THE TAKE

One of the leaders in Group G is going to fall as BC Kalev/Cramo hosts a showdown of 3-1 teams when ASCO Slask Wroclaw comes to Estonia. Coach Veselin Matic's Kalev returned to its winning ways by beating Ludwigsburg at home. Center Travis Reed scored 27 points, shooting guard Valmo Kriisa added 20 and small forward Kristjan Kangur chipped in 19 as Kalev shot 54% from the field. That number would have been higher, but Matic's marksmen made just 5-of-19 (26%) from downtown, allowing Ludwigsburg to stay in the game. Matic can be happy about his team committing just 10 turnovers. But he undoubtedly wishes he could get more production from his very thin bench - as small forward Rait Keerles's nine points were the only scoring from Kalev's reserves. That may not bode well should the Estonians get into foul trouble against Slask. The Polish team also improved to 3-1 with a home win, easing past Asvel Basket thanks to a 16-point lead after the first quarter. Point guard Rashid Atkins has steadily improved and collected 25 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals in the victory. And shooting guard Torrell Martin added 13 points. Coach Andrzej Adamek's team did a good job handling the ball, committing just 10 turnovers. And the Polish side did not allow the French to find any rhythm offensively as Asvel shot just 42% from the floor and committed 20 turnovers. The winner of this game will have the inside track in the race for one of the three automatic spots in the elimination round.

Rashid Atkins scored 23 points to lead Asco Slask Wroclaw to a huge 61-79 road win at BC Kalev/Cramo in a Group G top-of-the-table clash on Tuesday in Tallinn, Estonia. Asco Slask now has sole possession of first place at 4-1, while Kalev dropped to 3-2, where it is joined by Gran Canaria and Asvel Basket. Slask visits Gran Canaria in another tough encounter next week, while Kalev travels to Greece to face Panionios On Telecoms. Jared Homan added a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds for Slask, while Dominik Tomczyk chipped in 9. Travis Reed amassed 16 points and 8 boards for Kalev, Kristjan Kangur bagged 13 and Rait Keerles had 12.

A Tomczyk jumper from mid range gave Slask an early 2-7 margin. Kangur sparked a 7-0 run to put the hosts on top, before the teams started exchanging baskets and the score was tied at 15-15 with three minutes left in the first quarter. Radoslaw Hyzy highlighted a 0-8 spurt with 4 points as Slask climbed to a 15-23 advantage after 10 minutes. The visiting side opened the second quarter with a a 7-0 run to take its first double-digit margin on a Dawan Robinson jumper. Kangur ended six scoreless minutes for BC Kalev with a basket in the open court, but Atkins and Homan fueled Slask to a 27-41 halftime lead. Back from the locker rooms, Tomczyk hit again from downtown as Slask's lead grew to 34-52. Bojan Pelkic cut it to 40-54, but Slask finished the period in control, 45-59. Homan nit another jumper for a 46-63 margin for Slask, which rejected all attempts by Kalev to get back in the game and coasted to the win.

Head Coaches

MATIC, VESELIN
BC Kalev/Cramo
"We did not start the game right. We only played well for about seven or eight minutes. After that, they went ahead. I can point tot he three-point shots after one half: 1 of 12. It's also not easy to finish a game with four of your players having three points. From outside we had problems, and inside, everything was really tight with Slask's defense. We couldn't find a way to get the ball in there. We didn't have a fastbreak because we didn't win the rebounding. And Slask took 14 more two-point shots than us. That's too big a difference."
