THE TAKE

FMP Zeleznik looks to make another run at the ULEB Cup when the Group B season gets underway against WTK Anwil Wloclawek in Serbia on Tuesday. The always young and talented side has gotten off to a fine 2006/07 season, leading the Adriatic League with a 6-1 mark. However Anwil has been solid as well despite a recent loss, co-leading the Polish Leage after four games. Based on last season, FMP is the clear favorite, as it went 6-0 on its home floor, while Anwil was winless in five games on the road. Guard Aleksandar Rasic has led the boys from FMP this far, while Zoran Erceg has become a force in the paint. Anwil is also a rather young side, boosted by veterans Mark Dickel and Andrzej Pluta on the perimeter and centers Brandon Kurtz and Dusan Bocevski inside. The game will be a test for the FMP big men Erceg, Predrag Samardziski and Mladen Pantic, who'll need to cope with wily Kurtz and Bocevski, as well as power forward Said Hajric. The matchup between Rasic and Dickel could also produce something special. However it could be the other members of the backcourts that ultimately must rise to the occasion. For the hosts, that means Branko Cvetkovic, Bojan Krstovic and Milos Teodosic, while Anwil will turn to swingman Gatis Jahovics or forward Zbigniew Bialek in hope of finding extra points. Points may be at a premium in this game, leaving a lot on the shoulders of the point guards. But with so many young players on the floor, the key to the game might not be which team is more talented but rather which can better withstand the pressure of opening night.

Predrag Samardziski FMP Zeleznik The ULEB Cup's longest-standing club applied all its experience in the home opener on Tuesday as BC FMP blasted visiting Anwil Wloclawek 90-61 in Belgrade. FMP goes 1-0 in Group B, while Anwil will have to turn things around quick. Even playing without injured starters Branko Jorovic and Mladen Pantic, FMP took control and led by 20 points at halftime. Branko Cvetkovic paced the winners with 17, while Bojan Krstovic added 13, Predrag Samarziski 12, Dragan Labovic and Zoran Erceg 11 each. The defense of FMP limited Anwil to just two double-digit scores, Andrzej Pluta with 14 points and Brandon Kurtz with 11. FMP drilled 12 of 26 three-pointers and had 10 assists to just 7 for Anwil.

Samardziski and guard Nemanja Protic stepped into the starting lineup for FMP and helped the hosts race ahead 8-2. Samardziski hit 2 easy baskets early and Protic hit from inside and outside the arc to boost the lead to 16-7. Anwil answered with lay up from Kurtz and three-pointer from Pluta but in the final minutes of first quarter Krstovic entered and showed his talent by scoring a triple and two layups. FMP led 25-16 after 10 minutes. Kurtz of Anwil opened second quarter with free throws, but Aleksandar Rasic scored another triple as FMP took its first douible-digit lead 28-18. Krstovic and Cvetkovic added another pair from downtown as the lead stretched to 40-20 as Cvetkovic put back an offensive rebound and Erceg scored from the paint. Cvetkovic added another triple to cap a 21-4 run and FMP led 46-22. Gatis Jahovics revived Anwil but Krstovic hit another bomb. Anwil then tried with zone defense and managed to score 4 more free throws. FMP, however, was far from done as Cvetkovic and Erceg concluded first half with easy points for a 50-30 advantage after 20 minutes.

In the opening minutes of the second half Anwil woke up and after a 3-7 run cut the hosts lead to 53-37. Erceg and Samardziski reestablished 20 points lead for the local side and the guests from Poland were helples against run-and-gun game of FMP. The gap between the teams grew wider and wider, soaring to 66-40 in minute 37. To close out the third quarter Samardziski and Djordje Micic made it even bigger when they scored in the paint and from behind the line, leaving a 73-43 FMP after 30 minutes. The last 10 minutes seemed a chance to work for the young and inexperienced FMP team, until the guests from Anwil showed otherwise, opening the quarter with a 4-15 run. But that was Anwil's last gasp in Belgrade. Labovic scored consecutive triples and the story of the first ULEB Cup game in Belgrade this season was over. FMP led 86-59 with 3 minutes to go. Labovic sealed the victory with 4 points from the line and FMP booked a 90-61 victory.
