THE TAKE

Benetton Fribourg is hoping to finish off its ULEB Cup season on a positive when it hosts Hapoel Galil Elyon in Group E. Head coach Damien Leyrolles's Fribourg dropped its fourth straight game, losing at Triumph Lyubertsy to drop to 3-6. The Swiss club, which still has very slim hopes of advancing as one of the fourth-placed teams, held Triumph to just 41% from the floor and won the rebound battle 39-37. But Fribourg made just 36% for the game and committed 24 turnovers in the loss. Power forward David Esterkamp had 18 points and 8 rebounds and center Marcus Sloan amassed 13 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. All told, four starters scored in double figures, but Leyrolles had to be disappointed with his bench, which did not score a single point. Fribourg will likely need its starters to carry the load again as it hopes to sweep Galil Elyon after six players scored in double figures in the Week 5 road victory. Hapoel Galil Elyon shot just 35% in that Week 5 loss. But Danny Franco's team comes into the game with a sense of relief after beating Buducnost at home to snap a five-game losing streak and improve to 2-7. The Israeli side shot a blistering 60% while holding Buducnost to just 45% from the floor and winning the rebound battle 30-24. Shooting guard Aaron Nixon tallied a team-high 19 points while small forward Cliff Brown had 17 points and 4 steals and shooting guard Gil Mossinson chipped in 16 points and 7 rebounds. Franco just wants his team to grab a final victory and put behind it a tough ULEB Cup campaign.

Hapoel Galil Elyon finished its ULEB Cup season strong with a 101-84 victory at Benetton Fribourg in Group E. Gil Mossinson's 24 points and 9 rebounds paced four players in double figures for Galil Elyon, which won its final two games to end with a 3-7 record. Aaron Nixon added 24 points and Jai Lamar Lewis chipped in 14 points and 9 rebounds while Yogev Ohayon had 12 points and 5 assists. Fribourg dropped to 3-7 despite 23 points from David Esterkamp. Damon Thorton added 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks while Harold Mrazek had 13 points, Marcus Sloan scored 11 and Tresor Quidome chipped in 10 points in a losing effort.

Esterkamp scored the scoring for Fribourg with a three-pointer and Quidome's long ball made it 6-2. Lewis's second hoop of the night gave Galil Elyon its first lead at 9-10. Two Thorton scores and two Esterkamp long-balls had Fribourg ahead 21-16. But Mossinson hit back-to-back baskets and Cliff Brown had four points as the guests went ahead 21-24. And Galil Elyon led 26-29 after Or Eytan's three-ball at the end of the first quarter. Brown's foul shot extended the lead, which grew to 30-37 after another Eytan long ball. But Thorton and Esterkamp both hit from downtown as Fribourg was within 40-42. And it was 42-47 at the break. Mossinson's basket and Aaron Nixon's triple gave the guests a 42-52 advantage. And it was still 50-58 after Brown's score. But Pascal Perrier-David and Esterkamp hit back-to-back from long range to even the game at 60-60. Mike Campbell knocked down a three-ball as Galil Elyon led 66-67 after three quarters. Avraham Ben Chimol tipped off the fourth before Eytan and Nixon hit from long range to begin opening a gap for the guests at 70-77. Mossinson scored eight straight points for Galil Elyon in building a 76-88 gap. Sloan brought the deficit back to 80-88, but Galil Elyon allowed just one basket in the final two minutes while Nixon and Ohayon combined for 9 points in that period to finish off the game.

Head Coaches

LEYROLLES, DAMIEN
Benetton Fribourg
"We didn't play tonight. The team of Galil was very offensive and they did a good game. The quality of our game was bad and we had no defense. I'm very disappointed. We have to be more consistent and more offensive. We have to dominate the game and we should defend harder."
FRANCO, DANNY
Hapoel Galil Elyon
"It was a good game. I congratulate Benetton Fribourg Olympic. The team showed some improvement. We missed our qualification in the game against Antwerp Giants. We improved too late but we have a good potential."

Players

ESTERKAMP, DAVID
Benetton Fribourg
"They played well, improved a lot and did a good job. Their offense was very efficient and they had a high percentage of success. In the Swiss championship we can play well 25 minutes but in the ULEB cup it isn't enough. We are not able to finish games."
NIXON, AARON
Hapoel Galil Elyon
"A game with a lot of ups and downs. We played together and improved in the game."
