THE TAKE

Winless Ovarense Aerosoles hopes to just grab a victory in Group B as it hosts FMP. Coach Luis Magalhaes's Ovarense fell to 0-5 after making things close in the end but losing at home to Köln 99ers. The Portugal side held Köln to just 42% shooting from the field but only hit 42% themselves. The difference came at the foul stripe as Ovarense made just 15-of-23 (65%) of its free throws. Shooting guard Ben Reed provided plenty of spark with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in his first game with Ovarsense off the bench. Expect Magalhaes to incorporate Reed even more into the offense while point guard Cordell Henry continues to be a riddle - averaging 2 points over the past two games after hitting for nearly 25 through three contests. Any chances of the elimination round will have to start with a victory at home against FMP, which won the game at home against Ovarense in Week One by 10 points. Coach Vlada Vukoicic's Serb team lost its fourth straight game last week at home against Ventspils to fall to 1-4. FMP forced 20 turnovers but could not take advantage of them as the Latvian offense shot 56% from the floor while FMP struggled to just 41% shooting. Center Predrag Samardziski was held to just 9 points - 8.6 below his average coming into the game. Guard Nemanja Protic hit for 10 points and power forward Dragon Labovic had 12 points off the bench. But it was not nearly enough. Vukoicic finally made a switch - and a major one, in releasing three players (starting center Ivan Zigeranovic and guards Djordje Micic and Nenad Stefanovic) while promoting up five players from its junior squad - Dejan Musli, who was MVP of the U16 European Championship, Marko Gacinovic, Stefan Zivanovic, Nikola Markovic and Ivan Smiljanic. Vukoicic knows his team must get out of its funk if it wants to save its ULEB Cup campaign. Stopping its four-game losing streak would help.

Dragan Labovic amassed an impressive double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds as BC FMP topped Ovarense Aerosoles 70-80 in Group B on Tuesday night. FMP improved to 2-4, rekindling its slim hopes to advance to the elimination rounds, even though both of its wins have come against the Portuguese champs. FMP hosts Elan Chalon next week. Meanwhile Ovarense Aerosoles remains winless at the bottom of the table and will travel to Latvia to take on Ventspils next. FMP used a 15-0 second-period run to take control and Ovarense never seriously threatened after that. Zoran Erceg added 18 points for FMP and Djordje Micic scored 13, as the club netted 11 of 22 from downtown. Ben Reed and Cordell Henry posted 14 points apiece for Ovarense, Gregory Stempin added 10 and Graham Brown collected 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Brown gave Ovarense an 8-6 lead from the foul line early in the first quarter before Stempin from mid-range increased it to 15-12. Micic hit from downtown to give FMP a slim 15-17 cushion. The first quarter ended tied at 17-17 thanks to Elvis Evora’s basket assisted by Reed. Cordell made it 20-17, but that’s when FMP erupted, going on an amazing 15-0 run highlighted by 8 points from Erceg. Cordell and Brown helped the hosts get within 30-37 by halftime. Ivan Zigeranovic extended the difference to 30-39 coming back from the intermission. Cordell led Ovarense closer and after Labovic and Rui Da Mota exchanged three pointers, the hosts cut the gap to 39-43 at the midway point of the quarter. Stempin hit a three get to 44-46, but the answer from FMP was 7 points in a row from Labovic to get back to a double-figure margin with two minutes left in the period. Nuno Cortez scored from mid-range to make it 47-57 after 30 minutes. Reed tried to get his side closer from downtown, but FMP was in form as Covic and Erceg hit from outside to keep the visitors up 50-63. Reed still managed to get Ovarense to 58-65, but Erceg again stopped their run as FMP cruised to victory.
