THE TAKE

Spirou Basket Charleroi will try to end its Eurocup season on a winning note when its hosts Turk Telekom on Tuesday. Spirou has yet to win in the Eurocup this season, but may not be as desperate for its first win as Telekom is for its third. That’s because Telekom will advance to the Last 16 if it wins and Spartak St. Petersburg loses to undefeated Group E leader Bizkaia Bilbao Basket in Tuesday’s other group game. Spirou’s season started in a promising way when it edged Entente Orleanaise in the opening game of the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, but after falling in the second leg at Orleans, it’s been all downhill. Telekom experienced some of that by whipping Charleroi 91-67 last month behind 25 points from Lamayne Wilson and 24 from Bekir Yarangume. Dwayne Broyles led Spirou with 19 that night. Broyles is one of the most important players for the hosts to have step up if they are to finally win in the Eurocup. The small forward teams with guard Jonathan Tabu and power forward Wes Wilkinson in a balanced lineup that is stronger now that Jerry Johnson and Chris Hill have returned from injuries. Head coach Giovanni Bozi was able to use 10 different players for at least 14 minutes last week and may do the same against Telekom. The visitors have more defined roles, with Wilson the scorer, Ersin Dudley the rebounder and inside presence and Tutku Acik the playmaker. Demond Mallet and Serkan Erdogan join Acik in the backcourt to challenge Johnson, Tabu and co., while Wilson matches up with Wilkinson in a crucial battle. At the pivot, Dudley and Huseyin Besok will take on defensive stalwart Andre Riddick. Telekom is the favorite this time because of what is riding on the game, however Spirou can be counted on to give 100%, especially now that it has a deeper rotation and can show what could have been.

Quotes Head Coaches

CAKIROGLU, MERIH
Turk Telekom
"We will be playing on the road but that will not make us stay less focused. I think that if we work the way we know, we can pull a win from this trip to Belgium. However, we will have to be waiting for news from Russia to see if Bilbao Basket can take the win. I think it's hard for us to get into the Last 16 at this point."

Players

Demond Mallet - Turk telekomTurk Telekom had to wait longest, but in the end roared into the Last 16 on the strength of its 61-74 road win at Spirou Basket on Tuesday. Turk Telekom tied 3-3 for second place with Spartak St. Petersburg but enjoyed a head-to-head tiebreak advantage between them. Spartak lost in overtime to undefeated group winner Bilbao Basket in the last game to finish of the regular season. Somewhere in Charleroi, Belgium, a cheer went up at that moment. Turk Telekom had made sure of its end of things by racing in front of Spirou and never looking back the rest of the night. Demond Mallett paced the winners with 24 points, including 6-for-10 three-point shooting. Erwin Dudley followed with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Bekir Yarangume played all 40 minutes, scoring 13 points and pulling 8 rebounds. For Spirou, a winless 0-6 season ended with Jonathan Tabu scoring 18 points and Chris Hill 13.

Turk Telekom showed it meant business and for all intents won the game with a 0-14 blast after tipoff. Tutku Acik started it with a three-pointer, Kris Lang added a pair of baskets, then Mallet and Dudley finished off the run. Hill finally broke the ice for Spirou with a triple, then promptly hit free throws and another shot from downtown for his own 8-0 run. But 8-14 was as close as Spirou got as Yarangume and Mallet bookended a new 0-10 run with triples as Turk Telekom went up 13-24 after one quarter. Dudley inside and Mallet from deep quickly boosted the difference to 15 points, 13-29, to open the second quarter. There was no stopping Turk Telekom as Yarangume tried to make it a 20-point game, coming within a point of doing so twice as the first half ended 23-42.

Huseyin Besok's layup to start the third quarter achieved the mark of 20, at 23-44, and although Spirou reacted some then, his triple maintained it at 29-49. Tabu and Andre Riddick trimmed the difference to 37-52 for Charleroi, which got late third-quarter layups from Jure Lalic to make it a tad closer, 44-58, after 30 minutes. When Spirou threatened to get within single digits early in the final quarter, when Tabu's layup made it 49-60, Yarangume and Mallet scored the next 5 points. Mallet continued with 5 in a row of his own to make it 54-70 with 5 minutes left, which effectively shifted the visitors' gaze to St. Petersburg, where some time later overtime ended in a way that allowed Turk Telekom to make it to the Last 16.

Head Coaches

BOZZI, GIOVANNI
Spirou Basket
"We had too many injured players during this competition. Our start was bad, against Bilbao and in Ankara. We lost confidence game after game. I am happy with our reaction in the second half tonight. Now we are focused on the Belgian League where we have a lot of ambitions."
LANG, KRIS
Turk Telekom
"I'm very excited. Our game here was easy, but it was a very tough game in St Petersburg. We qualified and I think it's logical. I hope we'll be competitive in the next round."
