THE TAKE

Two teams in dire need of a win will face off in the Serbian capital on Thursday when Partizan Belgrade hosts Entente Orleanaise. Winless and tied at the bottom of the Group B standings, the two teams both know that a win could prove the turning point for the season. Partizan has played tough through the first three quarters in both its losses so far. Despite losing last week 77-67 to Efes Pilsen, the contest was not over till late, and in Week 1 the Serbian champs collapsed at home to Unicaja 64-72 after leading 52-49 with 10 minutes to play. Orleans suffered a 94-72 rout at the hands of Olympiacos in Week 1 and then fell behind early to L. Rytas last week. Partizan will look to its floor general, Bo McCalebb, to use his speed to get out on the break and get the home crowd involved as the sixth man. Partizan’s other strength is its inside game led by Aleks Maric and Lawrence Roberts. The big men are flanked by experience and youth. On one side they have 33-year-old Dusan Kecman and on the other 19-year-old Jan Vesely, Partizan’s most explosive player who can score in the halfcourt set or get out on the break and match McCalebb’s tempo. Strahinja Milosevic and center Slavko Vranes could be game-changers off the bench. Orleans point guard Aldo Curti will be charged with the difficult task of trying to slow down McCalebb, but he can count on veteran playmaker Laurent Sciarra for help in creating on the other end. Head coach Phillipe Hervelle’s best scorers have come from the wings in Austin Nichola and sixth man Cedrick Banks, while forward Justin Doellman comes off a monster night against L. Rytas with 23 points. There should also be a interesting battle in the low post between Maric and Orleans’s big men Ryan Covile and Ludo Vaty. Orleans must do a better job on the boards if it wants to pull off the road win. Orleans enters the week last in the league in rebounding and has been beaten by an average of 15 boards a game. Meanwhile Partizan committed 21 turnovers against Efes last week. Though head coach Dusko Vujosevic’s squad is among the youngest in the league, it still boasts more experience that Orleans, a fact that could help it in a close game as it targets its first victory of the season.

GAME NOTES

Partizan

Dusan Kecman has made his last 10 free throw attempts in Euroleague games.

After working on his three-point shooting over the summer, Jan Vesely has made 3 out of 4 tries in his first two games this season. Last year Vesely was 1 for 18 from downtown.

Vesely is the only player in the league to foul out of both of the first two games this season.

Entente Orleanaise

Including the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, Cedrick Banks has made at least 2 three-pointers in every game he has played this season. Banks is also perfect from the line (7 for 7) in those six games.

Including the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, Anthony Dobbins has a steal in all six games in which he’s played this season.

Marko Milic, Orleans’s most experienced Euroleague player with 86 games over seven seasons with five different teams, has only played this week’s opponent, Partizan, once. Partizan beat Milic and Union Olimpija 70-71 on the road in November 2006.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Our next Euroleague game against Entente Orleanaise must create new energy in our team. This game is real important to us and it could effect our whole season. Our last two Euroleague performances and last weekend’s game with Zadar in the Adriatic League showed that we have a lot of things to do to form the character of our team and the character of our game. That is the reason I expect this game with Orleanaise could create the new energy that we need at this moment."
HERVE, PHILIPPE
Entente Orleanaise
"Belgrade is a club that relies on youth and every year they manage to show up with a new young player who is able to be competitive in the Euroleague. We know that the stadium in Belgrade will be a superheated atmosphere and it will test our nerves to face this team that is looking for results to join the Top 16."

Players

MILOSEVIC, STRAHINJA
Partizan
“The guys from Orleans are new in this competition, but they must know they are visiting a real hot court. This game is very important to us, but we are still looking for shape. That does not mean that Entente Orleanaise is the favorite. We badly need our first Euroleague win this season, first of all because of our fans. They deserve it and our job is to fight for that. Against Unicaja we controlled the game for 35 minutes and then it was like someone switched us off. Against Efes Pilsen we had a feeling we could win. Those two games were decided in the last minutes and we lost both. Now we need a little luck and lot of self-confidence.”
SCIARRA, LAURENT
Entente Orleanaise
"Belgrade is a great team, but it is in the same situation as us with two defeats. This game is virtually the last chance for us. We come into a very hot stadium with a great atmosphere. This club is a school for European basketball. Many big names have come out of Belgrade. It also has a great coach. It will not be an easy game, but we must continue to hope to qualify for the Top 16."
Aleksandar Maric - PartizanPartizan Belgrade picked up its first win of the Euroleague season on Thursday by outlasting Entente Orleanaise 78-71 at Pionir Arena. Aleks Maric scored 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds – including an offensive rebound and a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left that wrapped up the win. Partizan improved to 1-2 in Group B and will look for another win when it visits Lietuvis Rytas next week. Orleans is now the lone winless team in the group at 0-3 and will seek its maiden win when it hosts Unicaja next week. Partizan led by just 2 entering the fourth quarter, but Bo McCalebb accounted for all the points – scoring 5 and assisting on 2 others – in a 7-0 run over the first two minutes of that fourth quarter and Orleans never fully recovered. The quests got back within 74-71 late only to see McCalebb and Maric seal the win. McCalebb finished with 15 points and Dusan Kecman scored 14 for the winners. Justin Doellman led Orleans with 16 points and 8 rebounds, Ludo Vaty had 14 and 7 and Cedrick Banks tallied 11 in defeat.

An inside basket by Vaty got Orleans on the board first, but Jan Vesely copied his post play and did him a foul shot better for Partizan's first lead. Dueling dunks by Vaty and Maric continued the scoring inside until Doellman aced his first chance at a triple put the guests up 5-7. His rebound and fastbreak pass to Austin Nichols added to the lead, then Doellman was on the receiving end of a steal and fastbreak layup to force a Partizan timeout at 5-11. The hosts responded with a triple by Kecman, who didn't wait long to strike from the arc again to pull the hosts within 11-13. This time, Orleans had an answer from deep in Banks, but Maric was ready with another dunk at 13-16. Soon, Strahinja Milosevic was making the game-tying layup for Partizan, and despite put back by Doellman, Branislav Dekic drilled a triple from the top for a new Partizan lead, 19-18. Laurent Sciarra and Nichols sent Orleans back in front from the foul line, before Aleksandar Rasic used a single shot from the arc to forge a 22-22 tie after 10 minutes.

A sharp-eyed Kecman opened the second quarter from downtown for another Partizan, igniting the crowd, but Orleans newcomer Marko Milic took 2 points back with a jumper. Maric and Stefan Sinovec kept working inside for Partizan, whose defense held steady as Vesely dunked and Sinovec made it a 9-0 run to a double-digit lead, 34-24. Banks revived Orleans with a corner triple and Vaty got the guests a little closer, 36-29. After some free throws, Doellman would shoot the guests within 39-33, but Lawrence Roberts fed big Slavko Vranes for an easy dunk then as Partizan steadied itself. Not so the home team's bench, as free throws by Vaty at 43-37 were followed by a technical foul in the half's last minute on Partizan head coach Dusko Vujosevic, letting Nichols hit free throws, making it 43-40. McCalebb cheered the fans, however, as he stole and hit a tough layup that left a 45-40 halftime score.

Ludovic Vaty - Entente OrleanaiseRyvon Covile put a quiet first half behind him and started the third quarter with a pair of baskets to get Orleans within 1. Maric answered back for Partizan, but Banks stepped up with a basket and triple to give Orleans its first lead since the first quarter. Maric put the hosts back on top only for Doellman to make it 50-51. The momentum stayed with the guests as Anthony Dobbins dished to Vaty for a two-handed slam. After a Partizan timeout, Vaty was in the right place at the right time to pick up a loose ball and throw in a hook shot. Kecman revived the hosts with a three-pointer from the corner and Orleans suffered a setback when Vaty was called for his third foul. Maric tied the score at 55-55 from the line. Sciarra put Olreans back ahead with a pair of free throws, but McCalebb darted through the Orleans defense for a basket and Dekic drilled a crucial three to put Partizan on top. McCalebb sank 2 free throws, however Adrien Moerman beat the buzzer from downtown to make it 62-60 heading into the deciding quarter.

McCalebb drove into Milic, drew a foul and hit 2 more free throws to keep Partizan in control as the fourth quarter got underway. He took a pass from Vranes and converted a basket-plus-foul on the next possession to stretch the lead to 7. The momentum was completely with the hosts by this point and a Vranes slam brought the crowd to its feet. Following an Orleans timeout, Aldo Curti banked in a triple that revived the visitors’ hopes. Covile threw in a hook shot to make it 69-65. Lawrence Roberts corrected his own miss, but Curti assisted Covile to keep Orleans within 4. Maric scored an important basket inside, but after both teams came up short at the free-throw line, Nichols drilled 2 free throws to make it 74-71. McCalebb rescued Partizan with another layup. Orleans same good fortune turn bad when Aleksandar Rasic missed twice from the line, but Maric grabbed the offensive rebounds, drew a foul and made 2 free throws with 23 seconds left. Doellman missed a three and Partizan was able to run out the clock for its first win.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"We have new team, a lot of new players and many players in new roles and it is obvious, first of all in offense. My players needed that win so bad. I want to thanks our fans. Without their help we could not play with so much energy. Our captain [Peter] Bozic is injured, [Dusan] Kecman was ill, center [Aleks] Maric was injured too. Orleanaise is an inconvenient team. They play on visiting court as if they are at home and that type of play surprised Benetton in the qualification rounds. We finally booked our firs Euroleague win this season, which means we remains in competition for the Top 16. I am sure we will get better from game to game."
HERVE, PHILIPPE
Entente Orleanaise
"I cannot be satisfied because we lost. I am frustrated and the reason is that we played such poor defense in the first half. Just like we did in our last Euroleague game. We are playing for the first time in a competition like this and it is real big task for our players. Congratulations to Partizan for the win they deserved."

Players

MARIC, ALEKS
Partizan
"This is a very important win, important to all of us. Now our self-confidence is rising. If you fight hard for each ball, you should win at the end."
MILIC, MARKO
Entente Orleanaise
"Before the game I was joking and told my teammates that Partizan fans are more dangerous than the swine flu. Unfortunately I was right. They were driving the Partizan players, but we had our chances too. I think we need more experience."
