THE TAKE

Strasbourg hopes to remain in the running for the elimination round as its hosts Group I leader PGE Turów Zgorzelec. Coach Eric Girard's Strasbourg was dominated in every phase of the game in losing at Unics Kazan to fall to 3-4. Strasbourg was out-shot 41%-52%, lost the rebound battle 25-35 and committed 22 turnovers. No starter scored more than 9 points with reserve guard Afik Nissim the only player in double figures with 12 points. Girard would like to quickly forget the loss and move onto Turów, which won easily at home in Week Three by holding Strasbourg to just 35% and forcing 18 turnovers. PGE Turów Zgorzelec coach Saso Filipovski would like to see a repeat of that defensive showing and can clinch a spot in the next round with a road victory. The Polish team notched its fifth straight win and improved to 6-1 with a two-game lead in Group I by beating Zadar in overtime. Filipovski's team shot just 43% from the floor but held Zadar to 48% and forced 17 turnovers while handing the ball over just 13 times. Small forward Thomas Kelati led five starters in double figures with 19 points while power forward Dragisa Drobjnak collected 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals. Filipovski has to be alarmed that his team only scored five points in the fourth quarter but pleased at the same time since it was able to capture the victory.

Thomas Kelati - PGE Turow PGE Turow is the first team to qualify to the elimination rounds of the ULEB Cup as on Tuesday night it survived Strasbourg on the road by 61-64. On the year of its ULEB Cup debut, Turow qualifies from Group I with a 7-1 record while Strasbourg drops now to 3-5. The game was really tight throughout the 40 minutes even though the hosts reached the last minutes with a 56-49. However, a 5-15 run in the last moments y Turow allowed them to claim a much desired win thanks to a game-winning shot by Kelati, who led the winners with 22 points. David Logan also had 13 for Turow. Afik NIssim led the losers with 13 points while Aaron Pettway and Sacha Giffa had 10 apiece.

A starting 0-4 put Turow in command, and despite the blows by Strasbourg, two straight triples by Thomas Kelati allowed the guests to go for the 7-12. However, a three-point play by Aaron Pettway managed to tie the game at 12-12 as defenses didn't allow easy points now. Kelati was still the savior for Turow in offense but it was a basket by Slobodan Ljubotina which put an end to the first quarter with a 14-17 Turow edge. Things turned over when the second quarter started as a 12-2 Strasbourg run capped by Derrick Obasohan's triple made it 26-19. Harding Nana broke the spell for Turow but the hosts kept on firing baskets as Sacha Giffa hit a new three for 31-21. David Logan seemed to maintain Turow alive with 5 straight points that left a 35-29 at the break. The third quarter started with Turow back to work as Logan kept scoring from the arc, but Strasbourg regrouped in defense to maintain a slim margin. Five straight points by Afik Nissim gave back the confidence to the hosts who soared again to a 51-43 advantage in minute 30. Turow, knowing that it would advance with a win, stepped on the gas with a 0-5 to start the decisive period with Iwo Kitzinger's three. Obasohan soon put Strasbourg in safe place again with his basket, 56-49 in minute 34, but Kelati and Logan new threes soon made it a 2-point game, 61-59 with two minutes to go. With 61-61 on the scoreboard and the last seconds to go, Kelati found the space for an open shot beyond the arc that went in to put Turow in the elimination rounds the year of its ULEB Cup debut.

Head Coaches

GIRARD, ERIC
Strasbourg
"I have no regrets. The players were all extraordinary, I cannot blame anyone. My players were brave all game, we shall not forget that we lost big in the first game. The last shot made the decision. We are going to fight for the last two games of the group, because we still have a small chance to advance."
FILIPOVSKI, SASO
PGE Turów Zgorzelec
"I am happy for this win, because we worked hard, we didn't have a break actually. Although, today, we didn't play good, we were sleepy and not enough aggressive on defense. Strasbourg played well, they had a good shot selection. But we showed character, we showed at the end of the game that we wanted to win. We were lucky though."

Players

GIFFA, SANYA
Strasbourg
"We fought well, we didn't want to give up easily. We lost, but we played aggressively. It was very close, and it was a very good game, even though we weren't lucky at the end."
KELATI, THOMAS
PGE Turów Zgorzelec
"It was a tough game, with two good teams. We were asleep in the first half, we didn't play defense. Fortunately, we woke up after halftime, David Logan and I hit big threes. For the last shot, I give all credits to the point guard, who set me up perfectly."
