Istanbul and we never felt we could fight for the win. We will have to play a serious game and play with energy to compete. Rudy won't be around due to his back problems, Thompkins has a problem in his hand and right now we don't feel very optimistic regarding this game. Llull practiced with all precautions so that his condition doesn't get any worse. This is the team that must take that step forward. I think Real Madrid is ready to face these situations and games. I am sure we will give it our all on the court and that gets you calm. I also expect a great atmosphere at the arena."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Fenerbahce Istanbul
"It would be wrong to take a look at the standings and take this game for granted just because Real Madrid is last in our group at the moment. But they have all our respect because they are the defending champions, they are a great team and I am sure that it will be a difficult game for us."

Players

RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"For several reasons we didn't do what we were supposed to. We lost more games than we won and we're in a tough situation. We are focused and ready to play this game. The finals get to us early this season but we like to play this kind of game. We know what we are facing and we are ready. Every absence is difficult for us but we know that injuries happen all the time. We will have to try to make up for Rudy missing to win this game. We play at home and we know the atmosphere that can be generated there. We have our fans' support and that gives us confidence."
DATOME, LUIGI
Fenerbahce Istanbul
"It is an important game for us. Real Madrid have to win all games to make the last Top 16, but we want to win to keep building our winning mentality, we want to win every game. This will be a good test for us. Sure, they lost to more teams than anyone expected, but they are still the champions. They are a good team so we want to go there and do our game like we did when we last played them at home."

Llull, Ayon lead champs past Fenerbahce

Real Madrid improved its chances to make it to the Top 16 from Group A by downing Fenerbahce Istabul 80-73 in the Spanish capital in front of over 10,000 fans at Barclaycard Center on Thursday. Madrid improved to 3-5 and faces a must-win game against FC Bayern Munich next week. Fenerbahce, which qualified for the Top 16 last week, dropped to 6-2 and stays first in Group A. Sergio Llull had all of his 17 points in the final 16 minutes to lead the winners. Gustavo Ayon added 15 and Felipe Reyes had 13 for Madrid. Jan Vesely led Fenerbahce with 20 points and Bobby Dixon added 15. Vesely and Luigi Datome shined early to give Fenerbahce a 16-28 lead late in the first quarter. Youngsters Luka Doncic and Willy Hernangomez fueled a 14-0 run, which Jaycee Carroll capped with a three-pointer that gave Madrid a 32-28 lead. Dixon and Vesely allowed Fenerbahce to regain the lead, 36-45, at halftime. Ayon took over after the break and got help from Llull to help Madrid get the lead, 56-55, through three quarters. A three-pointer by Dixon tied it at 66-66, but Jeffery Taylor, Llull and Ayon fueled a 10-0 run that sealed the outcome down the stretch.

First quarter: Fenerbahce, Datome roll

Dixon needed just 9 second to strike from downtown and Vesely split free throws for a 0-4 Fenerbahce lead. Reyes quickly stepped up with a put-back layup-plus-foul, which Nikola Kalinic erased with a triple that hit the rim, went up and fell down. Ayon shined with a backdoor layup that Vesely erased with a close basket to keep the guests ahead, 5-9. Sergio Rodriguez fed Ayon for an alley-oop dunk and added an acrobatic basket that tied it at 9-9. Datome stepped up with a three-pointer and erased Reyes's basket with a one-handed dunk. After Reyes sank free throws, Vesely answered with a three-point play and a step-back jumper by Datome boosted the guests' lead to 13-19. Pero Antic struck from downtown and free throws by Bogdanovic made it a double-digit game, 13-24. Carroll downed his trademark triple off a screen, but free throws by Bogdan Bogdanovic and a one-handed jumper by Datome gave the guests a 16-28 lead, which a dunk by Taylor cut to 18-28 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Madrid bounces back, Fener reacts

Willy Hernangomez dunked early in the quarter and free throws by Luka Doncic brought Madrid to 22-28. A block by Andres Nocioni allowed Doncic to shine with a driving layup, bringing Los Blancos within 4. An unstoppable Hernangomez ignited the crowd with a dunk and a three-pointer by Nocioni completed the hosts' comeback at 29-28. Fenerbahce could not find the way to the basket and Carroll swished a corner triple to cap a 14-0 run, which prompted the visitors to call timeout at 32-28. Antic scored around the basket and a baseline jumper by Dixon tied it at 32-32. Bogdanovic made free throws and another jumper by Dixon gave the guests fresh air, 32-37, after a 0-9 run. Doncic and Reyes made free throws but so did Vesely and Dixon. Vesely split foul shots twice and added a huge alley-oop dunk to give Fenerbahce a 36-45 edge at halftime.

Third quarter: Ayon puts Madrid in charge

Ayon scored down low immediately after the break, as Madrid held Fenerbahce scoreless for more than two minutes. Ayon kept pushing Madrid with a driving layup, which Omer Yurtseven matched with a jump hook. Rodriguez took over with a bomb from downtown, but Kostas Sloukas quickly answered with a driving layup in transition and soon split free throws for a 43-50 Fenerbahce lead. Llull, who had been scoreless until this point, nailed a three-pointer and followed that with free throws to keep Los Blancos within 48-50. Yurtseven dunked and a three-pointer by Sloukas kept Fenerbahce out of trouble, 48-55. Ayon split foul shots and consecutive layups by Reyes made it a 2-point game. Fenerbahce kept missing shots and an outstanding Ayon put Madrid back ahead, 56-55, at the end of the quarter.

Fourth quarter: Champs shine in crunch time

Llull buried another one from beyond the arc early in the fourth. A block by Ayon allowed Taylor to get a tip-in at the other end that brought the crowd to its feet at 61-55. Vesely, on court with 4 fouls, scored around the basket, but Llull answered with a driving layup. Sloukas shined with a driving layup and Kalinic added free throws that made it 63-61. Llull sank another triple, Vesely dunked again and a three-pointer by Dixon tied it at 66-66 with less than six minutes left. Carroll buried a baseline jumper and free throws by Rodriguez gave Madrid a 70-66 lead. Ayon shined with a wild put-back basket, which caused Fenerbahce to call timeout at 72-66 with over three minutes to go. The guests struggled to score when it mattered most and Ayon split free throws for a 73-66 Madrid lead. A three-pointer by Taylor sealed the outcome, as over 10,000 Madrid fans celebrated a very important win.

Head Coaches

LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"It is a day to CONGRATULATE my team with capital letters. Fenerbahce tried to open our defense in the first quarter and hurt us with its second-chance points. We started to have more energy from that moment and understood the game better. It was a very difficult game and we tried to look for situations in which Fenerbahce felt uncomfortable. We managed to circulate the ball well and get this vital win. I was not nervous before the game, because I saw my players focused, knowing what they had to go. Playing with heart was important tonight. It is an important win and I see my team is better than some weeks ago. We kept our chances to make it to the Top 16 even though we have injuries - Andres Nocioni's injury does not look good right now. I don't discard the possibility of looking for players in the market. We lost Chapu [Andres Nocioni] during the game to a shoulder injury and were a bit limited, but the team showed great heart, winning a difficult game against a great team. We were able to come back, play good basketball and work hard to get that win. My back hurts - there must be something that is affecting all of us, because we are not having luck with injuries! But I am very happy with this win."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Fenerbahce Istanbul
"I tried to change things during the game to correct mistakes and bad situations. It was a very similar game to the one played in Istanbul. Real Madrid took a lot of three-point shots and their shooting percentage was similar to the one it had in Istanbul. What was different is that we were not that inspired on offense. We didn't have a good offense and came in with just two big men. Experience and playing in a different atmosphere could have had an impact tonight. We lost, but it is not a problem. Real Madrid had a strong start and there were two different stages in this game. Turnovers hurt us a lot - we cannot have 14 turnovers and just 2 steals. A lot of turnovers were in one-on-one situations, which is not allowed in high-level basketball."

Players

RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"It was a very difficult game. We were without Rudy Fernandez and Trey Thompkins, but also lost Chapu [Andres Nocioni] during the game. We managed to win it and now have another two finals ahead of us. Defense is really important for us. It allowed us to get a lot of advantages in transition. We powered the defensive boards and blocked shots. We must keep working and think about the next game."
LLULL, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"You can never jump off the boat, and especially not in games like this. I am always going to give my best and in the end, I managed to hit shots, something I didn't do in the first half, and helped my team. The most important thing is that we won and stayed alive. I want to thank our fans for their support. We needed them, because if our arena is packed, all bad moments in the game are not that bad. It is easier to win with their support. Every game is like a final and we are used to playing big games. If we lose, we go home and now we have a tough game against Bayern Munich, which is also fighting to qualify. We will try to prepare for it well and win it. Defense allowed us to have a successful year and we are missing that sometimes this season. When we play defense together, everything is easier on offense."
DATOME, LUIGI
Fenerbahce Istanbul
"We tried to give our best in this game and have a strong start, because we played against an opponent ready to compete, because it was a must-win one for them. We will try to keep getting wins in the regular season to make it to the Top 16 with a winning mentality."
