THE TAKE

Deutsche Bank Skyliners is finally healthy but it's too late for the winless side which hosts Group D co-leader Khimki. Coach Murat Didin's Skyliners dropped to 0-7 with a convincing loss at Anwil Wloclawek. Deutsche Bank allowed Anwil to shoot 52% from the field and forced just 11 turnovers while handing the ball over 14 times. But Didin's German team has finally gotten its starters back as point guard Pascal Roller, shooting guard Jimmy McKinney and small forward Koko Archibong will play together for the first time in the ULEB Cup. Roller was still out in Skyliners's loss against Anwil but McKinney scored 13 points to help star power forward Derrick Allen, who had 21 points and 8 rebounds. With the ULEB Cup season over but for three meaningless games, Didin will be looking to get his troops in form and could be cause for concern for Khimki. Coach Kestutis Kemzura's Khimki lost its first game in the ULEB Cup in overtime against Azovmash Mariupol to drop to 6-1 in a tie for first place with Pamesa. Khimki out-rebounded Azovmash 44-35 and committed just 8 turnovers, but the Russian team shot just 38% from the field while allowing Azovmash to hit 52% for the game. Shooting guard Teemu Rannikko led Khimki with 23 points while guard Anton Ponkrashov (17 points) power forward Mike Wilkinson (16 points and 9 rebounds) and shooting guard Vitaly Fridzon (16 points) all scored in double figures. But it was not enough as Kemzura's team made just 8-of-27 three-pointers (30%). Khimki may be already secured a spot in the next round, but Kemzura's troops hope to get back on the winning track with a showdown coming in Week 10 at Valencia.

Kelly McCarty - Khimki Khimki Moscow gained a hard-fought 67-72 victory on the road in their quest for the first place in Group D as they downed the winless Deutsche Bank Skyliners in Ballsporthalle, Frankfurt on Tuesday. Neither team managed to set itself apart until the last quarter, when Khimki (7-1)showed more concentration while the Skyliners had several players in major foul trouble. Kelly McCarty led a collective team effort by Khimki with 18 points and Mike Wilkinson joined him as the only other double-digit scorer with 10 points for his team. The Skyliners won the rebounding battle 43-25 but this effort was futile as they went just 3 for 20 from behind the arc. Derrick Allen led everybody with 31 points and 11 rebounds, while Jimmy McKinney added 13 points.

Both teams started hot, converting most of their possessions, not hesitating to play at a quick pace to a 10-11 score. When the defenses intensified, Frankfurt went on a 6-0 run that prompted Khimki head coach Kestutis Kemzura to take the first timeout but it didn't prevent Frankfurt from staying ahead 21-15 after 10 minutes. The second quarter continued on a defensive note as the home team maintained a slim margin, but head coach Murat Didin took a timeout after a three-pointer by Anton Ponkrashov pulled Khimki within 3 points at 26-23. The lackluster offensive performance of both teams continued as Khimki seized the lead by 30-31 late in the quarter before the half ended with a 33-33 tie. The third quarter featured a better star for Khimki but the Skyliners hung tough and held a 41-40 lead on Allen’s jump shot. From then on, however, Khimki stayed a step ahead as Macej Lampe as well as Vitaly Fridzon managed to hit important three-pointers to put their team up 50-53 after 30 minutes. Ponkrashov assisted Wilkinson for yet another three-pointer to start the last quarter but both teams struggled to score for the next 2 minutes, until Frankfurt's Dominique Bahiense de Mello drove for a layup. Lampe and McCarty scored consecutive baskets to push Khimki's lead to 8 points, 54-62 with 5 minutes left to. This proved to be enough for the visitors to score yet another victory as both teams were trading baskets the rest of the way.

Head Coaches

DIDIN, MURAT
D. Bank Skyliners
"I want to thank my players for their efforts, believing they can beat Khimki. Maybe we lacked a little luck today, who knows? Our three-point shooting was very bad and has cost us the game. I wish Khimki good luck for the rest of the way this season."
KEMZURA, KESTUTIS
Khimki
"After a bad loss in the last game, we lost our position a little bit against Pamesa Valencia in our challenge for the first place in the group. For the Skyliners, many of their most important players came back and they wanted to beat us. They made some tough shots despite us playing good defense. We stayed with our game plan and didn't let them run away with the lead early. We started the third quarter on a better foot, played more concentrated on both ends of the floor. It was more or less an even game with us being just a bit better in some situations. Derrick Allen played a great game, he was just unstoppable. Generally, I think we did a good job on Pascal Roller, limiting him under his average."
