THE TAKE

Anwil Wloclawek makes its third straight appearance in the ULEB Cup this season, opening up at home in Group D against newcomer Azovmash Mariupol. Coach Ales Pipan's side is led by Gerrod Henderson, Alex Dunn and Patrick Okafor. Anwil has shown flashes in the early going in the Polish League and Pipan will try to put it all together for some ULEB Cup success. Azovmash makes its ULEB Cup debut, but it has had plenty of success recently, winning four Ukranian League titles since 2002 and losing to Akasvayu Girona in the 2007 FIBA EuroCup final. Rimas Girskis has guided his team to a strong start this season and has melded together a group around veteran leaders Tyus Edney, Panagiotis Liadelis and Yahor Meshcharakou.

A back-and-forth defensive thriller full of star turns marked this opening game in Group D, and when the dust had settled at Hala Mistrzow in Wloclawek, Poland, visiting Azovmash Mariupol had a 66-70 road victory over Anwil Wlocawek. The ULEB Cup first-timers from Ukraine gave Anwil, entering its third season in the competition, all it could handle on its own floor. Anwil jumped ahead by as many as 9 points in the first quarter, but Azovmash turned that around in the second and fought point for point until the finish. Experienced scorer Panagiotis Liadellis was the big gun for Azovmash with 20 points from the perimeter, while Serhiy Lishchuk put on a show inside with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks. Another veteran, Tyus Edney, added 13 points for the winners. Gerrod Henderson posted a huge double-double of 17 points and 11 assists to lead Anwil. Zbigniew Bialek followed with 16 points, while Andrzej Pluta and Alex Dunn added 11 each.

Azovmash got behind its big-name veterans, Edney and Liadelis, to take its first lead at 2-6 shortly after tipoff. Lishchik raised that to 5-10 for the visitors before Anwil struck back with 17 of the game's next 20 points. Bialek and Pluta led that charge with three-pointers each while Henderseon dished assists left and right as Anwil pulled ahead 22-16 after 10 minutes. Azovmash had already begun its turnaround, however, and throughout the second quarter used Lishchuk's control of the inside to flip the scoreboard until it was ahead 36-37 at the half. The third quarter was just as even, with Azovmash leading by one more point, 52-54, after 30 minutes. That set up a dramatic final quarter, during which any point was hard to come by, but Azovmash squeaked out enough to hold on for victory.

Head Coaches

PIPAN, ALES
Anwil Wloclawek
"It's hard to say something about this game right after its end. We didn't play well in the offense. Azovmash for over 70 percent of time used zone defense. We have spent a lot of time practisinig our style of play against zone. What is more, we have messed up too many open shots. And if you do that, you can forget about the victory."
BRAZYS, ALGIRDAS
Azovmash Mariupol
"We are satisfied with our debut in the ULEB Cup. Win in a first game is a good sign for the rest of the competition. We could use Robert Archibald who suffered an injury during a game in the Ukrainian league. Tonight our key player was Tyus Edney, who played despite the fever. He showed big heart."

Players

HENDERSON, GERROD
Anwil Wloclawek
"We came with energy. We played well until the opponent used zone defense. This stopped us. We could execute our set-plays. Our long distance shot was also useless, because we missed too many of them."
MESHCHARAKOU, YAHOR
Azovmash Mariupol
"We knew that it would be a tough game for us. We do not know each other well, because on our team there is nine new players and a new coach. So fo us it is a very big win. We could not have dreamed a better start in our debut in ULEB Cup."
