THE TAKE

Second place in Group A will be on the line on Thursday when Efes Pilsen hosts Dynamo Moscow at the Abdi Ipekci Arena in Istanbul, Turkey. Heading into the evening's games, Dynamo is tied with Olympiacos Piraeus for second place in the group at 9-4 and Efes is one win behind at 8-5. Dynamo is not only guaranteed to finish second with a victory, but also would earn top-seed privileges in the Top 16 Draw next Monday for having the best record among all second-place teams in the competition. If Efes beats Dynamo and Olympiacos defeats last place RheinEnergie, the Reds will be second and third place will come down to the amount of points that Efes wins by. A victory by at least 7 points would erase Dynamo's 90-83 win from December and put Efes in third and Dynamo fourth. If Efes wins by 6 points or fewer, Dynamo will be third and Efes fourth. Should Efes win and Olympiacos lose, then Efes would win the three-way tie (3-1) against Dynamo (2-2) and Olympiacos (1-3), finishing second with Dynamo third. In the previous meeting between these teams, Dynamo center Lazaros Papadopoulos dominated inside, drawing 9 fouls and shooting 7-of-10 from the field on the way to 20 points and 7 rebounds. Efes will hope to find the answer for Papadopoulos among its corps of big men: Ermal Kuqo (10.2 ppg.), Nikola Prkacin (7.2 ppg.), Marcus Haislip (15.2 ppg., 6.2 rpg., 2.1 bpg.) and Kerem Gonlum. Papadopoulos likely won't have help from Obinna Ekezie (7.1 ppg., 67.9% 2FG), who is still nursing a muscular injury, but will be joined by Antonis Fotsis (13.9 ppg., 6.5 rpg.) in the paint to give Dynamo plenty of alternatives. The Efes backcourt has deadly potential with lethal scorers Drew Nicholas (14.8 ppg., 44.4% 3FG, 3.7 apg.) and Horace Jenkins (13.8 ppg., 2.9 apg.), while teenager Cenk Akyol and LaRon Profit share time at small forward. Dynamo's backcourt starts with Bojan Popovic (10.8 ppg.) and Dimitri Domani (7.2 ppg.), with Eddie Gill (7.6 ppg.) coming off the bench and small forward Travis Hansen (14.2 ppg.) connecting the guards and the big men. Leadership will be at a premium as both teams get this opportunity to move up, and the final result could come down to which players shine brightest down the stretch. What's certain is that this should be a classic Euroleague showdown whose winner will surely enter the Top 16 on a high.

MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"Both teams are already qualified for Top 16. But this game has another meaning for both sides, since the winner can have a better position in the group. For sure, it’s going to be a very hard game for each team. We are going to play against one of the toughest teams of our group. Anyway, we will try to rely on our normal game and try to win with all our effort."
IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"Our first target in this game will be to play without pressure. We can be second, third or fourth, but we are in the Top 16, which is what we wanted before the start of the season. I expect a very interesting game because the two teams playing probably showed the best form in the second part of the first phase. Efes Pilsen is a very well-balanced team, with excellent outside play based on American players like Jennings, Nicholas and Profit, but also with a strong inside game with Prkacin, Kuqo and Haislip, who is for me a very positive surprise. Also, Efes is a more experienced team in the Euroleague than Dynamo, which is playing here for the first time. We will try to play our best basketball, and after four consecutive victories we have more confidence. On the tactical plan, we must to stop Jennkins in his one-on-one play. Also, it will be important to control his outside shots and, of course, rebounds. Unfortunately, we won't be complete, as Obbina Ekezie has muscular problems while young Dimitri Hvostov still has a right hand injury."

"This is a kind of a final game for us for the regular season. We want to complete the group with another win. We are feeling better, playing better and getting stronger. In the last couple of games, we proved that we are playing much better than at the beginning of the season. But the second phase will be stronger than this one. So besides the challenge for a better situation in the group, this is going to be a kind of good preperation for the next stage. We want to see Abdi Ipekci full for our last home game of the regular season."
HANSEN, TRAVIS
Dynamo Moscow
"This will be a very hard but very interesting game, as both teams have shown good form in recent weeks. We have won our last four games and we want to continue in this way, but we will try to play without pressure because our first target - the Top 16 - is already ourse. Now, we we will try to take the best position possible for the draw next Monday."
Lazaros Papadopoulos - Dynamo Moscow Dynamo Moscow finished second in Group A and will be a top-seeded team in the Top 16 draw after edging Efes Pilsen 72-76 on the road in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday. Dynamo finished Group A tied with Olympiacos for the second spot in the standings at 10-4. Dynamo managed not only to be second dur to its one-point tiebreak advantage with the Reds - based on their head-to-head score difference - but also became the best second-ranked team in the competition. That means Dynamo will join the group winners - Tau Ceramica, Panathinaikos and CSKA Moscow - in the top level at Monday's draw. Meanwhile, Efes finished fourth in Group A with an 8-6 record. Antonis Fotsis led the winners with 18 points, but Travis Hansen had 6 of his 16 points in the final 2 minutes, including a pair of free throws to put the victory on ice. Lazaros Papadopoulos added 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for Dynamo. Horace Jenkins had 25 points for Efes, Ermal Kuqo added 16 and Drew Nicholas 13. Efes did not lead in the final period but got within 70-71 with with 2 minutes to go, before Hansen stepped up to assure Dynamo a key victory.

Papadopoulos rejecting Jenkins on a layup attempt to start the game was a good sign of the tough match that lay ahead. Fotsis gave the visitors the game's first lead before Kuqo got Efes in the scoring column. Dynamo want back to Papadopoulos for a jumper, but it was already clear this was a defensive battle. Points came hard until Fotsis unloaded from downtown for a new Dynamo lead, 11-13. Soon, it was Jenkins finding what he sought since than the beginning of the game, his first triple, good for a new Efes advantage, 16-15. Next, Kuqo showed that he could hit from the arc, too, making it 19-15 before Kerem Gonlum scored 4 straight to up the Efes lead to 23-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Horace Jenkins - Efes PilsenEfes nursed along its lead early in the second quarter as another Jenkins triple made it 26-20. After Laron Profit added a layup to the lead, however, Dynamo shooters Travis Hansen and Sergei Monya uncorked back-to-back triples to bring the guests as close as 30-28. Efes eased away again as Cenk Akyol’s fadeway made it 34-28, but now the defenses really took over. Dynamo's pressure over the last three-plus minutes of the half brought Efes to standstill. The hosts were denying easy shots, too, until Papadopoulos fed Fotsis a very nice assist for a spectacular alley-oop that made it 35-30. Sergey Bykov’s single free throw was the last point of the first half, so Efes still held a 35-31 advantage going to the lockers.

Dynamo came out in the third quarter and really turned the game around with a 5-13 run in which strong defense plus fastbreak points of Eddie Gill, Bykov and Fotsis suddenly put the visitors in front 40-44. Efes fought back with quick three-pointers by Marcus Haislip and Drew Nicholas to go ahead again at 48-47, but the home team found scoring difficult soon again. The tactical fight on the court is the one to watch as both sides tried to hit the weakest side of the opponent. Dynamo did it especially inside, by putting Kuqo into foul trouble against Papadopoulo, whose layup before a triple by Gill meant a 52-58 lead for the visitors. Efes tried hard in to catch Dynamo, but when Nicholas's last three-pointer attempt missed, the visitors were still in front, 57-60 after 30 minutes.

Efes took a turn tightening its defense to start the last quarter. Jenkins took advantage by getting the tie at 60-60 when his triple fell. Papadopoulos put Dynamo back in front with another layup, but Jenkins evened the score again at 62-62. Papadopoulos followed Gonlum's dunk with another layup to make it 64-66 and then Bykov penetrated inside to have a layup-plus-free throw to make it 64-69 on Dynamo's favor. Jenkins boosted Efes with a three-pointer, and after Hansen hit free throws, Nicholas also popped from downtown to make it 70-71 with 90 seconds to play. Hansen had the next chance, and downed his jumper. Jenkins lost the ball and fouled Bojan Popovic, who made 1 of his 2 free throws. Efes got the possesion and Jenkins not only made a layup, but earned a technical foul, though he missed the free throw. When Efes got the possesion again from side, Jenkins missed another three-pointer and Hansen made sure of Dynamo's victory by hitting 2 perfect free throws with 13 seconds left.

Head Coaches

MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"There's nothing much to say right now. If you lose four of your seven home games, you can not stand in a better position in your group. It's better to see our situation from that point of view. It's true that our target was to reach the Top 16, but we could have finished the first phase in a better position. We missed with our own mistakes. When we look at the match, I can say that we played a good first half, except the last two minutes. But in the third quarter, we gave the chance to our opponent to score 29 points. At this high level of basketball in Euroleague, if you don't play the defense and the offense at the same level, you can never deserve to win the game, even if you are a good team. Anyway, we could win the game in the last minutes if we can have points from the last attempts of Horace Jenkins for three-pointers. It's not the end of the world to go into the draw from the third level. The most important thing is to change mentality of the game and respect the mentality of the game. If we can improve our comprehension, we can do better in the next round."
IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"It was a very important game for both teams at the end of the first round. Both teams were feeling the pressure of having a good chance for a better place in the group and to have the advantage of the next stage. Because of that reason, it was a very tough game of very good teams. I respect very much Efes Pilsen and my friend Oktay. I think the two teams will be in better shape in the next round. And of course, I want to congratulate my players. Because we start the season from the sixth level and jumped to the first level. Of course, it's not important to be in the first level, but it's true that we jumped very high. I think Marcus Haislip and Drew Nicholas were having problems with the injuries. And that's why they are not good to score the three-points shots like the other games. The other reason of that win is our strong defense. I think my team deserved this victory.”

Players

GONLUM, KEREM
Efes Pilsen
"It was a game which we must win by 8 points. But I think we might play better and change our destiny before that game. We lost very critical games at home and the games that we lost against Climamio Bologna and Le Mans determined our destiny in the group. Now we are on the edge of the second round. Now we have to raise the level our game in the next stage for better results."
FOTSIS, ANTONIS
Dynamo Moscow
"We played great basketball tonight. Efes is a very strong team, but we played with confidence in our ability and we are now in the first level for the draw, something nice for a debutant in the Euroleague."
