THE TAKE

With time running out on its Top 16 hopes, Virtus VidiVici Bologna hosts Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday needing a win to remain in the Group A picture. Virtus has fallen on hard times so far this season, losing its last three by an average of 20.7 points as it dropped to 2-7 in the group standings. Moreover, two starters, Delonte Holland and Federico Lestini, were released from the club for disciplinary reasons. However the pride of head coach Stefano Pillastrini and the of the rest of the squad, which lost 104-76 in Greece against the Reds in November, will see the team give its best effort this time around, especially at home, where both of the team’s losses thus far have come. Meanwhile, though injuries have eaten away at Olympiacos’s early season momentum and forward Georgios Printezis doubtful this week, point guard Lynn Greer could make his return. Head coach Pini Gershon will naturally look to star shooting guard Arvydas Macijauskas, forward Qyntel Woods and center Marc Jackson, who combined for 71 points against VidiVici last time. VidiVici’s short roster leaves swingman Dewarick Spencer, point guard Donnie McGrath and power forward Guilherme Giovannoni as its main offensive weapons. The hosts will use veteran Roberto Chiacig and this season’s Euroleague blocked shots leader Andrea Crosariol in the paint to try and keep Jackson from doing damage, while Giovannoni will go against Woods. Perhaps the key head-to-head matchup pits Spencer against Macijauskas, as the hosts know that not only do they need Spencer to step up on the offensive end, but also to keep Macijauskas down to have a shot at the win. Alan Anderson could also play a part against Macijauskas for VidiVici. Together with Greer, Rod Blakney will run the show for head coach Pini Gershon, with McGrath as their main counterpart. Olympiacos is the Euroleague’s top-scoring team this season and it will continue to subscribe to a high-paced gameplan this week. That could suit some of the VidiVici players just fine, but the visitors’ depth could wind up making the difference, as the will of an outmanned Bologna can only go so far. Nevertheless, if Spencer and Anderson can get hot and Crosariol can stop Jackson, there is hope for a VidiVici upset.

Quotes Head Coaches

PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
"Right now we are going haywire. We cannot even prepare for our next game against Olympiacos because we have a lot of injuries and we are practicing with only nine players, including juniors. I would say we are going to face Olympiacos with the goal of limiting the damage. We lost clearly in Rome, but with our current roster and shape we cannot compete in so many games in so few days. Anyway I am optimistic, because in Rome we struggled because of our naïve things. I definitely didn’t see my team giving up the game, but only a team that wasn’t able to compete for all the night. So far in Euroleague I just have a big regret – that bad home loss against Prokom Trefl. With that win we would have been in the right situation, even though I don’t know if it could be enough to compete for the qualification. In such a tough group, we couldn’t aim too high. However, right now we have too many problems and it’s very difficult to focus ourselves on both competitions."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"It is the first game in 2008 and definitely we want to start the new year exactly how we finished the previous one. We want to win. We have many absences and problems, but our opponents have to compete under the same situation. We want to win our first game on the road, because it would be very important for the future. I just want to wish everybody happy new year with health and great love for basketball."

"It's my first experience in the Euroleague and I think it's very good so far. I really like to play at the highest level, in a competition with the best teams in Europe. It's very exciting for me. It’s a pity we have lost many games. I think we have a very very talented team. We just need to put all the pieces together to start winning. We definitely have all the tools to compete at high-level both in the Italian League and the Euroleague. Now in the Euroleague we’re down of a lot of wins, so all that we can do now it’s trying to figure it game by game, try to get better day by day and see what happens at the end. Olympiacos is another great team on our way. I have seen them a couple of times on TV. I didn’t play the first-leg game because I wasn’t here yet. I think we will be ready for them. We just have to focus on ourselves, making sure to do everything we want to do and making them adjust to us."
GREER, LYNN
Olympiacos
"I feel great to return back to action and be able to help my team in a very difficult game. My teammates did a fine job so far and we have to continue like this. Like all road games, this one in Italy has its own difficulties. We haven't managed to win on the road yet and I believe we have to start doing it. My wish for 2008 is that my teammates and I will not suffer any more injuries. We've been through enough since now."
Lynn Greer - Olympiacos Olympiacos Piraeus topped Virtus VidiVici Bologna 80-91 on Thursday at the PalaMalaguti for the Reds first road win of the season. Olympiacos point guard Lynn Greer came off the bench for his first appearance in over a month for 23 points and 6 assists to lead the visitors, who improved to 6-4 and now share third place in Group A with Montepaschi Siena and Zalgiris Kaunas. Meanwhile Virtus dropped its fourth straight to fall to 2-8 and see its chances of reaching the Top 16 all but disappear. The hosts gave their young players the chance to shine this week, with three 18-year-olds seeing significant minutes, including point guard Stevan Stojkov, who started and scored 10 points and dished 7 assists in just his second Euroleague appearance, and Jean Canelo, who scored 11 of the bench. Despite the VidiVici youth, the home team was within 9 points early in the fourth quarter, however the Reds defense clamped down when it mattered to hold on for the win. Qyntel Woods finished with 17 points for Olympiacos, Marc Jackson added 16 points and 10 rebounds, Arvydas Macijauskas scored a season-low 10 and Jake Tsakalidis had 10 for the second game in a row. Dewarick Spencer scored 17 to lead Virtus and Donnie McGrath added 10.

Woods and Macijauskas combined for a 0-6 start for Olympiacos with a spectacular alley-oop on the fastbreak amongst the points. Guilherme Giovannoni made a three to launch Bologna’s night. When Matteo Da Ros entered the fray, the host had two 18 year-olds on the court and still managed to resist Olympiacos for a while. Stojkov added a three to his runner to bring his team within 1, but Macijauskas kept running and feeding his men well. Luca Garri and McGrath combined for a 7-0 spurt. That’s when Woods fiercely dunked twice, the first strolling through Bologna’s defense and the second on the break after he stole the ball off Canelo, yet another 18 year-old to get into the action for the hosts. The score stood tied at 18, but Olympiacos soon took charge, exploiting the Bologna defense in the last two minutes to end the first quarter with a Milos Teodosic bomb and a 20-25 lead.

Donnie Mc Grath - Virtus VidiViciGreer opened the second quarter with a fade-away jumper, but Canelo responded by putting back his own miss. Garri sank a desperate three, but Olympiacos’s offense looked a lot more fluid with Greer doing just about what he wanted on the court, dishing for a Tsakalidis dunk and scoring from mid-range to keep a 5-point edge. The guests got sloppy and Bologna took full advantage with Stojkov bringing his team within 1 with another three. Loukas Mavrokefalides got Olympiacos back on track before Spencer’s alley-oop responded to Woods’s two-handed jam. The Reds quickly took a 7-point advantage, which Teodosic turned into 10 as the visitors started their run-and-gun game again. Canelo scored, but Macijauskas stole and scored under the basket to give Olympiacos a 40-50 lead at halftime.

Olympiacos was dominant on the offensive glass in the early going, getting second and third opportunities and, just like in the first half, they got off to a 6-0 start. Virtus reacted with Spencer from the line and Garri off a volleyball-like pass from Stojkov. Jakson, rather quiet thus far, made a two-plus-one play after taking the rebound before Greer added a game-breaking three which forced VidiVici head coach Stefano Pillastrini to use a timeout at 47-64 midway through the third quarter. Canelo trimmed the difference to 14 points before stripping Greer off the ball. When Spencer went to the bench, Bologna struggled to find the basket, while Olympiacos was controlling the game, 55-69. Canelo somehow got rid of the defensive pressure to score the last basket, reducing the gap to 59-71 heading into the fourth quarter.

Bologna had a mountain to climb but started the last 10 minutes and 2 free throws from Andrea Michelori got the hosts within 9. However, Olympiacos’s defense was causing the hosts an awful lot of problems and it’s only thanks to some misfired Greek shots that the score stalled at 75-62. Bologna’s offense was relying too much on Spencer’s creative ability and Olympiacos took the necessary measures. Spencer was constantly and efficiently double and even tripled-teamed, while Bologna’s inside men, Roberto Chiacig and Michelori, failed to score some easy baskets. With 3:24 to the final buzzer, the 13-points gap was intact as Bologna’s hopes were starting to dwindle. A couple of exchanged baskets later and there was only garbage time separating Olympiacos from its first road win in the Euroleague this season.

Head Coaches

PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
"We did what we had to do. It was always going to be difficult. The youngsters did a great job, on offense, they shared the ball and did OK as well on defense."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"What we wanted to do is stop their shooters from getting into the rhythm and the fact that Spencer and McGrath had two early fouls helped us as well. Lynn Greer just came back from 6 or 7 weeks out but he was excellent on offense, and you know what he can do on defense."

Players

GIOVANNONI, GUILHERME
Virtus VidiVici
"The three youngsters are good guys and good players as well. Obviously, it was hard because we played a team that aims for the Final Four and we were a bit short but in the end the important thing is that they showed their talent."
MACIJAUSKAS, ARVYDAS
Olympiacos
"Winning our first away game is an important step for us. We want to go far in this competition and every game is important to win, it does not matter whether in which group you are drawn or against which team you play."
