THE TAKE

A winner-takes-all showdown to win Top 16 Group E will take place in Vitoria, Spain, where Tau Ceramica hosts Olympiacos on Thursday. Both teams are already qualified to the Quarterfinal Playoffs and tied atop the Group E standings, each with a 4-1 second. The winner of this highly-anticipated game will win Group E and get the home-court advantage against either Real Madrid or Regal FC Barcelona in the upcoming playoffs. The loser will play the Group G champion - Madrid or Barcelona - but without the home-court advantage. Olympiacos faces some injury problems as George Printezis and Sofoklis Schortsianitis are not expected to take part in this critical game. Meanwhile, Josh Childress has just recovered from an abdominal injury and may not see extended playing time. With Schortsianitis sidelined, Nikola Vujcic and Ioannis Bourousis are expected to share more minutes on court, while up-and-coming big man Zoran Erceg and versatile forward Panos Vasilopoulos will come off the bench. Vujcic has a key matchup against Tiago Splitter, in a battle of All-Euroleague centers. Splitter may see some minutes against Bourousis due to his power and rebounding skills. Vujcic, who has scored at least 20 in three straight games, will test his skills against Mirza Teletovic. Will McDonald and Stanko Barac are ready to come off the hosts' bench to provide intensity and size, respectively. The Reds' main concern will be stopping scoring ace Igor Rakocevic and aggressive small forward Pete Mickeal. Tau is extraordinarily deep at both wings, as it also count on reliable veteran Sergi Vidal and swingman Fernando San Emeterio. Rakocevic is ready to test his all-around scoring skills against last year's All-Euroleague second team selection Yotam Halperin. Meanwhile, Mickeal and Vidal have the tough mission to slow Childress and Jannero Pargo. Olympiacos defensive ace Michalis Pelekanos, who played in Spain last season, may see some minutes against Rakocevic, too. Two of the classic Euroleague point guards in this decade are once again facing each other, as Pablo Prigioni of Tau will have yet another battle against former Euroleague MVP Theo Papaloukas of Olympiacos. Papaloukas and Prigioni rank first and second, respectively, in the Euroleague's all-time assists list and have been Final Four regulars for several season. Lynn Greer, a phenomenal clutch shooter, may play a key role for Olympiacos, just like Milos Teodosic. Meanwhile, Vlado Ilievski will provide experience and ball-handling when Prigioni is not on the court. Tau must get Splitter and Teletovic involved to create espace for its backcourt - especially Rakocevic. Olympiacos must rely on Papaloukas and Vujcic, who have played - and won - many big games like this. This game between two top sides promises to feature action and intensity in front of a wild sellout crowd that may prove to be an instant classic.

GAME NOTES

Tau Ceramica
  • Guard Igor Rakocevic leads the Euroleague with 19.3 points scored per game this season.
  • Rakocevic has made at least 1 three-pointer in 20 consecutive Euroleague games.
  • Rakocevic is 2 three-pointers away from reaching Maccabi Electra’s Derrick Sharp for 10th place on the Euroleague Basketball career list. He enters Wednesday’s game against Olympiacos with 214 career threes, but even if he passes Sharp (216), the Maccabi guard will play on Thursday.
  • Forward Mirza Teletovic has drilled 4 three-pointers in seven different games this season and made 3 three other times. He leads the competition with 42 triples this season.
  • Teletovic matched his Euroleague career-high with 22 points last week against Asseco Prokom.
  • Teletovic recorded the first double-double of his Euroleague career against Olympiacos in October 2007. Teletovic had 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds in a 95-90 win.
  • All Euroleague center Tiago Splitter enters this week’s games tied for 10th place on the Euroleague Basketball career shots blocked list with Eurelijus Zukauskas. Both players have 78 career blocks.
  • Center Will McDonald and forward Pete Mickeal made their respective Euroleague debuts against Olympiacos on opening night of last season.
Olympiacos
  • Center Nikola Vujcic has scored at least 20 points in each of his last three games. This marked the first time he has reached the 20-point mark in three straight games since the 2006-07 regular season.
  • Big man Ioannis Bourousis recorded 20 points and 14 rebounds last week against Armani Jeans to notch his league-best sixth double-double of the season. The 14 rebounds also matched his Euroleague career best.
  • Guard Milos Teodosic’s Euroleague debut came against Tau Ceramica on opening night of last season.
  • Teodosic scored a career-best 23 points – including 5-for-6 three-point shooting – over the weekend against Kolossos Rhodes in the Greek League.
  • Point guard Theo Papaloukas has dished a minimum of 4 assists in every game this season and is tied for the league-lead in that category with 5.1 per game.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"We will face a different team, an improved one compared to the team we played against in Greece. They have improved in team play and offensively. I don't reveal anything new if I say they are a quite strong contender, a real challenger for every title this season. Of course Childress is a great player, you can see his physical conditions and his background in the NBA, but he and every other player needs the help of his teammates to make things happen. I don't care a lot about their absences, as they have 15 players in the roster and have to discard three for each game. The remaining 12 are always great players, so whoever comes out is a real threat. We have renewed our strength during the break, so I hope it will be helpful for this game and also for the remainder of the season."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"Rhythm, rebounds and turnovers; these three things will decide the game in Vitoria. The upcoming game against Tau is another tough game that we can win only if we have clear mind and concentration. Basically, it is a game with the same difficulty as the following games in the Euroleague playoffs. With no doubt the home-court advantage is always good, but at the same time it means nothing. Our ambition is to create a team with potential to beat any opponent, in any arena. Tau is a team that works with the same program for many years, a team of great success and consecutive participations in the Final Four, a very experienced team."

"There is always a great expectation before a game like this. You don’t need anything to get motivated. I'm sure it will be an exciting one. Olympiacos is a team that is designed to win it all and there is no doubt they will come to Vitoria to grab the win. But I think we will be able to beat them and finish as the group leaders. I think we have showed so far that we are more of a team than they are, but the only place where we can test this is the basketball court. We can say a lot of things before this game, but the last word will be given on the court. I'm quite sure their motivation will be at the highest level, so we cannot relax a single minute. Each player of their roster can win the game for them."
BOUROUSIS, IOANNIS
Olympiacos
"A very tough game is ahead of us, since we are facing Tau Ceramica in Vitoria. A key point would be to cut their rhythm, which is really high, especially when they compete at their home court. Tau plays really fast and that blocks their opponents. I am sure that if we manage to stop their fast break, we will have many possibilities for the first place in Group E. What we have to keep from our first game against Tau is the defense we played during the last quarter. This is a key factor that we have to use in all our games, since this is the only way to win. Concerning their crowd, I believe they create a great atmosphere, but they are not so fanatic like in other gyms we have played. I don’t think that the hot atmosphere will affect us."
Nikola Vujcic - OlympiacosOlympiacos saved its biggest performance of the Euroleague season so far the Top 16 finale, invading Vitoria, Spain to deal an 80-88 home loss to Tau Ceramica, thereby stealing first place in Group E and homecourt advantage in the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Olympiacos finished with a 5-1 record and will have three home games, if necessary, against Real Madrid in the best-of-five playoff series. Tau fell to 4-2 in Group E and now, without homecourt advantage, will face Group F winner Regal FC Barcelona in the next round. Olympiacos took a lead in the game's fifth minute and refused to let go of it when Tau rallied to within a point with 4 minutes to play. Theodoros Papaloukas and Giannis Bourousis combined for a quick 7 points then and Panagiotis Vasilopoulos buried a killer triple entering the final minute to ice the victory for Olympiacos. Nikola Vujcic led the winners with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Yotam Halperin added 16 points on 4-for-5 three-point shooting, while Bourousis and Jannero Pargo scored 11 each. Mirza Teletovic led Tau with 16 points, while Tiago Splitter had 15, Sergi Vidal 14, Pete Mickeal 13 and Pablo Prigioni 12.

Tiago Splitter - Tau CeramicaTau showed its will in the early going playing fast-tempo basketball, taking advantage of Tiago Splitter's activity in the paint. Despite Pargo opening fire for the visitors with a short fastbreak jumper, the Spaniards amassed a 7-2 lead behind 5 points in a row from the Brazilian center after 2 minutes. The Reds didn’t panic, however, as Nikola Vujcic and Nikos Boroussis took over for a 7-7 tie midway through the quarter. Tau's shooters didn’t find their momentum, missing even open shots, and Olympiacos took advantage to take its first lead, 7-10, after a three-pointer by Yotam Halperim. Vujcic kept rocking inside for Olympiacos, scoring 6 points in a row that extended the visitors' edge to 10-16 after 7 minutes. Tau tried to answer through Pablo Prigioni, who hit back-to-back triples to prevent the Reds from escaping, but Halperin showed up quickly to reply with a couple of bombs of his own, making it 18-26. Only free throws by Mirza Teletovic and a monster dunk by Splitter allowed Tau to get as close as 23-28 at the end of the quarter.

Back-to-back steals by Josh Childress and Theodoros Papaloukes ended up with Olympiacos scoring easy layups to raise its advantage to double digits, 23-32, soon after second quarter tipped off. Tau groped for answers as 2 free throws by Childress and a three-pointer by Greer pushed the Olympiacos lead to 12 points, 25-37, after 13 minutes. Tau coach Dusko Ivanovic called for an urgent timeout, but his team couldn’t find the balance on offense, spending more possessions without points. Olympiacos kept adding to its lead as Vasilopoulos and Vujcic scored to make it a 16-point game, 25-41, midway through the second period. Vlado Ilievski and Teletovic kept the hosts in the game as Olympiacos went through a short offensive crisis. Splitter hit a hook shot at 31-43 with 3 minutes left until halftime, but Halperin needed only one shot to restore the Reds at 31-46. Nerves took over at the home side, as Prigioni had to be benched after committing his second and third fouls in less than a minute before Pargo drilled another triple from the corner as Olympiacos skated into the break with a crowd-silencing 37-51 advantage.

Theo Papaloukas - OlympiacosMickeal kept leading Tau after the break, but his efforts had little return as Olympiacos found Vujcic and Papaloukas to run the show. A great assist by Papaloukas turned into a basket-plus-free throw for Childress that increased visitors’ margin to 41-58 after 24 minutes. The situation seemed to be critical for Tau, but Vidal emerged to hit back-to-back triples, followed by a short jumper in less than a minute to awake the home fans and reduce the gap to only 9 points, 49-58, forcing a timeout by Olympiacos. Another three-pointer, by Teletovic, made it a six-point game right after that, but Bourousis and Halperin quickly came to the rescue to restore the Reds' double-digit advantage at 52-63 after 27 minutes. Although the hosts looked ready to make a move, Olympiacos kept everything under control thanks to Vujcic, who was unstoppable in both the low and the high posts. Teletovic hit a high-bouncing triple to bring Tau within 60-67 entering the last minute, but Panagiotis Vasilopoulos replied with another bomb right after that. Will Mcdonald, with a buzzer-beater dunk, kept Tau within single digits at 62-70 after 30 minutes.

Zoran Erceg restored the double-digit lead for Olympiacos with a three-pointer to open the final quarter, but the hosts didn’t surrender and found Teletovic and Spltter for easy layups. An unsportmanslike foul by Papaloukas allowed Mickeal's foul shot to make it a six-point game, 67-73, after 33 minutes. Halperin hit a jumper to kept a safe margin for Olympiacos, but not for long. Prigioni scored a nice layup, Teletovic beat the shot-clock from downtown and Vidal made an acrobatic reverse to the gap to the minimum, 74-75, the closes that Tau had been to Olympiacos since the first quarter. With 4 minutes to go, and his team struggling to hold its lead, Papaloukas stepped forward. First, he drew an offensive foul on Mickeal; then he fed Bourousis for a huge hook shot; then he pulled a defensive rebound in a crowd and went the other way to bury a triple, making it 74-80 and effectively ending Tau's threat. Papaloukas fed Bourousis again before Vasilopoulos made no doubt about it by burying an open triple from the wing at 77-85 at the start of the final minute. A free throw carousel after that served for nothing but to confirm a monster road win, first place and homecourt advantage in the playoffs for Olympiacos.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"We couldn’t find the right way to play a deciding game like this. We lacked patience and aggressiveness, we played in a way that hurt us in the first half. We improved in the second, but it was too late. This is a demonstration of what I’ve been saying all season long: You don’t win do-or-die games with offense, but with defense. We must learn that if we want to have a chance to win something, we must change our mentality and play aggressive defensive. We took the first option in our offense too many times, we had no patience, so it takes no big effort for the other team’s defense to stop us. They played fine, they played long when they needed to play long and they had patience. The fact that we lost today doesn’t mean that we lost the quarterfinals. We still have chances to go to Berlin."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"I think we played a great game in a great atmosphere. Tau is a very difficult team to beat. They have played excellent so far. But we prepared the game very well and were ready for the challenge. We went through a short crisis in the second half, but we managed to keep calm. I have to congratulate my players because we showed that we are able to play great basketball on a tough court like this. They try always to play fast in transition, but we found the way to minimize their fast tempo basketball. We reached today the level that we want to be at this moment of the competition. I hope to find Tau in the Final Four in Berlin."

"We must learn from this defeat. We have to play the playoffs with much more aggressiveness and especially with better defense. It’s hard to say something after a game like this. I think we are a big team and able to overcome the home-court advantage in the quarterfinals."
BOUROUSIS, IOANNIS
Olympiacos
"We feel great after a win like this. We managed to accomplish the plan we had before the game and that made us the leaders of the group. We knew that we needed to stop their fast break and I think we did a good job at that. We showed great personality as a team and deserved the win. We didn’t panic when they came back and came within 1 point in the last quarter. I think the lessons we learned in the previous game have been very useful to be able to win here tonight and clinch the first place of our group."
