THE STAKES

Valencia and Oostende faced off in the first edition of the ULEB Cup in 2002-2003, won by the Spanish side, which went all the way that year. Both teams lost their opener so the pressure is on here to grab a win and get back on track. Valencia just added former All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter to strengthen its inside game. As always the fans at la Fonteta will be raucous, which could give the home squad an edge.

THE TAKE

Valencia has tremendous power under the glass, as Serhoy Lischuk and Nik Caner-Medely produced 35 points in the opener. Now with Splitter on board, Telenet’s Chris Booker and Dragisa Drobnjak will have their hands full. The duel between Rafa Martinez and Dusan Djordjevic, both excellent shooters and scorers, will take center stage, and the matchup at point guard between Stefan Markovic and Jason Rich will also be crucial. The hosts have to cut back on turnovers compared with last week, and both teams need to lift their shooting percentages.

Quotes Head Coaches

OLMOS, FRANCISCO
Valencia Basket
"We start our Eurocup way at home. We know we come from a bad defeat in the opening week which, in such a short regular season, makes it mandatory to win all the home games and try to steal a road win to accomplish our first goal in this Eurocup: the Last 16. We are aware of our physical problems. These injuries must make the group stronger knowing that it is important to add wins being who we are. Oostende is a team with lots of offensive power. Their coach played in Spain and knows our league. They also have quality players like Kennedy Winston or Dusan Sakota, who has taken a step forward to lead this team."
JAUMIN, JEAN MARC
Telenet Oostende
"Valencia Basket is a candidate for the final victory in the Eurocup, especially after having signed Tiago Splitter. It will not be easy. This team has a roster full of talented players on every position. I think we are coming to Valencia on a bad moment, just after they lost the opening game against Asvel. The have no margin for error. This does however not mean that we come to Valencia as a tourist. We come here to play a good game and to try to make it difficult for them at home. We lost our first game after leading by 12 points in second half, due to a bad shot percentage. We know its is going to be tough but not impossible."

"I think Valencia Basket is a very strong team that plays fast and dynamic basketball. They have very fast guards that can press the ball and create in offense, and big men that can run the floor very well. Now with the addition of Splitter in their roster, they have another dimension in their game. My opinion is that the first step for us to have a successful game on Tuesday is to believe that we can win, and go with that mentality to the game. We need to forget about last week against Lukoil, and focus on playing our game with no pressure but with 100 percent motivation and concentration, and I think we could have a great game."
Tiago Splitter - Valencia Basket (photo Valencia Basket)Valencia Basket registered its first win in Group D by edging Telenet BC Oostende 75-62 at home on Tuesday. Valencia ties with Asvel Basket for second place at 1-1 each, one win away from undefeated leader Lukoil Academic. Oostende dropped to 0-2 and needs to bounce back right away to keep its chances alive. Tiago Splitter paced the winners with 15 points on 6-of-6 two-pointers. Nando De Colo added 11 while Nik Caner-Medley had 10 for Valencia. Jason Rich had 16 points for Oostende while Kennedy Winston added 11. Caner-Medley and Splitter dominated the paint in the opening quarter to make Valencia get a 19-16 margin after 10 minutes. Florent Pietrus shined in the second quarter, leading a 7-0 run that gave Valencia the lead for good, 35-27. A layup by Splitter fixed the halftime score at 40-31. Oostende rallied after the break and a three-pointer by Dusan Sakota completed the guests' comeback, 48-49, late in the third quarter. Rafa Martinez and Serhiy Lishchul fueled an 8-0 run that gave Valencia a safe lead, 65-56, and Splitter sealed the outcome in crunch time.

Rich got Oostende going with a jumper that Rodrigo San Miguel bettered than with a three-pointer for a 3-2 Valencia lead. Chris Booker sank a jumper but back-to-back layups by Lishchuk and De Colo gave Valencia a 7-4 lead. Rich struck from downtown and Dusan Djordjevic matched Caner-Medley's basket with a layup to tie it at 9-9. Rich sank his second triple but Caner-Medley followed a jumper with a dunk to restore a 13-12 Valencia edge. Splitter scored twice in the paint and Caner-Medley added a layup but Winston and Dragisa Drobnjak kept Oostende within 19-16 after 10 minutes. San Miguel and Winston free throws early in the fourth quarter but back-to-back layups by Quentin Serron and Booker put the guests back ahead, 21-22. Splitter and Florent Pietrus stepped up for Valencia but Booker and Djordjevic kept Oostence as close as 28-27. Rihards Kuksiks and Pietrus fueled a 7-0 run that gave Valencia some fresh air, 35-27. Winston made 3-of-4 free throws that Martinez matched with a bomb from downtown. Another easy basket by Splitter boosted the hosts' lead to 40-31 at halftime.

De Colo shined with an off-balance three-point play right after the break but a layup by Drobnjak and a three-pointer by Veselin Petrovic gave Oostende some hope at 43-36. Booker scored off a steal in an 1-13 Oostende run in which Rich had 4 points and Dusan Sakota added a layup to tie the game at 44-44. Caner-Medley tried to change things with free throws but a red hot Rich matched that with a long jumper. Valencia kept missing open shots but free throws by Kuksiks put the hosts back ahead, 48-46. A three-pointer by Sakota, however, completed the guests' comeback, 48-49. Kuksiks answered from downtown but a layup by Dusan Katnic tied it, 51-51, after 30 minutes. San Miguel and Winston traded jumper early in the fourth quarter and a backdoor layup by De Colo helped Valencia to get a 55-53 edge. Lishchuk shined with a put-back layup but a three-point play by Katnic brought Oostende within 57-56. Pietrus scored again and a jumper by Martinez gave Valencia some fresh air at 61-56. Lishchuk dunked it and a layup by Martinez broke the game open, 65-56. Winston nailed a jumper that Splitter matched with a jump hook. Splitter followed free throws with an easy basket that sealed the outcome, 71-60, as Oostende never recovered.

Head Coaches

OLMOS, FRANCISCO
Valencia Basket
"In such a short regular season, another loss would have made everything much more complicated. Considering our circunstances and injuries, we had good moments in this game in the second and fourth quarter, playing with high intensity on defense. Stefan (Markovic) was sidelined today and Nik (Caner-Medley) was not 100% ready but we couldn't afford to sit him out. We took a step forwards in the second quarter but played without rhythm after the break. I have to thank our fans for their support in the most decisive moment. We were more aggressive with a taller lineup and managed to get a win against a tough opponent. We had a good two-point percentage but missed shots from downtown, some of them very well selected. Oostende is a good team that took advantage by taking their guards to the low post against Rafa (Martinez) and Rodrigo (San Miguel). We hope to bring back some of our injured players for the upcoming games."
JAUMIN, JEAN MARC
Telenet Oostende
"Valencia is one of the favorite teams in the group and in the competition. My team fought until the last second, although we have a lack of experience that Valencia has, players like Splitter or Rafa Martínez. I’m happy with this game, but we needed 10 more minutes of concentration. The level of Valencia is higher than ours right now."

Players

SPLITTER, TIAGO
Valencia Basket
"It was very important to get a win today. We arrived to this game with many injured players and it was hard for us. That made thing game more difficult ofr us. I am still learning the team's systems and hope to help Valencia by going step by step."
WINSTON, KENNEDY
Telenet Oostende
“We’re definitely dissapointed about the game, the team worked really hard on this one, but we are hoping to do our best for the next Eurocup game."
