THE TAKE

CSU Asesoft is hoping to finish off its ULEB Cup campaign on a high note as it hosts Akasvayu Girona in Group C. Head coach Mladan Jojic's Asesoft all but dropped out of the running for the elimination round by losing at Galatasaray to fall to a 3-6 record. The Romanian side out-shot Galatasaray 48%-43% but committed 17 turnovers to Galatasaray's 13. Center Rashard Griffith collected 13 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks while shooting guard Arvydas Cepulis chipped in 12 points and 5 assists. Akasvayu Girona meanwhile has first place already locked up after knocking off Spirou Charleroi at home to improve to 7-2. Head coach Pedro Martinez's Girona shot 59% from the floor and held Spirou to just 5-of-27 from long range. Power forward Jackson Vroman had another strong game with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals, while guard Darryl Middleton had 16 points and center Marc Gasol chipped in 14 points. Martinez's Spanish team won Week 5 at home against Asesoft despite shooting just 40% from the floor and getting out-rebounded 37-30. Look for Girona to step it back up - despite being on the road.

Tomas Gaidamavicius - CSU Asesoft Five players scored in double figures as CSU Asesoft upset Akasvayu Girona at home 78-68 to finish off its Group C ULEB Cup campaign on a high note. Darius Hargrove paced the way with 18 points while Arvydas Cepulis scored 17 points for Asesoft, which finished at 4-6 - not quite good enough for one of the five best fourth-placed teams to reach the Final 32. Tomas Gaidamavicius added 14 points while DeAngelo Alexander had 11 points and Reggie Elliott chipped in 10 for the winners. Akasvayu Girona had already clinched first place coming into the game and finished with a 7-3 record. Jackson Vroman scored 25 points while Marc Gasol and Arriel McDonald both added 12 points.

Gasol gave Girona the first lead of the game before back-to-back baskets by Elliott for Asesoft. Vroman scored twice and Akasvayu went ahead 8-14 on McDonald's score. But Cepulis made three foul shots and Rashard Griffith's lay-up made it 13-14. Girona led 15-17 after one period. Cepulis gave Ploiesti the lead to start the second with a three-ball. And back-to-back triples by Cepulis and Hargrove completed a 15-2 start of the second period for a 30-19 advantage. Branko Cvetkovic temporarily stopped the bleeding with a long ball only to see Gaidamavicius answer with a trey of his own. Hargrove scored twice and the cushion was at 45-29 after another Cepulis long ball. Fernando San Emeterio hit the final basket of the half to cut the deficit to 45-31 at the break. Vroman's three-point play tipped off the third period and another Vroman score made it a nine-point game. Girona tried to chip into the lead but Gaidamavicius and Hargrove both scored 5 points in the period to remain ahead 58-48 going into the fourth. Vroman started the fourth and McDonald's long ball cut the deficit to 60-54. But Alexander hit back-to-back three-balls to re-establish a 10-point advantage. Another Vroman basket made it 70-63 but Hargrove and Alexander scored and Alexander's three-point play made it 76-65 with just more than a minute left. And that was plenty for Asesoft.
