THE TAKE

ASK Riga returns home to host its first Eurocup Group A game, looking to enter the winning column against Zadar. Head coach Ramunas Butautas's side let the opener at Chorale Roanne slip out of its hands and lost 79-75 in overtime. Riga led by 7 points midway through the fourth quarter on the road, but failed to close out the game. Butautas's team forced 22 Roanne turnovers while holding Chorale to 38% shooting from inside the arc and outrebounded the hosts 43-37. But Riga shot just 37% from the field for the game and turned the ball over 20 times. ASK's big duo of center Bruno Sundov and guard Corey Brewer struggled mightily against the Roanne defense, turning the ball over 13 times and making just 9-of-38 shots, including 4-of-15 from long range. Brewer did score 27 points and Sundov added 9 points and 12 rebounds. Butautas got a big help from veteran center Raitis Grafs, who collected 8 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. But with Sundov and Brewer dominating play so much, none of Butautas's other men could really make big enough of a contribution. That will have to change if Riga hopes to gather its first victory against Zadar. Head coach Aleksandar Petrovic's charges already have one win, holding off Maroussi Costa Coffee at home 87-79 in their opener. Zadar used a big third quarter - 30-20 - to grab the victory. Petrovic's men played under control, turned the ball over just 11 times and hit 60% from inside the arc. Guard Marlon Garnett scored 23 points to lead four players in double figures. Forward Hrvoje Peric added 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals off the bench, while center Todor Gecevski scored 16 points and reserve center Deyan Ivanov poured in 17 points. Petrovic did not get much production from the rest of his men - just 13 points - but he has to be pleased with how they stepped up after the recent injury to guard Malik Dixon. Plus forward Joby Johnson went scoreless in 16 minutes. That will likely change against Riga.

Quotes Head Coaches

BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
ASK Riga
"On Sunday, we had a good game in the Baltic League with BK Ventspils. That's why we have a very short time to prepare to play against Zadar. It is good that in the game against Ventspils we led from the start of the mach. Nobody had to play a lot of minutes, so they can stay fresh until Tuesday's game with Zadar. Zadar is very good and strong team with very good coach, Aleksandar Petrovic, who is also my friend."

"On Sunday, we had good game in the Baltic league and that has given a lot of positive energy to our team players. If we want to get in next stage of the Eurocup, we must win all out home games."
Corey Brewer - ASK Riga (Photo: Aldis Neimanis)ASK Riga registered its first Eurocup win this season by downing Zadar 106-94 in the Latvian capital on Tuesday. Both teams join a four-way tie in Group A along with Maroussi Costa Coffee and Chorale Roanne, all with a 1-1 record. Bruno Sundov paced the winners with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Corey Brewer added 21 points on 4-for-4 three-pointers, Uvis Helmanis had 16 also on 4-for-4 from downtown, Milutin Aleksic got 13, Andrius Mazutis tallied 11 while Raitis Grafs contributed 10 for ASK. Rok Stipcevic led Zadar with 24 points. Hrvoje Peric added 20, Juby Johnson had 17 while Todor Gecevski and Deyan Ivanov each got 11 for the guests. Sundov and Aleksic shined late in the first quarter to give ASK a 35-26 lead after 10 minutes. Peric took over late in the first half to make Zadar get a 46-49 margin at the break. Peric gave Zadar its biggest margin, 55-63, but Helmanis and Mazutis fueled a 13-0 run for a 68-63 ASK edge. Zadar managed to tie it at 71-71, but Sundov and Brewer stepped up to make ASK register a key win.

Helmanis got ASK going with a second-chance layup while Sundov and a three-pointer by Sandis Valters allowed the hosts to get a 7-4 edge. Ivanov hit a jumper while Marlon Garnett and Johnson fired in consecutive triples to give Zadar a 10-12 lead. Sundov scored inside while Brewer struck from downtown to put ASK back ahead, 15-14, as both teams traded baskets at full speed. Helmanis and Brewer stayed on fire but Stipcevic and Johnson tied the game again, 20-20. Sundov and Aleksic joined the three-point shootout while Grafs gave ASK an eight-point lead, 30-22. Aleksic boosted the hosts' lead to 35-26 after 10 outstanding minutes. Garnett and Stipcevic combined for 4 quick points early in the second quarter while a put-back layup by Peric got Zadar within 39-34. Aleksic and Valters took over with consecutive baskets but Johnson and Peric combined for all points in a 0-9 Zadar run that tied the game at 43-43. Brewer sank a triple but Peric completed the guests' comeback, 46-47. A layup by Tomislav Ruzic fixed the halftime score at 46-49.

Rok Stipcevic - Zadar (Photo: Aldis Neimanis)Brewer buried a triple and Helmanis added free throws to restore a 51-49 ASK edge immediately after the break. It didn't last long, however, as Peric had 6 points in a 0-9 run that made Zadar regain the lead, 51-58. A three-pointer by an unstoppable Peric made it an eight-point game, 55-63. Mazutis followed a triple with a layup, igniting a 13-0 run in which Helmanis struck twice from downtown for a 68-63 ASK edge. Ivanov scored inside while Stipcevic nailed back-to-back triples for a 71-71 tie. Aigars Vitols joined the three-point shootout while Grafs gave ASK a 76-72 edge after 30 minutes. Sundov and Aleksic nailed consecutive three-pointers to boost the hosts' margin to 84-76 with 7 minutes remaining. A layup-plus-foul by Valters made it a double-digit margin, 87-77. Stipcevic brought Zadar within 89-84 but Sundov had 4 points in an 8-1 run that sealed the outcome, 97-85, with 3 minutes to go. Zadar kept trying, but ASK had already sealed an important home win.

Head Coaches

BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
ASK Riga
"The game was really hard. We knew it beforehand. We had seen several Zadar games before, so we had enough information about the opponent, but the time to prepare was short. Our preparation for the game was serious. The second and third quarters we didn't play very disciplined, so we had to use several timeouts to make changes. I didn't expect that both teams would score 200 points combined. We let some players (Peric and Stipcevic) play pretty free, but also limited other players."
PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Zadar
"We led at the start of the game but accepted ASK's shoot and run game. And for it we need some more playmakers in the team. We missed three outside players today. That was the key point if you want play this type of basketball. The other problem was when we pulled away by 8 points but let them an easy comeback. You need to focus for 40 minutes when you play that kind of basketball. We did not have another point guard, but ASK's coach rotated point guards many times to retain high intensity. And that was our biggest problem. In the key moments of the game we couldn't control the rhythm."

Players

SUNDOV, BRUNO
ASK Riga
"It was a very hard game, because Zadar is a good team. We were prepared for the game and I'm glad we won. I had extra motivation for this game, but I played like I normally do. Every game is important. We lost concentration in the second quarter, but we can't play perfect all the time."
STIPCEVIC, ROK
Zadar
"We knew that ASK is dangerous team. They have beaten Zalgiris, a Euroleague team this season, and other good teams. Unfortunately we couldn't win tonight."
