THE TAKE

A pair of age-old rivals will clash on Thursday when Zalgiris Kaunas hosts CSKA Moscow in a Group A encounter. The two teams have been battling one another for decades, mostly in the old Soviet Union leagues. Despite the rich history between the clubs, this game is all about the present. Zalgiris is one of the hottest teams in Euroleague Basketball at the moment, riding a five-game winning streak as it has improved to 7-4 and a share of second lace in the group. Meanwhile CSKA is 9-2 and sits atop the group standings, knowing that with a win and a Tau Ceramica loss to Union Olimpija, the Russian champs could already clinch first place this week. CSKA is coming off a 71-67 loss at Olympiacos, despite another strong effort from David Andersen. CSKA held on for a 78-70 win the last time these two met back in November in Moscow. The game was tied early in the fourth quarter, but Andersen and Nikos Zisis stepped up when it counted most to help CSKA seal the win. Ramunas Siskauskas led the Russian champs with 19 points. The Lithuanian champs are a different team now, with Marcus Brown re-establishing himself as one of the top scorers around and playmaker DeJuan Collins sharing the league lead in assists. Brown has averaged 21 points on 59.4% three-point shooting during Zalgiris’s winning streak. With Marko Popovic bringing punch off the bench, Zalgiris has a very effective backcourt that will challenge CSKA’s deep guard rotation boasting Euroleague Basketball MVP Theo Papaloukas, J.R. Holden, sharp shooting Trajan Langdon and Zisis. Siskauskas, familiar with many Zalgiris players from the Lithuanian national team, squares off with Jonas Maciulis and Dainius Salenga at small forward. In the paint the battles will see center Eurelijus Zukauskas and forwards Paulius Jankunas and Goran Jurak challenge the CSKA frontline of Andersen, Marcus Goree and Andrey Vorontsevich, the latter of whom has begun to see an increase in minutes due to injuries to Alexey Savrasenko and Matjas Smodis. Zalgiris is undefeated at home this season and has won six straight at the S. Darius and S. Girenas Sports Center, although CSKA may be the toughest hurdle yet. The game may mean more to Zalgiris that CSKA, as it is in the midst of a battle for position in the Top 16, while CSKA is all but assured a top seed. Nevertheless, CSKA has not lost back-to-back Euroleague games in over two years, though it did win the Euroleague title at the end of that season. Expect both teams to be ready for this game, which is important both in the standings and for its historic value.

Quotes Head Coaches

GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"CSKA is one of the most famous basketball clubs in Europe. That team is designed for the highest goals. They have a deep bench and a few strong players for every position. Last week CSKA lost to Olympiacos, but Olympiacos is one of strongest teams in the tournament. I wouldn’t say that CSKA played bad. It’s just the opponents that evening was stronger and came out on top. Comparing to our first match, CSKA will be missing Savrasenko, but David Andersen, in my opinion, is even more dangerous. He is a more universal player, so we will not have any advantage comparing to the first game in Moscow. We still are not sure about Michael Bradley, if he will be able to play. But we are preparing for this game and will do our best to win the game in front of our fans."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"It is a difficult game, we play once again without Savrasenko and Smodis. We used to do so for two months but we are not that fresh as we used to be in the start of that period. We have to find the solution of the problem. Zalgiris plays good basketball this year, especially at the home court and it makes our task even more difficult."

Players

JURAK, GORAN
Zalgiris
"It's good to have five consecutive wins, because now we can play more relaxed. Of course, CSKA is one of the biggest clubs in Europe, with a big budget, but we have to play against them relaxed like we played our last games in the Euroleague. CSKA has lots of players, a lot of shooters as well as guys who can play under the basket, who can rebound well. They have different rotations that all are good. They are great in defense. In the offense, they know how to use their big guys. But this time they will probably play without Savrasenko and Smodis, so they will use small lineup and will play at faster pace and more aggressively. For us it's would be great to have Michael Bradley back. I hope he will be able to play."
Ramunas Siskauskas - CSKA Moscow CSKA Moscow practically clinched first place in Group A and first-level seeding for the Top 16 when it crushed host Zalgiris Kaunas 60-88 on Thursday to end the latter's five-game winning streak. CSKA, the first road winner in Kaunas this season, lifted its record to 10-2 and will finish first in the group with another win or any loss by Tau Ceramica. Zalgiris, already qualified for the Top 16, fell to 7-5 and a share of either fourth or fifth place. Despite injury problems, CSKA ruled the whole way, taking its first double-digit lead in the first quarter and guarding it the rest of the way. A trio of stars paced the winners, with Ramunas Siskauskas scoring 20 points, Trajan Langdon 19 and David Andersen 18 plus 9 rebounds. Among them, they buried 11 of 14 three-point shots, too. CSKA's defense held Marcus Brown, the December MVP who received his award before the game, to just 5 points. DeJuan Collins led Zalgiris with 16 points. Mantas Kalnietis came off the bench for 11, while Marko Popovic and Goran Jurak scored 10 each.

CSKA set the tone early as Langdon drilled a three-pointer and added a shorter jump shot for a quick 0-5 score. Eurelijus Zukauskas put Zalgiris on the board with a free throw, and helped anchor a defense that kept CSKA scoreless for awhile until Siskauskas hit his first basket. Langdon continued bombing from outside the arc, extending CSKA's margin to 7-12. Zalgiris turned to Collins, whose jumper off the dribble and triple strike to cut the difference to 14-15. But then the Zalgiris defense allowed Theodoros Papaloukas to drive and dunk before Siskauskas hit a three-pointer from the top. When David Anderson made back-to-back baskets in the paint, his team had its first double-digit lead on the way to a 16-26 advantage after 10 minutes.

Marko Popovic - ZalgirisZalgiris started the second quarter with sticky one-on-one defense that forced CSKA to turn the ball over as both teams struggled on offense. Paulius Jankunas ended almost 2 scoreless minutes for the hosts, but his points did not prove a breakthrough yet. CSKA answered with a fastbreak and layup by Marcus Goree before Zalgiris got rhythm back as Jurak drilled a triple to shrink the margin to 23-28. Langdon drove to the basket for layup but Collins struck back from downtown. It was wake up call for the guests, who responded with 0-4 run on a drive by Siskauskas and a difficult jumper by Jon Robert Holden. Popovic penetrated and despite tight defense somehow put the ball into the basket but it was almost the last basket for Zalgiris in the second quarter. Anderson drove baseline and Siskauskas silenced the crowd with a three-pointer. Zalgiris couldn't found ways around the strengthened CSKA defense while on the other end, the visitors continued an offensive show in which Langdon nailed another triple that capped a 0-12 run. Popovic hit an extra long bomb from the outside the arc but the halftime whistle nonetheless fixed a solid 30-46 lead for CSKA.

Siskauskas opened second half with acrobatic mid-range jumper to which Holden added three-pointer from the right wing but Collins matched him twice on the other end. The triples shootout continued as Anderson made one more from deep that Dainius Salenga copied. Holden demoralized the hosts with nice penetration that pushed CSKA ahead by 20 points at 39-59. Kalnietis came in and energized the Zalgiris offense, but it didn’t help his team to improve its poor defense as Anderson scored a jumper and Holden a layup. Zalgiris head coach Rimantas Grigas needed a time out. Zalgiris returned back to the game more relaxed as Kalnietis drilled a triple and Jurak added a difficult semihook. Jankunas tried to hit fade away jumper but Goree jumped high enough to block his shot. Last possession belonged to CSKA and Siskauskas made it pay with an open three-pointer from the corner that restored a 20-point lead to the visitors, 46-66.

David Andersen - CSKA MoscowBoth teams exchanged turnovers to start the final quarter before Langdon hit another triple and Popovic matched him on the other side. Poor defense by Zalgiris let Anderson score an easy put-back basket while the hosts searched for weapons on offense. Red-hot Langdon knocked down one more three-pointer to extend CSKA's lead lead to 49-74. Nikos Zisis made a jumper from the high post before Jankunas drove inside for an extra-difficult left-handed jump hook. Jankunas, however, made a hard contact while defending Anderson and left the court with bruised face. Kalnietis seemed the only one who remained fresh in the Zalgiris lineup as he penetrated for a basket, scored in the fastbreak and hit a jumper. However, it was way too late for a comeback and Zalgiris suffered its first bitter defeat in Hale Arena, 60-88.

Head Coaches

GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"First of all, I want to apologize to our devoted fans. We played a terrible game. We were one step behind in every position and allowed CSKA to control the game rhythm. We weren’t aggressive at both ends. We could stop our opponents by using more fouls but my players didn’t follow my instructions. My players focused all their efforts in offense, hoping that we could outscore CSKA. Instead of that, we had to play hard and more physical in defense. CSKA was very well-prepared for this game and hit almost every shot. On the other hand, we did everything required to lose the game."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"We are satisfied not only with the result, but also by the way we played here. We respect Zalgiris because they are doing great this season and usually play terrific at home. I think my players were concentrated and played hard. Ramunas Siskauskas had a great game. It was tough game for him, psychologically speaking, but he proved he is a true champion and played on the highest level. I would like to wish the best luck to Zalgiris in the Top 16."

Players

BROWN, MARCUS
Zalgiris
"I have to find better ways to get quality shots, especially against teams that are playing defense on me the way CSKA did tonight. I have to get quality shots coming off the screens. I take the blame for that one. We will be better prepared if we see CSKA later down the road."
ZUKAUSKAS, EURELIJUS
Zalgiris
"They were hitting three-pointers with very high percentage. Our defense was terrible. Of course, our offense wasn’t good as well. It was a very tough game. It looked like they had more energy than we had. We were ready for a tough game, but when they hit those difficult shots in the first quarter, we kind of lost our spirit. Soon they built a lead very quickly. Maybe we were looking forward to playing this game way too much."
KALNIETIS, MANTAS
Zalgiris
"There was lot of hype around this game. I think we haven’t prepared well for it psychologically speaking and came out to play too nervous. CSKA was very well-prepared for this game. They knew how to play against us. I would say that the key moment was at the end of the first quarter and early in the second quarter, when they had a few easy baskets and got a significant lead. Of course, we missed Michael Bradley but CSKA also played without big men Matjaz Smodis and Aleksey Savrasenko. That made both teams to play with small lineups sometimes. It worked better for our opponents."
SISKAUSKAS, RAMUNAS
CSKA Moscow
"Even when the final margin is quite big, the game wasn‘t so easy. Zalgiris plays very well at home and we had to be concentrated all 40 minutes long. Had we lost this game, our situation in our group would have been very difficult, because other teams are very close to us. We wanted to avoid the mistakes that we had last week. It was difficult to play at home, in Lithuania. I didn’t feel any pressure, but these kind of games are always different for me."
