THE TAKE

An intense clash between domestic champions with eyes on a much larger prize will take place in the Czech Republic on Friday when CEZ Basket Nymburk hosts Spirou Charleroi in the second leg of their Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds series. Spirou holds an 11-point advantage from Game 1 in Belgium, but must protect it to advance to the second stage. Spirou won the opener 79-68 on the strength of Joseph Gomis’s 18 points and a 43-27 rebounding advantage. In fact, Spirou overcame committing 17 turnovers and a poor free throw shooting effort (20 for 33; 60.6%) to register the win. Nymburk enjoyed good production from Weyinmi Efejuku with 19 points, Petr Benda with 15 and Mike Lenzly with 12, but sorely missed injured swingman Tre Simmons as the rest of the team combined to shoot an abysmal 6 for 23 (26.1%) from two-point range and missed all 7 tries from behind the arc. If Simmons, who is questionable with an ankle injury, misses Friday’s game, head coach Ronen Ginzburg will need more on offense from the likes of Afik Nissim, Ladislav Sokolovsky and Adam Koch to have a chance at overtaking the 11-point deficit to reach the next stage. Likewise, the hosts will need a total team effort from Benda, Radek Necas and perhaps even 2.14-meter reserve Ales Chan to hold off Andre Riddick and co. in the paint. Spirou’s team play in the first game is evidenced by the fact that eight different players dished multiple assists and five scored in double figures: Gomis, Demond Mallet, Brian Greene, Brent Wright and Chris Hill. Nymurk will have a tough time choosing which players to try and stop. The key for the Belgian champs will be to follow the Game 1 gameplan: control the glass, pass the ball and make open shots. For Nymburk, it will be to improve its shooting and rebounding and try to get Simmons back in time. As history has shown, 11 points is not mush of an advantage in this type of series and the ultimate winner could come down to the final buzzer.

Tre Simmons - CEZ Nymburk (Photo Nymburk Basketball)Belgian League champions Spirou Charleroi moved one step closer to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague despite losing the finale in their two-game series by 73-71 to host CEZ Nymburk on Friday in the Czech Republic. Spirou had won their opening game by 11 points, so therefore advanced on aggregate score to the second qualifying round to meet Unics Kazan, which won both games of its opening series. On Friday, Spirou contained several runs by Nymburk to try to eclipse the 11-point difference from their first game. On each occasion, Spirou's defense succeded keeping the hosts from threatening the series victory. That's was truest in the fourth quarter, when Nymburk led by 7 points, 64-57, with 6 minutes to play, but could score just 9 more against Spriou's defense the rest of the way. Tre Simmons, who had missed Game 1 of the series, led Nymburk with 17 points, while Mike Lenzly had 15, but 20 turnovers hurt the team's comeback try. Spirou got 16 points from Joseph Gomis, 14 from Chris Hill, 13 from Demond Mallet and 11 from Justin Hamilton. In the second qualifying round, Spirou and Unics will meet next Tuesday and Friday in Charleroi and Kazan, respectively, to keep alive their hopes of making the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season. Nymburk passes directly to the Eurocup regular season.

From the early going, Nymburk staked its comeback try on defense, going up 6-4 after almost 5 minutes, but with 11 points to make up from the first game, the scoring pace was not yet what the hosts needed. Neither could they stop the Spirou perimeter players, as Hill and Greene suddenly pushed their team up 8-13 on the scoreboard. Nymburk needed to react, and did so with a 9-4 run highighted by Afik Nissim's triple to tie 17-17 after 10 minutes. Mallet lifted Spirou once again with back-to-back three-pointers early in the second quarter, making it 19-23. Nymburk responded with another strong run of 11-3 ending with Pavel Pumprla's dunk for a 30-26 advantage. Andre Riddick and Hill kept Spirou close until Lenzly ended the half with a layup good for a 41-38 Nymburk advantage. Spirou, however, was still in the driver's seat, leading the series by 8 points.

Hill went further after halftime, tying on another triple to which Brindley Wright added free throws and Hamilton 5 points to suddenly put Spirou up 41-48 on the scoreboard. Again, Nymburk needed saving, and this time Simmons instigated another short run of 11-4 that tied the game at 52-52. Off-setting triples by Mallet and Lenzly and a layup by Pumprla ended the third quarter with Nymburk ahead 54-52, but needing plenty more in the final quarter. But Spirou did not let Nymburk break free at any time. Even after Radek Nekas sandwiched baskets around a Simmons three-pointer to put the hosts ahead 64-57, Spirou reeled the game back in and smothered Nymburk's comeback tries with defense.

GINZBURG, RONEN
CEZ Nymburk
"I think both teams played an average game tonight. Both teams fought with too many turnovers. With all this we came into position to take lead of more than 11 points with two-and-a-half minutes left in the game. I think Charleroi showed more experience at the end. They were in tough spot but answered with a clutch three-pointer. In both games, we did not start the third quarters well even though we knew Charleroi in pre-season had many times made very good starts to the third quarter. "
BOZZI, GIOVANNI
Spirou Basket
"I am happy with the fact that we qualified today. I dont think we played a good game, though. Too many turnovers, bad shot selection and too many easy baskets that we gave our opponent: those were weak points of our game tonight. Bad shot selection resulted in our bad rebounding position which prevented us from getting second-chance points. At the start of third quarter , everything was looking good for us. We had the game in our hands but then, without any reason, we went into a panic. A lot had to do with Mallet being in foul trouble; we lost focus and direction. At the end of the day I am, of course, happy to be the advancing team."
