THE TAKE

ULEB Cup title contenders Akasvayu Girona look poised to grab their second straight victory in Group C as they welcome to Spain the winless Hanzevast Capitals. Head coach Pedro Martinez's team bounced back from their two-point loss at Galatasaray to hammer Hemofarm Stada, winning the battle of the boards 47-33 and hitting 55% of their shots. All 11 players scored and grabbed at least one rebound while holding the Serbs to 29% shooting. Power forward Jackson Vroman (17 points and 10 points) and center Marc Gasol (15 points) controlled the blocks for the Spaniards, who should have little trouble against Hanzevast. The Dutch champions dropped to 0-2 after getting beaten easily by Galatasaray. Head coach Josep Claros' team was out-rebounded 38-28 and made less than 35% of their shots. Point guard Alton Mason is the only player to score double figures in both games though he has struggled from the field in both games. But Claros really needs his defense to pick things up, as Hanzevast's two opponents have shot 55% and 61% from the field. That does not translate to winning basketball.

Akasvayu Girona of Spain moved into a four-way tie for first place in Group C when it overwhelmed visiting Hanzevast Capitals of Holland by 96-63 on Tuesday. Akasvayu improved to 2-1, the same record as Galatasaray Cafe Crown, Spirou Charleroi and BC Hemofarm Stada. Hanzevast is winless at 3-0 and occupies last place in the group.Jarod Stevenson paced the victors with 14 points, while Fernando San Emeterio added 12, Arriel McDonald 11 and Roman Montañez 10. Ivan Radenovic, Vroman Jackson and Marc Gasol led the hosts to a 44-25 advantage in rebounds. For Hanzevast, Guido Grunheid tallied 15 points, while Kevin Melson picked up 13 and Rogier Jansen 12.

Akasvayu lulled the visitors with a quiet first couple of minutes that led to a 5-5 tie before the hosts exploded with a 23-2 run to take over the game entirely. Five different scorers - Gasol, Montañez, Vroman, San Emeterio and Victor Sada - shared in that splurge, and by the time Jansen tried to help shoot Hanzevast out of it, the first quarter had ended 32-13. Akasvayu let its veteran corps of Darryl Middleton, Predrag Drobnjak and McDonald safeguard the lead throughout the second quarter until Montañez and San Emeterio combined for 7 points in the last minute that left the hosts ahead by 50-24 at halftime. The third quarter was more of the same, with Vroman, McDonald and Stevenson quickly shooting Akasvayu ahead by 58-26. Melson put up a stand with 6 consecutive points for Hanzevast but the visitors couldn't cut into a lead that stretched to 74-42 after 30 minutes. The fourth quarter amounted to a trading of baskets, with Hanzevast never getting closer than 30 points and Akasvayu content to cruise to its second Group C victory without using anyh player more than 24 minutes and most for 18 or fewer.

Head Coaches

MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Akasvayu Girona
"It's been a game that we dominated from the very beginning. We have played with intensity and all the players have brought something to the game, today they are going home with the feeling of having done a good job. Now we have to think about the next game and it's necessary to be prepared. It's always important to respect our rivals and try to do our best."
CLAROS, PEP
Hanzevast Capitals
"There was not a game, when you start playing relaxed and missing three of your key players and the others are not enough to fight hard, it's impossible to win the game. We couldn't play at their level."

Players

MONTAÑEZ, ROMAN
Akasvayu Girona
"It's been a game in theory against a weak rival. We started with a good defense and this permitted us to achieve a 20-points gap on the first quarter, and we have maintained our intensity but it was difficult when you have so many points of difference, but we have played a very good game."
HEINEN, RAOUL
Hanzevast Capitals
"They worked harder and ran faster than us, they got more easy baskets. They deserved this victory."
