THE TAKE

Olympiacos will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts Group B co-leader Lietuvos Rytas on Wednesday in Piraeus, Greece. Olympiacos (4-6) has dropped its last two games against the other co-leaders, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Efes Pilsen, while L. Rytas (7-3) lost to Barcelona at home last week, ending a seven-game winning streak. When these teams last met in Vilnius, Lithuania last November, forward Mindaugas Lukauskis came off the bench for a season-high 12 points to lead L. Rytas to a 78-67 win. L. Rytas will be extra motivated for this game, knowing that a victory will make it the first team in Group B to qualify for the Top 16, no small feat for a team making its debut in the competition. L. Ryts will also be anxious to bounce back from last week's defeat and keep a share of first place. Led by former L. Rytas coach Jonas Kazlauskas, Olympiacos should be prepared for much of what its opponents throw at it. The recent edition of forward Matthew Freije adds to a solid Olympiacos frontcourt. Andrija Zizic (9.8 ppg., 6 rpg.), who had his best game off the season two weeks ago, has become a threat to score every time he touches the ball. After struggling from the field in the first two weeks, Zizic has made 64.4% of his two-pointers since, while sinking an amazing 27 of 28 free throws in his last four games. When Zizic needs a break, big Sofoklis Schortsanitis (9.8 ppg. in 18 min.) usually gets the call and the ball. Both will have to prepare for Robertas Javtokas (10.6 ppg., 8.5 rpg., 1.4 bpg.), who lead a group of L. Rytas big men that includes Haris Mujezinovic (10.5 ppg.) and Matt Nielsen (9.6 ppg.). In his last three games, Javtokas is averaging eye-popping numbers: 13.3 points on 68.2 percent shooting, 13.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks. His only real weakness is free throw shooting (39.7%). Veteran playmakers Tyus Edney of Olympiacos and Roberts Stelmahers of L. Rtyas, who is expected back after leaving last week's game with an ankly injury, will engage in a battle for control of the tempo. Edney (11.3 ppg., 4 apg.) is joined by swingmen Quincy Lewis (10.2 ppg.) and Nikos Hatzis (9 ppg.) to give Olympiacos a backcourt that can run and shoot on the perimeter. For L. Rytas, steady Stelmahers (10.7 ppg., 44.7% 3FG, 3.8 apg.) gets the ball to Fred House (13.6 ppg., 2.3 spg.) and Simas Jasaitis (10.1 ppg.), who also was hurt last week but has travelled to Piraeus in anticipation of playing. Olympiacos is 4-1 at home this season, but this week's visitors to Peace and Friendship Stadium have proven to be true road warriors, going 4-1 away from Vilnius this season. The key to this game could come from the matchup between Zizic and Javtokas. If the Olympiacos big man finds a way to slow down his L. Rytas counterpart, Olympiacos will be that much closer to a crucial home win.

Olympiacos took an important step in its quest to make the Top 16 from Group B by edging visiting Lietuvos Rytas 65-63 in the Pireaus, Greece on Wednesday. Olympiacos improved to 5-6 in the Group B standings, while L.Rytas, which would have reached the Top 16 with a victory, dropped to 7-4 and what will be a share of second place. Nikos Barlos led the winners with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Manolis Papamakarios added 13 points and Quincy Lewis 12 for Olympiacos. Matt Nielsen posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds for L.Rytas. Roberts Stelmahers added 14 points and Tomas Delininkaitis 10 for the guests, who outrebounded their opponents by 31-43 but committed 16 turnovers. A put-back layup by Simas Jasaitis gave L.Rytas its last lead at 43-45. Olympiacos held slim leads after that, and when Stelmahers brought the guests within 64-62 in the final seconds, Tyus Edney preserved the victory with free throws for the hosts.

Nielsen opened the scoring for L. Rytas, but soon Olympiacos guards Edney and Papamakarios drove to the basket to put the Reds in front 4-2. Both teams chose pressure defense on the perimeter and forced turnovers from each other. Fred House and Javtokas scored inside for the visitors but Papamakarios and Barlos answered in the same way to keep Olympiacos ahead 9-7. A nice pick-and-roll from Lewis and Andrija Zizic mad it 11-7, before Stelmahers and Nielsen landed a triple each to vault L. Rytas into the lead at 10-13. The visitors liked that trend, and soon Simas Jasaitis and Delininkaitis popped from the arc, too, as their team led 15-19. Big man Sofoklis Scortsianitis took offensive responsibility for Olympiacos, but L. Rytas quickly went to a zone defense to prevent passes inside. The Reds found and alternative on the perimeter, where Lewis drilled a three-pointer to cut the difference to 18-22 after 10 minutes.

Both teams started the second quarter playing zones, and while Olympiacos missed more open three-point-shots - the hosts were 1-for-8 so far from the arc - L. Rytas found baskets in the paint by Stelmahers and Haris Mujezinovic to push ahead 18-26. Nikos Hatzis made free throws and Edney an easy layup to make it 22-26, but soon L. Rytas reacted with a triple by Mindaugas Lukauskis and a good fadeaway jumper by Nielsen for a 24-31 edge. The guests found many second opportunities from the 10 offensive rebounds they had already collected as part of a 22-10 advantage on the boards so far. But L. Rytas did not find the way to get full advantage on the scoreboard, so when Barlos stepped up for Olympiacos at the end of the half, the difference was trimmed again, to 30-33 after 20 minutes.

L. Rytas started the second half in exactly the same fashion, by collecting offensive rebounds. But Olympiacos was the team to get connected with a good triple by Lewis and a nice layup by Barlos to tie 35-35. Stelmahers kept his nerve and popped in a three-pointer, but Barlos remained the go-to guy for Olympiacos and answered from the arc. Jasaitis dunked on the baseline, but Papamakarios got a basket-plus-free throw for a new Olympiacos lead, 41-40. Delininkaitis put L. Rytas ahead again with a three-pointer, but the game's momentum had now changed toward Olympiacos as Matt Freije and Lewis scored to put the hosts ahead again 49-47 after three quarters.

Even while L. Rytas kept adding to its rebound collection to start the final quarter, Olympiacos pushed ahead 50-47 on a free throw by Barlos. Javtokas scored his team's first field goal after 6 minutes of nothing but free throws, and then a triple by Stelmahers tied it up 51-51. Lewis stepped up to give Olympiacos the lead back with 5 minutes left before Papamakarios and Nielsen exchanged triples for a 56-55 home lead. Edney returned to the floor to nail a crucial three-pointer from the corner that made it 59-55, and after free throws by Delininkaitis, Papamakarios fed Zizic for a 61-57 Olympiacos lead with 1:30 left. Nielsen cut that margin in half with free throws, and Reinaldas Seibutis hit only 1 of 2 for the Reds, Barlos was there to get a big offensive rebound. Next, Barlos missed both of his free throw opportunities, and with the scoreboard showing 62-59, L. Rytas tried 3 open shots from the same spot behind the arc. Jasaitis twice and Delinikaitis once did not find the target and Seibutis put the Reds up 64-59. As such, a late triple by Stelmahers made it close, but Olympiacos held onto its fifth home win in six games and renewed chances to reach the Top 16.

Head Coaches

KAZLAUSKAS, JONAS
Olympiacos
"It was a difficult game for us for two reasons. First, we had the pressure to win. That's normal, but also tough to handle. Not everybody is ready to handle this pressure. Second, we faced problems with injuries. Agadakos and Vassilopoulos were sidelined and Schortsianitis missed three days of practice. Considering all these facts, I am really happy for this victory over a very good team. Freije needs time to adapt and I am thinking of arranging some friendlies to help him. Considering our poor away record, I have to say that we played well at Efes Pilsen and Maccabi, but the wins did not come."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Lietuvos Rytas
"Congratulations to Mr. Kazlauskas. His team deserved the win tonight. We played solid defense as usual, but we were bad on offense. We did not have the balance between the inside and outside game and that cost us a lot. We missed many open shots from the perimeter and finally I had to tell my players to stop shooting as they did not have the confidence anymore. We will practice and come back better in the future. Concerning a possible player addition we will take one for sure, but he is not going to be a magician or Michael Jordan, so we have to learn to play as a team."

Players

BARLOS, NIKOS
Olympiacos
"Despite the recent injuries and absences we had we managed to win tonight. This is a great victory for us, that improves our standings in the group and increases much our possibilities to earn a berth in the Euroleague's Top 16. We stayed alive with this win. Things would have been easier for us already if we had won in Instanbul against Efes, but we missed a really good opportunity. Now, we will search for our first road win."
NIELSEN, MATT
Lietuvos Rytas
"To be honest we feel disappointed for tonight's loss. We know that we didn't play as good as we could. We had many second opportunities, but even that did not work out. We faced problems offensively. We did not find the hole! Olympiacos is a very tough team, especially at home. We had the confidence to come in and win, as we had some good road wins so far. But, we didn't make it."
