THE TAKE

Undefeated Group B leader Power Electronics Valencia hosts Hemofarm Stada on Tuesday in what is essentially a must-win game for the visitors. While Valencia has cruised through the regular season thus far and already clinched first place in its group, Hemofarm lost its first three games and must win to keep its destiny in its hands. The good news for Hemofarm is that it comes off its first win, an 88-76 victory over Le Mans before the winter break in which Bojan Krstovic led five Hemofarm scorers in double figures with 16 points. Valencia trailed 36-27 at halftime and needed to work hard in the second half to beat Hemofarm 68-75 when they met on opening night. Nando De Colo scored 20 and Kosta Perovic added 18 to lead Valencia to victory, while veteran Goran Jagodnik paced Hemofarm with 17. Those players figure to play major roles in this game as De Colo and Jagodnik remain their team’s top scorers. De Colo is the focal point of a deep Valencia backcourt that also starts three-point ace Rafa Martinez and brings Marko Marinovic and Thomas Kelati off the bench. De Colo will have to shake point guards Stefan Markovic and Miljan Pavkovic to get his usual point haul, while Jarod Stevenson will match up with Martinez. Hemofarm sends the veteran Krstovic to match up with rising star Victor Claver at small forward, while Jagodnik challenges Matt Nielsen at power forward. Hemofarm’s promising big man Milan Macvan could also see time against Claver in an intruiging matchup of two supreme talents, while Florent Pietrus brings muscle off the Valencia bench. At the pivot, Perovic and Sehiy Lishchuk will aim to quiet Hemofarm’s Boban Marjanovic. The hosts may have a scouting advantage with a pair of Serbian players (Perovic and Marinovic). Valencia will also need to guard against complacency, since with the top spot already wrapped up, this game has no bearing on the next stage for head coach Neven Spahija and co. Despite its size, Hemofarm enters the game ranked among the worst rebounding teams in the competition (28.3 rpg.), an issue it must address to pull off a road win in Valencia.

Power Electronics Valencia stayed undefeated in Group B by edging Hemofarm Stada 75-71 at home on Tuesday. Power VLC had already became the Group B champion and improved to 5-0. Meanwhile, Hemofarm dropped to 1-4 but still has chances to advance if it beats Triumph and and Le Mans loses at home against Power VLC. Marko Marinovic paced the winners with 23 points. Victor Claver added 14, Rafa Martinez had 13 - including all points in a game-deciding 8-3 final run - while Serhiy Lishchuk got 11 for Power VLC, that opted to sit out Kosta Perovic, Matt Nielsen and Nando De Colo. Stefan Markovic, Milan Macvan and Boban Marjanovic each had 14 points for Hemofarm while Miljan Pavkovic added 11. A 2-12 run allowed Hemofarm to get its biggest lead, 18-28, midway through the second qurter. Marinovic led a 13-0 run that helped Power VLC to get back the lead, 43-39, at halftime. Power VLC boosted its margin to 61-53 early in the fourth quarter but Macvan, Marjanovic and Markovic allowed Hemofarm to get its last lead, 67-68. Martinez stepped up in crunch time to lead Power VLC to a big home win.

Markovic got Hemofarm going with a layup and Jarod Stevenson added free throws but Lishchuk followed foul shots with a triple for a 5-4 Power VLC lead. Goran Jagodnik stepped up with a layup that a red hot Lishchuk matched with a dunk. Power VLC entered the foul bonus really early and free throws by Marjanovic and Bojan Krstovic put Hemofarm back ahead, 10-14. Martinez and Claver struck from downtown to tie the game again, 16-16. Hemofarm did not panic, however, as a dunk by Markovic and back-to-back layups by Macvan gave the guests a 18-23 edge after 10 minutes. Macvan scored again early in the second quarter and a big triple by Pavkovic made it a double-digit game, 18-28, after a 2-12 run. Lishchuk stepped up with a layup that Martinez followed with free throws to bring Power VLC back to life, 22-28. Krstovic buried a three-pointer but Power VLC found a go-to guy in Marinovic. He had 7 points in a 13-0 run that Claver capped with 4-of-4 free throws, good for a 35-31 lead. Pavkovic sank his second triple but a red hot Marinovic boosted the hosts' lead to 40-34. Markovic and Macvan stepped up for Hemofarm but Toko Shengelia allowed Power VLC to keep a 43-39 halftime edge.

Claver and Marjanovic traded layups in a low-scoring start of the third quarter. A three-pointer by Claver allowed Power VLC to get a 48-41 edge. Marjanovic dunked it and Markovic added free throws to keep Hemofarm as close as 48-45. Florent Pietrus shined with a three-pointer but Milos Borisov followed a layup with free throws to get the guests even close at 51-49. Marinovic gave Power VLC some fresh air with a three-pointer but Markovic found Marjanovic for an easy dunk and Pavkovic scored in transition for a 54-53 Hemofarm deficit. Free throws by Marinovic gave Power VLC a 56-53 edge after 30 minutes. Thomas Kelati downed a triple and Marinovic scored off a steal to boost the hosts' lead to 61-53. Macvan stepped up with a layup and Markovic buried a three-pointer to keep the guests in the game, 63-59. Marjanovic dunked it again and soon scored down low for a 66-63 Hemofarm deficit. Free throws by Macvan and a fast break layup by Markovic completed the guests' comeback, 67-67, with 4 minutes left. A foul shot by Macvan gave Hemofarm its last lead, 67-68. Martinez followed free throws with a layup but Pavkovic tied the game again, 71-71, with a minute to go. Martinez sank a jumper and soon added foul shots to seal the outcome down the stretch.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Power Electronics
“It was not a good game. We have to go on working with our philosophy. No game is easy and Hemofarm is a good team, but we didn’t play to our level.”
KARADZIC, STEVAN
Hemofarm Stada
"I want to congratulate Valencia for the victory. We played very bad defense in the second quarter, and it was a big problem for us. I think we had a chance in the first half for a good result. In the second half we played better defense, but we have a lot of problems in offense. Our three-point shooting was very bad and we had open shots. In the last two minutes we had a chance to win but we took bad decisions in offense."

Players

MARINOVIC, MARKO
Power Electronics
“It’s always important to win, we always want to win, and it’s more special because we did it with young players for many minutes. We played good basketball. For me it’s always good to do it, but I’m an 11-year pro and I know we have to stay calm and help as much as we can.”
