THE TAKE

An interesting game in the fight to reach the Top 16 in Group C is scheduled at 8:15 CET on Wednesday n Moscow, Russia, where CSKA hosts Maroussi BC. CSKA shares a three-way tie for second place in Group C with a 3-2 record while Maroussi is tied for fifth lace at 1-4 with Union Olimpija. A win would catapult CSKA really close to clinching a Top 16 berth. It won't be an easy task, as CSKA needed a buzzer-beating rainbow triple by Viktor Khryapa to edge Maroussi 65-66 in their season opener, one of the most thrilling finishes in Euroleague history. Maroussi will no doubt be seeking revenge. There is some good news for CSKA, as power forward Andrey Vorontsevich is back in action for the hosts, adding much-needed help in the frontcourt. With center Dimitry Sokolov still sidelined, Vorontsevich and Sasha Kaun will see most minutes around the baskets, with power forward Ivan Radenovic and blue-collar big man Nikita Kurbanov coming off the bench. Khryapa is set to offer a helping hand at power forward due to his outstanding versatility and team-oriented game. With Levon Kendall and Stephen Arigbabu still sidelined, Maroussi relies on Jared Homan to battle against Kaun. Dimitrios Mavroeidis, on of the best per-minute performers in the entire Euroleague, will provide instant offense off the bench against Radenovic and Kurbanov, but Maroussi also counts on Pat Calathes and Stevan Nadjfeji to help at both ends. Calathes is ready to use his versatility and aggresseness against Khryapa in what could be a key aspect in this game. Speaking of nightmare matchups, Maroussi has to find the way to stop former Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas, who comes off his best game of the season against Caja Laboral. Siskauskas has his perfect complement in Trajan Langdon, ready to help his team in many ways - outside shooting, leadership and defense. J.R. Holden is ready to see minutes at off-guard together with Zoran Planinic at playmaker. Anton Ponkrashov will offer range and driving skills at point guard off the bench. Maroussi has the right man to battle against Siskauskas, none other than Kostas Kaimakoglou, whose size, mobility and intensity make him the perfect candidate to stop him. Kaimakoglou, a natural-born leader, also offers driving skills and one-on-one options to his team on offense. Michalis Pelekanos is ready to stop Langdon, who at the same time will have an interesting matchup against Jamon Lucas. Billy Keys has the tough mission to face Holden in a critical matchup for the outcome of this game. Maroussi must slow down the game tempo - just as it did in its home game in October - and get Kaimakoglou and Mavroeidis involved. CSKA must be its usual self on defense and rely on its bigger experience to win an important game. Expect a intense battle in the Russian capital this Wednesday.

Quotes Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"The meeting with Maroussi in Athens was our first game of the Euroleague season, moreover, it was a road game and it was very tough. Maroussi is a very dangerous opponent, ready to fight against any favorite. You can just watch their game in Tel Aviv, where the Greek team had its chances until the end after getting an advantage on the glass. Keys and Lucas are very aggressive guards, and the team has a number of powerful big men like Kaimakoglu, Homan, Mavroeidis. It is very difficult to fight against them under the basket, and they try to slow down the pace of the game, to make the opponent play half-court offense. Thus it will be extremely important to be focused, to pay better attention to defense and rebounds, and to play disciplined offense."
BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
"CSKA Moscow is one of the biggest clubs in European basketball history, which has also left its mark on the Euroleague in the last decade. We lost against them at home at the buzzer and this was a very bad feeling, but we have to look forward and learn from such a situation. Since then, CSKA has improved a lot and they always have first-class players, especially on the perimeter. Our target, as always, is to stay competitive, be motivated and not give an easy game to our opponents."

Players

KAUN, SASHA
CSKA Moscow
"We studied a lot of video and confirmed that Maroussi's main strength is their ability to play under the basket, especially on rebounds. They were very solid against Panathinaikos, then even outrebounded Maccabi, winning a lot of extra possessions on the offensive glass. I think this can be explained by the big number of three-point shots taken by their backcourt of Keys and Lucas. Of course, I will do my best to help my team, but we will need our guards' help to get those long rebounds and to defend well against Keys, not letting him to have the kind of night when the shooter becomes unstoppable. I did not play during our first meeting because of injury, but now I am healthy, confident and anxious to make a difference in the game."
HOMAN, JARED
Maroussi BC
"We know who we play against and this is a big motivation for our team in order to try our best. We are tough guys and defeats don't disappoint us. Maybe we should have a better record than our current 1-4, but this is a fact and doesn't change things."
J. R. Holden - CSKA MoscowCSKA Moscow rejoined the race to win Group C by thrashing Maroussi BC 78-65 in the Russian capital on Wednesday. CSKA improved to 4-2, registered its third consecutive win and faces a pivotal road game against Lottomatica Roma next week. Meanwhile, Maroussi fell to 1-5 and needs to beat Union Olimpija at home next week to keep hope of making it to the Top 16. J.R. Holden led the winners with 16 points. Trajan Langdon and Viktor Khryapa each added 13 and Sasha Kaun had 12 for CSKA. Dimitris Mavroeidis had 11 points for Maroussi and Billy Keys added 10. Khryapa led a 6-0 run that allowed CSKA to get a 15-13 edge after 10 minutes. A corner three-pointer by Pat Calathes gave Maroussi its last lead, 19-20. Langdon and a dominant Kaun helped CSKA to regain the lead, 35-30, at halftime. Holden buried three triples after the break and got some help from Kaun and Ramunas Siskauskas to boost the hosts' lead to 58-42. Maroussi did not recover and only rallied once the outcome was clear, allowing CSKA to cruise to a well-deserved win.

Langdon got CSKA going with a big triple, but Keys answered from downtown for the teams’ first points. Maroussi tried to open the court with Kostas Kaimakoglou at power forward, trying to find Jared Homan against Kaun in the low post. The game was scoreless for more than three minutes until Kaimakoglou banked in a three-pointer from the top of the key. Langdon took over with a driving layup, but Jamon Lucas bettered that with a seven-meter bomb, good for a 5-9 Maroussi edge. Zoran Planinic scored in transition, but Kaimakolgou kept pacing the guests with a jump hook, causing CSKA to call timeout at 7-11. Khryapa scored down low while Siskauskas added a fast break layup to tie the score. CSKA improved its defense as Khryapa capped a 6-0 run with a jump hook. Homan matched him at the other end with a five-meter jumper, but Siskauskas fed Kaun for a big dunk that put CSKA back ahead, 15-13, after 10 minutes.

Kaun slammed it again right at the start of the second quarter, but Stevan Nadjfeji downed a three-pointer to keep Maroussi close. Holden buried his trademark stop-and-pop jumper as CSKA opted for a quick lineup with Ivan Radenovic and Andrey Vorontsevich together on court. Maroussi improved its defense and Calathes followed a free throw with a corner triple to put the guests back ahead, 19-20. CSKA kept struggling to control the game rhythm and tried twin point guards with Planinic and Holden on court. Langdon downed a three-pointer and after Mavroeidis sank free throws, Langdon struck again from downtown for a 25-22 CSKA lead. Radenovic shined with a layup-plus-foul coming off the baseline, but Nadjfeji kept the guests close at 28-24. Holden downed a triple off the dribble and Khryapa buried a tough jumper that boosted the hosts' lead to 33-24. Siskauskas once again found Kaun for another slam, but free throws by Homan and Mavroeidis as well as a fast break layup by Keys kept Maroussi within 35-30 at halftime.

Dimitrios Mavroeidis - Maroussi BCLucas fed Homan for an easy layup immediately after the break, as CSKA started to improve its ball circulation. Kaun beat the shot clock with a jump hook that Keys matched with a six-meter shot. Holden nailed a triple from the right wing and Khryapa added a seven-meter bomb for a 43-34 CSKA edge. Maroussi could not find easy options in offense, but Nadjfeji tried to change things with a driving layup. Siskauskas joined the three-point shootout to make it a double-digit game, 46-36. CSKA controlled the game tempo with physical defense, but a running three-pointer by Keys gave the guests some hope at 46-39. Holden sank another triple, igniting a 7-0 CSKA run that Siskauskas capped with a mid-range jumper. Michalis Pelekanos tried to change things with a bomb from downtown, but Kaun stayed on hot with a put-back layup and Holden added his fourth triple to break the game open, 58-42, at the end of the third quarter.

Lucas sank a five-meter jumper early in the fourth quarter, as Maroussi tried to be more aggressive in defense to work its way back in the game. Calathes added a layup in transition to bring the guests within 58-46. Vorontsevich stepped up with a three-pointer, however, while Khryapa shined with a big dunk that sealed the outcome, 62-46, with eight minutes to go. Maroussi kept trying, however, and a tip-in by Mavroeidis and an incredible three-pointer by Lucas kept the guests within 64-51. Vorontsevich struck again from downtown and Anton Ponkrashov found his first points for a 71-53 CSKA margin with six minutes left. Everything was said and done already, as CSKA confirmed its good momentum and showed that its trademark defense is as effective as ever.

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"Our team showed its best side, playing very focused until the last second. We had two main tasks – to stop Maroussi’s leaders, Keys and Lucas, and to fight for rebounds where our opponents are very strong. It is very difficult to do both as the opponent gets more space when you pay too much attention to perimeter defense. But we were able to control the glass thanks to great play of Khryapa and Kaun, who improves game by game. They controlled the glass and opened up more opportunities for Holden, Langdon and Siskauskas."
BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
"It is a very difficult job to play against such a great team like CSKA, which found its rhythm and regained its shape in comparison to our game in Athens. I think we played focused for all the game with the exception of the third quarter when we missed Holden, Langdon and Siskauskas and allowed them to score from outside. We had problems with rebounds. Kaun and Khryapa made it difficult for our big men. CSKA got a 10-point advantage and from that moment it was very difficult to come back. Especially if you take into consideration that we lost our captain Kaimakoglu in the first quarter due to injury."
