THE TAKE

A pair of domestic champions are ready to face each other in the Group C opener for both teams when Real Madrid visits Fenerbahce Ulker in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday. Fenerbahce, the Turkish League champion, looked for young talent and athleticism and brought in players like James White, Emir Preldzic and Gasper Vidmar to play along superstars Mirsad Turkcan, Ibrahim Kutluay and Will Solomon. Meanwhile, Real Madrid kept the core of players that led the team to win both the Spanish League and the ULEB Cup titles, as well as adding Michalis Pelekanos and Lazaros Papadopoulos. Both teams are facing injury uncertainties. For Fenerbahce, Kutluay has been sick with flu and Turkcan suffered a broken nose in recent days. For Madrid, big man Felipe Reyes didn't travel due to back problems and center Venson Hamilton is a game-time decision due to injury. Solomon will be expected to lead Fenerbahce, becoming the man to stop for Real Madrid. The guests feature the same playmakers as last season, Raul Lopez and Kerem Tunceri, who returns to his home country to face Fenerbahce. If Kutluay does not recover in time, combo guard Omer Onan, athletic forward White or defensive specialist Rasim Basak and even playmaker Hakan Demirel will see extended playing time. Basak will test his skills against Alex Mumbru, who is on fire recently. Meanwhile, Onan and White will have the tough mission to face top guns Louis Bullock and Charles Smith, the ULEB Cup final MVP last season. Bullock is often unstoppable one-on-one, so Solomon, White and Onan must stop him if Fener wants to keep its chances alive. Damir Mrsic will help Solomon and Kutluay, if available, to try to outscore Real Madrid. Do-it-all swingman Pelekanos and top prospect Sergio Llull round a deep backcourt for Real Madrid. Papadopoulos will be the man to stop in the paint, even when Madrid has other weapons such as Hamilton, a superb defensive center and versatile forward Axel Hervelle. The entire Madrid frontcourt is set to test its rebounding skills against Turkcan, the Euroleague's all-time top rebounder, as well as against Preldzic, Oguz Savas and Semih Erden. Even when Madrid is the favourite for this game, Fenerbahce is ready to show that its mix of experience and youth can also pay off in the short run.

Quotes Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"I would prefer to have another game instead of playing against Real Madrid at first. We are not in good enough shape yet, as we are still trying to play better. We need time to know each other to play better. But, you must play because the time has come. Real Madrid is a great opponent that is full of glory with great tradition. They did great job when they beat an NBA team, the Toronto Raptors, ten days ago. They looked to be in excellent shape. They all played very well. They have many excellent players who are difficult to stop, like Charles Smith, Louis Bullock, Lazaros Papadopoulas, Raul Lopez, Kerem Tunceri, Axel Hervelle. They also add great talent with Venson Hamilton beside Felipe Reyes. They have a complete team. Blagota Sekulic is great fighter, great rebounder. So naturally those details are enough to say that we will have a very hard challange. We have to play 40 minutes with all our energy, full of talent and hope to win the game. We have to do everything to win the game."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"We start out way in the 2007-08 Euroleague very motivated and animated to play a strong role in our first game, even though we play on a tough court, one that tends to be sold out and where the fans always put pressure on the visitors. For this game, we won't be able count on one of our important players, Felipe Reyes, who is still recovering from acute lumbago. We also don't know if Venson Hamilton wil be able to play, so that would also complicate an already-difficult task. Fenerbahce has a solid team that is half veterans and half young guys. They are notable for great outside shooting, their big men as well as their perimeter guys. At the start of this season, they have shown their quality in the Turkish League and the President's Cup. They are playing good basketball now and I'm sure will play better still within a few weeks."

"We are going to start the new season with a very tough game against Real Madrid. There’s no doubt that they are really one of the most dangerous teams of the new season. We are a little bit younger than the previous seasons, but this does not mean that we will be an easy opponent to Real Madrid. First of all, we have some of the best fans in Europe and we will have their support behind us. Secondly, we still have plenty of talented players like Ibrahim Kutluay, Willie Solomon, Damir Mrsic and Omer Onan, who has big scoring potential behind the arc. So for sure, this is a very hard game to play. But we will try to win with all our might for sure, too."
TUNCERI, KEREM
Real Madrid
"We all arrive in Istanbul with the idea of achieving our first victory in this edition of the Euroleague. It's always important to start on the right foot, and it would be even more important to do so away from home on such a difficult court. It's never easy to play on that court, because the fans are always pushing their team from well before the game through the final minute. They put a lot of pressure on the opponent and give their team's players a lot of confidence with which to play the game, making them feel very well backed. Our opponents are a high-quality team in which the key player for me is Solomon, but they also have really great players like Kutluay and Turkcan. They are great on the perimeter, with high three-point shot percentages, and strong on defense, particularly Onan, who I suppose will be assigned to stop our most productive scorers, Bullock and Smith."
Axel Hervelle - Real Madrid Real Madrid had the best possible return to the Euroleague after a one-year absence by downing Fenerbahce Ulker 72-80 in Istanbul, Turkey in Group C on Thursday. Madrid improved to 1-0 in Group C despite travelling without Felipe Reyes and losing Louis Bullock midway through the opening quarter. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce Ulker missed star guard Will Solomon, out with a last-minute injury. Axel Hervelle led the winners with a Euroleague career-best 23 points on 5-of-7 three-pointers. Charles Smith added 17 on 5-of-6 three-pointers while Alex Mumbru had 10 for Madrid. Mirsad Turkcan led Fenerbahce with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Damir Kaan added 17 points on his 37th birthday while Ibrahim Kutluay got 14 for the hosts. Madrid rolled in the opening half, as 12 steals and 7-of-9 three-pointers were enough reason to break the game open, 31-48, at halftime. Turkcan led the Fenerbahce comeback, as the hosts got as close as 64-68 early in the fourth quarter. Mumbru and Raul Lopez allowed Madrid to leave the court with an important road win.

Hervelle opened the scoring for Madrid with free throws before Gasper Vidmar matched with a layup for a 2-2 tie. Fenerbahce tried to slow down the game tempo in the early going, but didn't find good shots. Bullock buried his first triple, but at the other end Vidmar provided a highlight with an in-your-face dunk and foul against Hervelle. Vidmar picked up his third foul in as many minutes, while a fast break layup by Bullock and an alley-oop dunk by Smith gave Madrid a 5-10 edge. Hervelle and Kutluay traded triples, but Madrid kept collecting steals. Another fast break layup by Hervelle caused the hosts to call timeout at 8-15. Turkcan stepped up with a driving layup, but Hervelle grabbed a ball on the floor and stood up to nail his second three-pointer. Smith also scored from downtown to break the game open, 10-21. Coach Bogdan Tanjevic tried a new frontline with Semih Erden and Oguz Savas, but Lazaros Papadopoulos followed an alley-oop layup with a three-point play. Smith fired in a seven-meter bomb as part of a 0-17 run, which Alex Mumbru capped with a free throw that gave Madrid a 10-30 lead after 10 minutes, during which the hosts committed 10 turnovers and Madrid enjoyed 8 steals.

Gasper Vidmar - Fenerbahce UlkerWith Bullock now on the bench resting Fenerbahce tried to get back in the game. Emir Preldzic shined with a driving layup and Kaan added one from downtown to get within 15-32. But Hervelle nailed another triple and Blagota Sekulic and Michalis Pelekanos followed with easy back-to-back layups to reinforce who was in control and build a 24-point lead. Fenerbahce called yet another timeout, as its offense has collapsed without Solomon on court. Vidmar come off the bench and hit a jump hook and Turkcan added a baseline jumper, but Lopez buried a triple off the dribble. Madrid kept following its game plan, with aggressive man-to-man defense and enough patience on offense to find outside shots. Kutluay woke up the crowd with a corner three-pointer, but Hervelle matched that at the other end. Vidmar kept pacing Fener with a tip-in, but free throws by Mumbru and a jump hook from Sekulic kept Madrid way ahead, 26-48. Vidmar scored again and Oguz Savas banked in a short shot, but Madrid, which made 7-of-9 threes in the first two periods, still led 31-48 at halftime.

Hervelle stayed on fire early in the second half, as he buried a three-pointer to silence the crowd. Fenerbahce now tried an offensive lineup with Kaan at point guard, but Madrid kept dominating the game with outstanding defense. Smith stepped up with another one from downtown, which Turkcan erased with a three-point play. With its team down by 20, the Fenerbahce fans were trying to lift their guys, but a put-back dunk by an unstoppable Hervelle kept Madrid fully in charge. The visitors kept powering the offensive boards with Hervelle and Papadopoulos, but a big triple by Kaan got Fener within 41-58. Smith answered from downtown and Mumbru added back-to-back fast break layups for a 43-65 Madrid lead. Kaan insisted with two more three-pointers while Kutluay joined the three-point festival, causing Madrid to call timeout at 52-65. The visitors were now struggling to score, while Turkcan took over with a power layup and Kann capped a 14-0 run with yet another triple that got Fenerbahce within single digits, 57-65. Smith answered from downtown to give Madrid some fresh air, 57-68, after three quarters.

Alex Mumbru - Real MadridFenerbahce found a go-to guy in Turkcan, who followed a basket with a critical triple that brought his team back in the game, 62-68. Madrid kept struggling to score, while Onan fed Kutluay for an easy basket that got the hosts even closer, 64-68. Madrid called timeout and instantly improved its offense, as Mumbru buried one from downtown for a 64-71 edge with 7 minutes to go. Tunceri stepped up with a driving layup, as Fenerbahce now had troubles in offense with Turkcan resting on the bench. Vidmar set the crowd on fire with a huge dunk that Lopez erased with a driving basket. Madrid had regained its momentum in defense while Hamilton fed Lopez for an easy layup, good for a 66-77 Madrid lead. Turkcan tried to get Fenerbahce back in the game but he did not find much help around. With Bullock unavailable, Madrid tried twin playmakers with Lopez and Tunceri on court. Savas drew a foul but made just 1 of 2 free throws whle Tunceri buried a triple that sealed the outcome, 69-80, already in the final 2 minutes. Fenerbahce kept trying quick shots without much success, as a three-pointer by Kutluay happened to be too little, too late.

Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Because of the absence of our point guard, Willie Solomon, we had 9 turnovers just in the first quarter and this was more than the worst. We were badly organised in this quarter and that caused us to play from 20 points behind against Real Madrid. We were challenging against a very good and tough opponent and they denied our efforts of coming back in the game with their talent and experience. Despite going 23 points down, we challenged very well but it was too much to handle. Anyway, I'm really happy about the way my team played in the second half. That was what can I expect from a young team against a very good opponent."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"First of all, I have to say that Istanbul is a great basketball city and I always like to play in this city in front of the excellent basketball fans. The fans in Istanbul add extra taste to the games and I always prefer to play for those kind of fans instead of vacant arenas. In the Euroleague, the opening matches are always hard and its even harder for the home teams. Before we came here, we watched the Presidents' Cup game of Fenerbahce Ulker against Efes Pilsen and were really impressed the way they played. It was an excellent performance of Fenerbahce, which made us a little stressed. But it was a good chance for us to have Fenerbahce playing without Willie Solomon. At the beginning of the match, we didn't let Fenerbahce organise its offense. We put on big pressure and had a respectable difference at the end of the first quarter. We were able to keep the advantage until the end of the game. We came here with full of problems of injury and tiredness. But we motivated ourselves very well, challenged very well and deserved to win."

Players

MRSIC, DAMIR
Fenerbahce Ulker
"When you start a game in a disastrous way like we started, there's not any opportunity to come back. We really had a terrible first quarter, full of mistakes. But starting near the end of the first half, we did everything we could to turn the game back around. We reduced the difference to four points, but Real Madrid responded very well in the last couple of minutes with their experiance. I believe that we can do much better in the next games. But the first thing we have to do is to forget about this game."
TUNCERI, KEREM
Real Madrid
"We had a very good start to the game. We were very good in defense, forced the opponent into turnovers and played with a high percentage on offense to create a big gap between us and Fenerbahce Ulker. But of course, Fenerbahce has very good sharpshooters and this is why they came back from 20 points down to even the game. But we responded and still stand with the advantage of being also a very good team, challenged very well in those critical moments and deserved the win. And to start the season with an away win feels so good."
