THE TAKE

Two teams eyeing a spot in the Final Four since they met on opening night of the season will start settling the matter face-to-face when Tau Ceramica hosts Olympiacos Piraeus in Game 1 of their best-of-three Quarterfinal Playoffs series on Tuesday at Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, Spain. Tau is looking to advance to its third straight Final Four, however the team has seen its title bid end in each of the last two years - first in the title game, then in the semifinals - against the coach now on the Olympiacos sidelines, Pini Gershon. The teams split a pair of regular-season meetings early on in Group A, with each team winning at home. But they have undergone significant changes since then. Tau has been red hot, winning its last eight games by an average margin of 19.3 points while undergoing a coaching change as four-time Euroleague champion coach Bozidar Maljkovic took over the bench last month. Olympiacos, which fought off some serious competition to reach the quarterfinals, will finally have sharpshooter Arvydas Macijauskas in uniform after he missed most of the season with a torn Achilles' tendon. Ironically, Macijauskas's last Euroleague game was the 2005 title game, when he played for Tau and lost to Gershon. Olympiacos took the first meeting between these teams by 97-78 as Alex Acker erupted for 25 points and 13 rebounds in his Euroleague debut. Tau won 89-74 in December as Serkan Erdogan came off the bench for 24 points. One of the biggest factors in this series could be the homecourt advantage that Tau has worked so long and hard to attain. Tau has won a Euroleague record 27 straight home games dating to January 2005. On the floor, key matchups will take place in the paint, where Tau forward Luis Scola, the all-time leading Euroleague scorer, center Tiago Splitter and chief reserve Kaya Peker will square off against a deep Red frontline that includes Andrija Zizic, Ioannis Bouroussis, Sofoklis Schortsianitis and Sam Hoskin. Scola has struggled against Olympiacos so far this season, averaging just 9 points on 35.7% shooting and 2.5 rebounds – far below his season averages. Tau will need to keep an eye on Olympiacos playmaker Scoonie Penn, who could be even more dangerous alongside Macijauskas, while solving Acker, not to mention reserve Henry Domercant. Tau boasts a multi-faceted backcourt with the likes of Zoran Planinic, Pablo Prigioni, Igor Rakosevic, Erdogan and Fred House. There is no questioning the talent of these two teams and the final result could come down to execution. Tau may have a slight edge in experience, while Olympiacos has perhaps added motivation to reach its first Final Four since 1999 in its own town. Either way, expect 40 minutes of great basketball before a winner can be decided in Vitoria.

Quotes Head Coaches

MALJKOVIC, BOZIDAR
Tau Ceramica
"It's always better to play with the homecourt advantage, but the past tells us it's not the most important thing. Fans will help us, for sure, but what is most important is to play well. I want my team playing the same basketball we played so far. We can make it, but we can't do it playing poorly, despite the homecourt advantage. It's true you can feel anxious before this matchup, but we count on very experienced players who have played these kinds of games before. I hope we will play without nerves and confident in our possibilities, but in case nerves arise, the coach must take over to avoid that. Olympiacos is a high-level team. They have a deep roster, they count on very experienced U.S. players like Domercant and Penn. They are club with a long tradition in European competitions, with pride. They showed how good they are by playing nice games in Moscow and Belgrade, where they were able to beat Partizan by 20 points, which is not easy at all. They play better on the road than they do at home, so we must beware."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"Tau is the favorite, since they have the home advantage. But there are many times that this advantage can be a disadvantage because the pressure is too high for the home team. In 72 hours, things can change for one team or another. In these games, the winning team is the one that stays calm and makes the fewest turnovers. We are going to Vitoria to steal the victory, but even if we make that happen there, nothing will be over. The qualification goes to the team that wins the series, not Game 1."

"It was a bit complicated to get ready for the playoff against Olympiacos so far because we had to share our preparation time between domestic competition and the Euroleague. But now we have two days to get ready for it. I don't think they are weaker inside, despite all the injury trouble they are going through lately. They count on very good players inside and I'm sure they will be able to hurt us in the paint. I hope the games won't be too different to what we saw when they visited Vitoria in the first round. I hope that there are no big surprises, especially on our home court. We all know they will play a very tough defense, so we must be ready to play 20-second offenses."
BOUROUSIS, IOANNIS
Olympiacos
"Many people have hurried to doom us to failure, saying that we have no hope to qualify over Tau Ceramica. It is a given that the Spaniards have the home advantage and they are definitely a good team. They have the upper hand, but they will have to sweat to get the ticket to the Final Four. I don't know if the interruption of the Greek League will have positive or negative affects on our team. I do know that we have to give our best in these series if we want to make it to the Final Four. If we play the way we can, one player for the other like we have done in all our big victories, then I believe we will make it."
Igor Rakocevic - Tau Ceramica Igor Rakocevic put on a shooting exhibition to lead Tau Vitoria to an 84-59 win over Olympiacos Piraeus in Game 1 of the best-of-three Quarterfinal Playoffs on Tuesday at the Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, Spain. Rakocevic was 5-of-6 from downtown on his way to 24 points to bring his team within one win of the club's third straight Final Four appearance. The win also extended Tau's record home-court winning streak to 28 as it won its ninth straight overall. Tau seemed in total control from the end of the first period, despite the return to action of Olympiacos shooter Arvydas Macijauskas, who missed the first eight months of the season with an injury. Serkan Erdogan added 13 and Mirza Teletovic 10, while Luis Scola had 8 points and 9 rebounds and Zoran Planinic posted 8 points, 4 assists and 4 steals. Henry Domercant led the Reds with 13 and Sam Hoskin had 11.

The visitors came out strong in the early going as Panagiotis Vassilopoulos opened fire with a three-pointer to get the Reds ahead. Although Tiago Splitter solved a bad offense with a layup, Tau seemed to be too anxious to play its game. Ioannis Bouroussis extended the lead to 2-5 with a layup, but Rakocevic was about to change that. He tied the game with a three from the corner after 3 minutes. Andrija Zizic came to the rescue with another inside basket and both teams then went scoreless for the following 2 minutes. The intensity was growing with each play, especially after Scola and Bouroussis faced off and Scooni Penn and Pablo Prigioni did the same few seconds later. Rakocevic took over after Tau coach Boza Maljkovic’s first timeout and a triple and five straight free throws ended the drought and returned the lead to Tau at 13-7 with 3 minutes to go. Olympiacos coach Pini Gershon reacted quickly by putting in big man Sofoklis Schortsianitis and then Macijauskas returned to action after an 8-month period on the sidelines. Baby Shaq dunked the first ball he got, but Rakocevic answered again from downtown for an 18-9. Splitter kept rocking inside to give Tau its first double-digit lead, but it didn’t last long as Schortsianitis and Hoskin brought Olympiacos within 20-12 from the free throw line to end the first period.

Alex Acker - OlympiacosTau at the start of the second period and went scoreless for the first 2 minutes, but Olympiacos could not rally. Baskets by Alex Acker and Domercant helped reduce the gap to 22-18 after 14 minutes, but Scola scored his first 2 points from the free-throw line and Erdogan followed him with a nice layup in traffic to keep Tau's lead safe. Bouroussis committed his third foul few seconds later and Sergi Vidal's was able to increase the hosts' lead to 28-18 midway through the second quarter. Gershon decided to go with a small lineup as Vassilopoulos replaced Bouroussis at power forward, but he changed his mind rather quickly and got Schortsianitis back on court. But Baby Shaq needed only few seconds to also pick up his third foul. Rakocevic extended the margin by 2 more to cap a perfect first half from the free throw line, but that was not enough to make Olympiacos raise the white flag. Zizic made a basket-plus-foul play that was followed by the first two points by Macijauskas to keep the Reds alive entering the last minute. However Planinic, and especially Rakocevic, stepped up. Rakocevic hit his fourth three-pointer to extend lead to 38-25 and, although Hoskin answered him inside, Peker tipped the ball in at the buzzer for a 40-28 halftime Tau lead.

Both squads started at full throttle after intermission, playing fast and intense, but defense still prevailed over offense and prevented the score from growing. Domercant and Rakocevic answered each other in the early going, as both teams averaged a point per minute. Hoskin had Olympiacos's response from inside, but that seemed to cause Tau to explode via the Planinic/Teletovic duo. They combined for 6 points in a row to boost the hosts' lead to 48-32. Gershon called an urgent timeout, but nothing changed after the break as Rakocevic missed his first three-point attempt. However he did grab the second chance and fix the mistake with his fifth three. The Reds tried to respond, but Tau answered every spark with an incredible defensive effort that forced Olympiacos to turn the ball over too often. Tau increased its lead through quick fastbreaks to kill the visitors' hopes. Fred House ended the third quarter by putting Tau in safe position at 59-40.

Mirza Teletovic - Tau CeramicaThings got even worst for Olympiacos in the beginning of the last period as Planinic scored a layup, House followed him with a three, and Planinic made a 6-meter jumper to raise the difference to 66-40. The Reds seemed bedazzled and Gershon tried to change that by switching to zone defense. That slowed down Tau a bit, but it proved unhelpful as the main problem for the Reds were at the offensive end. Despite a 2-7 run that reduced the gap to 68-47 midway through the last quarter, nobody had already a doubt about the name of the winner. The hosts called for a timeout to kill off any last Olympiacos momentum and it worked fine as the lead was increased again to 75-49 with 3 minutes to go. With the outcome not in doubt, both teams faced the last minutes with the clear target of avoiding injuries and saving energy for the next game on Thursday.

Head Coaches

MALJKOVIC, BOZIDAR
Tau Ceramica
"First of all I want to thank our supporters for what they did tonight. When you feel such a big atmosphere when you are down on the court, it's easier to play good. Once again I have to say that these fans deserve big things. We played good defense, very good defense in crucial moments. We knew we should improve that and we accomplished the job. We must keep improving this. When a team like Olympiacos scores only 59 points, it means that the other team played great defense. We tried to share playing minutes among all the players."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"We played bad tonight. Our performance was not at the expected level, especially when they took a good advantage. They defeated us by a wide margin. We must to improve a lot in the next 48 hours to be able to win the game and tie the series. We cannot make deep changes in that short time, so we must focus to achieve the goals we defined before the series started. If we are able to do that, we will come back to Vitoria. If not, TAU will make it to the Final Four on Thursday. It doesn't matter if it was a 1-point or a 20-point defeat. They shot 41% from the field, although we didn't play good defense. I think we won't find a better chance to beat Tau here than we found today."

Players

HOUSE, FRED
Tau Ceramica
"I didn't expect such a big difference tonight. We expected a tight game, maybe decided by a point or 2, but everything went fine for us and we achieved a great victory. We played an excellent game, especially on defense and we are on the right track to get back to the Final Four. It would be the third time for the club, but the first for me and I'm very excited."
MACIJAUSKAS, ARVYDAS
Olympiacos
"My feelings are not very good, despite coming back to competition. We didn't have any chance to win the game. It's too early for me, since I only practiced for a week with team and it's not enough because I miss a lot of things on the court. We shot poorly tonight and had low percentages. We expected a tough game and for sure we knew we could lose tonight, but it's not important to win by big difference at this stage. If we can defeat them by only a point in Athens everything will be okay. We must focus on doing what our coach asked; that is playing more aggressive both in offense and defense."
