THE TAKE

Asvel Basket returns home poised to push towards the elimination round as it hosts Group G co-leader Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas. Coach Yves Baratet's French side committed 20 turnovers and shot just 42% from the field in dropping to 2-2 with a road loss against ASCO Slask Wroclaw. Power forward Lamayne Wilson (18 points and 10 rebounds) and center Uchenna Nsomwu (10 points and 10 rebounds) each notched a double-double and reserve power forward Chevon Troutman collected 19 points and six rebounds. But the rest of the Asvel team scored just 18 points. Baratet could not be happy with that showing and it would not be a surprise if the rest of the players come out on a mission to provide more support. One very bright point for Asvel is that it has played three of its first four games on the road and already won two matches away from home. And Baratet's team plays four of its next five at home. With Group G still plenty up for grabs, Asvel fans can be happy with their team's current standing. Spanish side Gran Canaria improved to 3-1 by beating Panionios at home for its third straight victory. Things are not all rosy for coach Salvador Maldonado's team. Shooting guard Carl English scored 21 points but the rest of the starting five tallied only 16 points combined. And Maldonado's reserves scored 45 points. This is nothing new for Maldonado. Through the first four games, the starting five has combined for 40.2 points - but just 23.2 if you take away English's average of 17.0 ppg. And the Gran Canaria bench has averaged 38.2 points a game. With a three-game winning streak coming into the game at Asvel, it would be tough to argue to Maldonado that he should anything.

Robert Conley - Asvel Basket Asvel Basket used 22 points and 6 rebounds from Lamayne Wilson to beat visiting Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 94-86 on Tuesday at Astroballe in Villeurbanne, France. With the victory, Asvel climbed to a positive 3-2 record and now shares second place in the Group G table with Gran Canaria and BC Kalev/Cramo. Robert Conley bagged 17 points, Uchenna Nsonwu nailed 16 points with 4 assists, and Chevon Troutman added 14 for the winners. Carl English led Gran Canaria with 22 points, Chris Massie tallied 13 with 7 rebounds, while Roberto Guerra and Marcus Norris added 10 apiece.

Carl English - Gran Canaria Grupo DunasMassie scored in the paint gave a 6-10 slim advantage to Gran Canaria to start the match. Then, in a perfect run-and-gun style, Wilson and Jeff Varem fueled Asvel to finish the first quarter ahead 32-22. Despite Guerra and Jim Moran trying to push the visitors back with mid-range shooting, Asvel maintained consistent margins to stay ahead by 48-35 with easy points from Uchenna Nsomwu. Guerra remained on fire, however, to cut the cushion with consecutive buckets at halftime to 53-45. English helped Gran Canaria to stay alive and get within 66-57 at the midway point of the third quarter, before Troutman from the foul line and Wilson from downtown gave Asvel another double-figure cushion, 77-67, after 30 minutes. A free throw by Guerra reduced the difference to 83-78 with 5 minutes left in the match, but C onley extended the margin again to 87-78. After the last attempts by English and Sergio Perez to keep Gran Canaria in striking distance at 91-86 with a minute to go, Wilson sealed the win for Asvel.

Head Coaches

BARATET, YVES
Asvel Basket
"Games like tonight's are about details. The team needed to adapt to their zone defense. We found the resources and also shot our free throws at 89% success. We are still far from qualification for the next round. We stilll have five matches to play. Wroclaw moved to first this evening and four teams are within a point. Nothing is settled."

Players

SANGARE, YOHANN
Asvel Basket
"We faced a very good team from Gran Canaria. We played a complete game. They closed the score at the end thanks to their shooters. And we had periods without a real leader on the floor. The absence of Aymeric is felt in our passing game against the zone. It is necessary to keep a cool head and to shoot well outside."
