Two teams headed in different directions finish up the Top 16 together in Group G when Aris TT Bank hosts Unicaja in Thessaloniki, Greece on Wednesday. Aris (0-5) ran out of chances to make it to the Quarterfinal Playoffs but is still looking for its first-ever Top 16 victory. Meanwhile, Unicaja (4-1) is already the Group G champion and will face Winterthur FC Barcelona in the playoffs regardless of Wednesday's result. Both teams faced each other in Malaga, Spain last month and Unicaja edged Aris 76-74 behind 16 points and 7 rebounds from Kostas Vasileadis (6.2 ppg.) and 15 points from Berni Rodriguez (11.8 ppg., 41.5% 3FG, 2.8 apg.). Those two players will share playing time at both wing spots along with sharp shooter Marcus Faison (6.2 ppg.) and do-it-all swingman Jiri Welsch (10.3 ppg., 45.9% 3FG, 1.4 spg.). Rodriguez will test his defensive skills against Alex Scales (15.2 ppg., 3.5 rpg.), the current Top 16 best scorer. Meanwhile, Faison and Vasileadis are expected to have a shootout against Savvas Iliadis (7.5 ppg.), Simonas Serapinas and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (4.6 ppg.), whose season is set to come to an end as he can only play Euroleague games with Aris. Meanwhile, Unicaja dropped to 4-2 but was already the Group G champion despite finishing in a first-place tie with Dynamo Moscow due to tiebreak advantages. Simonas Serapinas led the winners with 16 points off the bench. Alex Scales added 13 points, Mike Wilkinson and Dimitris Tsaldaris each had 11 while Savvas Iliadis scored 10 points for Aris. Marcus Faison had 18 points for Unicaja while Daniel Santiago added 13 for the guests, who travelled without Pepe Sanchez and Ignacio De Miguel. Aris limited Unicaja to just 14-of-35 two-pointers and 8-of-29 triples tonight, and forced the guests into 20 turnovers. Our goal was to share playing time among the players. Everybody played according to their current physical condition and hopefully nobody got injured. Aris stands in the second position in the Greek League and they have been very competitive in the whole Euroleague year. Therefore, they deserve to end the Top 16 with a win and maybe more. From now on, we have to stay focused in the couple of games in the Spanish League before facing Barcelona in the Euroleague playoffs. Despite having the lowest budget among the eight [remaining] teams, we will try to compete in the series and reach the Final Four. Finally, I hope that Marcus [Brown] will recover from his injury soon, because we have missed him very much during all year.
