THE TAKE

Panellinios hosts SLUC Nancy in an important Group G battle with major implications on the Last 16 hunt. The winner of this game advances to the Last 16, while the loser must run to the nearest television to see the outcome of the PGE Tuow-Gran Canaria game, needing Granca to lose to have a chance of advancing. Both Panellinios and Nancy enter Week 6 with 3-2 records. For Panellinios, the situation is simple: Beat Nancy and win Group G. Lose to Nancy and Gran Canaria loses, finish second. Lose to Nancy and Granca wins, finish third. For Nancy, the math is more complicated. To win the group, it must beat Panellinios and have Gran Canaria lose or have its margin of victory be at least 10 points more than Granca’s margin of victory. Nancy finishes second if it wins and so does Gran Canaria, but the margin of victory for Nancy is not at least 10 greater than Granca’s or if Nancy loses, Gran Canaria loses and Nancy’s margin of defeat is 10 points or less than Gran Canaria’s margin of defeat. The mathematical equations that could decide their fates will not trouble the players on the floor, who will be focused on one thing – Victory. Devin Smith scored 21 and Rod Blakney dished 7 assists to lead Panellinios to a 72-81 road win at Nancy when they met last month. Head coach Elias Zouros will hope for similar production this time from his backcourt, which also features Manolis Papamakarios, Kostas Charalampidis and Georgios Kalaitzis. Nancy counters with Steed Tchicamboud, Jeff Greer and John Cox. Nancy’s star is small forward Ricardo Greer, who could match up with Smith in a crucial duel. Panellinios power forward Britton Johnsen, who played alongside Ricardo Greer for Pau-Orthez in the Euroleague in the 2006-07 season, could have some advice for his teammates to stop the Nancy leader. Meanwhile the visitors boast a deep and aggressive frontcourt with shot-blocker extraordinaires Akin Akinbala and Marcus Slaughter joining forces with mobile power forward Stephen Brun. Johnsen joins Ian Vougiouskas. Panellinios has a significant depth advantage with 10 regulars who play at least 13 minutes per game. Nancy is a more athletic team and one of the best in the competition on the offensive glass. That could be a major factor down the stretch, seeing if Nancy will still be fresh and active in the fourth quarter of a close game.

ZOUROS, ILIAS
Panellinios Opap
"The game against SLUC Nancy will be very difficult. Every time you have a game against a French team, which has many American players, you have to be careful. We have to be concentrated especially on defense. The game is very important for us."

"It’s a very difficult game for the qualification to the next round of the Eurocup. It is very positive for us that the game will be played at home. SLUC Nancy has a very strong team and it’s level is similar to a Euroleague team. The first result in France will not judge the game. It’s a final for both teams."
Joshua Davis - Panellinios BCPanellinios reached the Last 16 as the Group G champion by knocking off Sluc Nancy 77-64 in a make-or-break showdown at home on Tuesday. Both teams were in a winner-take-all situation but Panellinios ended up being first with a 4-2 record due to its tie-break advantage against Gran Canaria 2014. It now joins Last 16 Group K along with Bizkaia Bilbao Basket, Benetton Gioco Digitale and Brose Baskets. Nancy was third at 3-3 and would have won Group G with a win. Josh Davis led the winners with 28 points - 23 of them after the break. Kostas Chalarampidis added 12 while Ian Vougioukas had 10 for Panellinios. Stephen Brun had 14 points for Nancy while Ricardo Greer added 13. Nancy overcame an early 12-point deficit to get a 48-50 edge after 30 minutes. A three-pointer by John Cox tied the game, 62-62, with 4 minutes left. Davis led a final 15-2 run that allowed Panellinios to stay alive in the competition and win its regular season group.

Steed Tchicamboud got Nancy going with a three-pointer. Giorgios Kalaitzis quickly answered from downtown, igniting an 11-3 run that Devin Smith capped with a layup a mid-range jumper. Nancy called timeout and found a go-to guy in Akin Akingbala, that had 6 unanswered points to bring the guests back to life, 11-9. Jeff Greer soon followed a jumper with a dunk to tie it at 13-13. A layup by Davis and a big triple by Rod Blakney allowed Panellinios to get a four-point lead, 18-14, after 10 minutes. Blakney sank another three-pointer early in the second quarter and Smith copied him to make it a double-digit game, 24-14. Smith capped a 13-1 run with a layup, as a triple by Brun and free throws by Marcus Slaughter brought Nancy back to life, 26-19. Brun kept pacing Nancy with back-to-back jumpers and Cox followed a three-point play with foul shots to keep the guests as close as 29-28. Three-pointers by Jeff Greer and an unstoppable Brun completed the guests' comeback, 33-34. Free throws by Britton Johnsen, however, put Panellinios back ahead, 35-34, at halftime.

Davis downed a three-pointer immediately after the break but another jumper by a red hot Brun and a layup by Tchicamboud tied it at 38-38. Davis kept pacing Panellinios with a jumper that Ricardo Greer bettered with a layup-plus-foul to put Nancy ahead, 40-41. Davis followed a layup with foul shot but Ricardo Greer kept Nancy within 44-43. Chalarampidis found his first points on a layup but Slaughter followed an easy basket with a dunk to provide another lead change, 46-47. Ricardo Greer buried a triple but free throws by Charalampidis brought Panellinios within 48-50 after 30 minutes. Davis struck from downtown early in the fourth quarter but Ricardo Greer gave Nancy its last lead at 51-52. Charalampidis followed free throws with a triple and Blakney soon added a jumper but Ricardo Greer kept Nancy in the game, 58-56. Davis stayed on fire but free throws but Slaughter and a triple by Cox tied it at 62-62. Kalaitzis buried the go-ahead three-pointer, igniting a 15-2 final run in which Charalampidis and Davis also struck from downtown to make all Panellinios fans celebrate a critical home win in style.

Head Coaches

ZOUROS, ILIAS
Panellinios Opap
"First of all, I want to congratulate my players and collaborators. We did a good job. We all knew this game would be tough because Nancy is a great team. We reache dour first goal and managed to sneak into the Last 16."
MONSCHAU, JEAN-LUC
SLUC Nancy
"I want to congratulate Panellinios for their qualification and especially coach Zouros for the success. I really think we lost this qualification in France. We had a last chance tonight but Panellinios did their job. It was a very difficult game for us."

Players

DAVIS, JOSHUA
Panellinios Opap
"The game was very difficult. Both teams wanted this win in order to make the Last 16. SLUC Nancy is a very good team, but we played organized in defense, especially in the last period. We are happy for this qualification. It's a big success for the club and the team."
BRUN, STEPHEN
SLUC Nancy
"We did not expect a loss in here, because we came to Greece to win. We did all we could but they prevailed. Panellinios was a very strong team in the second half."
