THE TAKE

Montepaschi Siena will look to continue its strong start to the season when it hosts Zalgiris Kaunas on Wednesday. Montepaschi enters the game holding a share of the Group B lead with a 5-1 record and became one of the first teams to advance to the Top 16 last week. Meanwhile, Zalgiris is one of only two remaining winless teams in the competition and has all but given up on reaching the next stage. Only a win on Montepaschi’s home court, where the team has won eight straight and 13 of its last 14 Euroleague games dating back to the start of last season, can revive Zalgiris’s slim hopes. The Lithuanian champs know that they can play with Montepaschi. Zalgiris led 43-40 at halftime when they met earlier this season, but the Italian champs dominated the second half 24-53 to record a 26-point win. Rimas Kaukenas paced Montepaschi with 27 points that night. Now Zalgiris will try to do better. Head coach Gintaras Krapikas knows that he can count on his two big men, center Loren Woods and power forward Paulius Jankunas, but they will face a tough lineup as Montepaschi boasts Ben Eze, Shaun Stonerook and All-Euroleague pick Ksistof Lavrinovic at the big man spots. Zalgiris’s biggest weakness has been in the backcourt, where injuries and youth have coupled with playmaker Willie Deane’s struggles to disrupt the Zalgiris attack, which is last in the league with just 61.8 points per game and has committed a league-high 18.3 turnovers per game. Deane won’t have an easy time picking up his breakthrough against Terrell McIntyre and Morris Finley. And players like Mantas Kalnietis and Zygimantas Janavicius are still growing into their roles as they try to hold their own against veterans like Henry Domercant and Kaukenas. An important matchup for the visitors to control will be at small forward, where Jonas “The Bull” Maciulis squares off against Romain Sato. On paper, Montepaschi as home is simply too strong for Zalgiris. Head coach Simone Pianigiani’s men average nearly 20 points per game more than Zalgiris, shoot better from every range and commit half as many turnovers. Nevertheless, Zalgiris’s hunger for its first win is surely stronger than Montepaschi’s to avoid losing and that will could make the difference. Still, the visitors would need to play flawless basketball to upset Montepaschi in Siena.

GAME QUOTES

Montepaschi Siena
  • Forward Shaun Stonerook needs just 2 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Shooting guard Henry Domercant has made at least 1 three-pointer in 11 consecutive Euroleague appearances.
  • Montepaschi Siena has won eight straight and 13 of its last 14 Euroleague home games dating back to the start of last season.
  • All Euroleague Big man Ksistof Lavrinovic’s twin brother, Darjus Lavrinovic, was an All-Euroleague second team performer for Zalgiris in the 2005-06 season.
  • Reserve big man Tomas Ress set his Euroleague career-high in scoring with 16 points in an 89-64 rout of Zalgiris last season. He also set his Euroleague-high in rebounds against Zalgiris, notching 9 with Fortitudo Bologna in an 81-86 road win in February 2006.
Zalgiris
  • Zalgiris is off to its worst ever start to a Euroleague season. The club has lost 10 in a row dating back to last season. Zalgiris’s last Euroleague win came in the Top 16 last season against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
  • Rookie guard Sarunas Vasiliauskas made his Euroleague debut two weeks ago, but has not yet scored his first Euroleague points.
  • Forward Tomas Masiulis, who returned to Zalgiris this season after six seasons in Poland, first left the club to play for Montepaschi in March 2002. Current Montepaschi head coach Simone Pianigiani was an assistant coach on that team.

Quotes Head Coaches

KRAPIKAS, GINTARAS
Zalgiris
"We are in a better mood after this weekend's victory against Lietuvos Rytas in the Lithuanian League, but the most important thing for us is to continue to play better basketball as we did in the game against Lietuvos Rytas and, partially, in the game against Panathinaikos. I think my team finally understood that we can win against tough teams only if we play together and help each other on the court. I am happy having back Vasiliauskas and Deane after being ill last week. Eurelijus Zukauskas is suffering pains in the back and missed a few practices, but I believe that all my players will be ready for Wednesday's game. The first leg game against Siena was very tough for us, because we were coming off a difficult situation in the club and were unprepared. I hope that my players will be more focused and play team-oriented basketball in the upcoming match. We have to fight until the very end of the game. If we do that, we can expect to win."

SALENGA, DAINIUS
Zalgiris
"Montepaschi is a very strong team. They have a lot of good players and play solid basketball. Last season they made it to the Final Four and in the off-season their roster remained almost the same, so they continue to play good quality basketball. First of all we have to run very aggressive defense because they play at home and feel comfortable there. We have to neutralize their key offensive threats like McIntyre, Kaukenas and Lavrinovic. Of course, good defense is just a one side of the same coin, because will have to be sharp on the offense, too. It’s going to be difficult task, because Siena plays tough defense."
Henry Domercant - Montepaschi SienaMontepaschi Siena stayed in the race to win Group B by downing Zalgiris 100-93 at home on Wednesday. Montepaschi improved to 6-1 and will tie for first place with either Panathinaikos or Regal FC Barcelona, who face each other tomorrow, at the end of this round. Meanwhile, Zalgiris dropped to 0-7 and is all but mathematically out of the Top 16 race in this group. Henry Domercant paced the winners with 21 points on 4-for-4 three-pointers. Ksistof Lavrinovic contributed 19, Rimantas Kaukenas added 17, Terrell McIntyre got 14 while Romain Sato had 11 for Montepaschi. Jonas Maciulis led Zalgiris with 21 points. Mantas Kalnietis added 20 while Loren Woods had 17 for the guests. Woods, Kalnietis and Maciulis allowed Zalgiris to get its last lead, 18-19, late in the first quarter. It didn't last long, however, as Montepaschi got its trademark offense rolling in the second quarter. Kaukenas, an unstoppable Lavrinovic and a buzzer-beating triple by Domercant allowed the hosts to boost their margin to 57-40 at halftime. Zalgiris rallied after the break, as Maciulis, Kalnietis and an outstanding Woods got the guests within 66-61 after 28 minutes. Domercant, Sato and Kaukenas stepped up to make Montepaschi seal the outcome midway through the fourth quarter, as Zalgiris rallied only in the final 3 minutes.

Sato got Zalgiris going with a layup but Kalnietis immediately answered from downtown for a 2-3 Zalgiris lead. Benjamin Eze and Woods traded layups, as Montepaschi tried to adjust its defense in the early going. Shaun Stonerook scored in the paint while McIntyre added a three-pointer to give the hosts a 9-5 lead. Maciulis stepped up with a power layup that Domercant matched with a mid-range jumper. Dainius Salenga took over with a power basket that Eze improved with a three-point play, good for a 14-9 Montepaschi edge. Kalnietis scored in transition and Maciulis added a put-back layup to keep Zalgiris in the game, 14-13. McIntyre and Jankunas exchanged baskets while Woods put Zalgiris back ahead, 16-17. Stonerook scored coming off the baseline that Woods erased with an outstanding reverse layup, making Montepaschi call timeout at 18-19. Stonerook and Domercant nailed consecutive triples while Kaukenas beat the buzzer with a close jumper for a 26-19 Montepaschi edge after 10 minutes.

Mantas Kalnietis - ZalgirisKaukenas kept pacing Montepaschi with a running layup early in the second quarter. Maciulis folowed a big three-pointer with a layup while a fallaway jumper by Willie Deane got Zalgiris within 29-26. Kaukenas took over with a layup-plus-foul and fed Marco Carrareto for a fast break layup. Salenga banked in a floating layup that Jankunas followed with an easy basket to keep Zalgiris within 34-31. Sato sank a triple, as Montepaschi slowly got its run-and-gun game going. Stonerook scored down low, as Zalgiris tried to change things with a timeout. A five-meter by McIntyre, however, gave Montepaschi its first double-digit lead, 42-32. Lavrinovic dunked it but Tadas Klimavicius took over with a smooth turnaround jumper. An unstoppable Lavrinovic stayed on fire with 4 points in a 6-0 run and then answered to Kalnietis' corner triple with a layup. Domercant beat the buzzer with a triple, good for a 57-40 Montepaschi margin at halftime.

woods sank a jumper right after the break, as Zalgiris tried a zone defense now. Domercant easily beat with with a layup that Woods matched with free throws to keep the guests within 59-44. Sato and Maciulis traded triples while Kalnietis took over with an acrobatic layup to give Zalgiris some hope at 62-50. Montepaschi missed open shots now while Woods picked up a loose ball to put it in. Montepaschi called timeout and Domercant struck from downtown but Salenga hit a turnaround jumper while Kalnietis brought Zalgiris within single digits, 65-56. Montepaschi kept missing open shots against Zalgiris' effective zone defense. Meanwhile, Maciulis buried another three-pointer while Kalnietis added a floating layup to get the guests back in the game, 66-61. McIntyre shined with a backdoor layup while Domercant followed a jumper with a running triple to give the hosts some fresh air, 73-61. Free throws by Maciulis kept Zalgiris within 73-63 after 30 minutes.

Sato and Lavrinovic made free throws right at the start of the fourth quarter, as Montepaschi used Kaukenas as point guard early in this period. Zalgiris answered by using twin playmakers - Deane and Sarunas Vasiliauskas, who made foul shots for a 77-65 deficit. Lavrinovic stepped up with an easy basket and soon dunked it in transition for a 81-66 Montepaschi margin. Eurelijus Zukauskas tried to ignit the guests' comeback and Maciulis took over with a wild power layup for a 82-70 deficit. Kaukenas scored in penetration and soon nailed a triple to seal the outcome, 87-72, midway through this period. Maciulis kept trying to keep Zalgiris alive and Jankunas added a layup but it was too little, too late for the guests. Montepaschi will keep fighting to become a top-seeded team in the Top 16 Draw, since Zalgiris will have to keep looking for its first Euroleague win this season.

"I think that our aggressiveness was not at the highest level tonight. Our focus and concentration wasn't the way iy should have been. We played a decent game, but not a good game. There are no excuses for him. We had to step on court more focused than at the start of the first and third quarter. We also let them score a lot of points late in the game, which is unacceptable. Maybe Ksistof and I are a little more motivated against Zalgiris, but in the end, it is another Euroleague game and you always have to be ready to play. We try to use each other's strengths and that is the bottom ine. We have to rest a little now and learn from our mistakes, trying to be more aggressive next time."
