THE STAKES

In this unprecedented showdown between powerhouse clubs, Gran Canaria hopes to use home-court advantage to remain undefeated and solidify its chances to reach the next round, while Banvit wants to grab a second win to stay in the hunt. The fans who normally pack the Centro Insular de Deportes are a sixth man for Gran Canaria 2014.

THE TAKE

The main duel will be under the boards, with Gran Canaria’s Juan Palacios and Sitapha Savane battling Chuck Davis and Lance Williams. Banvit has done little on the offensive glass thus far, averaging only 8 rebounds in that category. The matchup at shooting guard is a special one, as Gran Canaria’s Taurean Green takes on Baris Ermis. The host’s will need better production at the foul line, where they are only shooting a little over 62%.

Javier Beiran - Gran Canaria 2014 (photo Gran Canaria)Gran Canaria 2014 took firm hold of first place in Group E with a 3-0 record after it dominated Banvit 85-61 at home Tuesday night at Centro Insular de Deportes in Las Palmas, Spain. The hosts took their first double-digit lead in the second quarter and held it for most of the game before turning it into a rout towards the end. A 20-6 assists differential led to good looks from downtown for Gran Canaria, which made 11 of 16 from beyond the arc compared to Banvit’s 3 of 15. Javier Beiran led the winners with 14 points, Xavi Rey had 12 points and Roman Martinez added 11. Chuck Davis paced the losers with 12 points.

Two players accounted for the opening 12 points as Javier Beiran buried two triples and a foul shot for Gran Canaria and Chuck Davis put in a layup and free throws for Banvit for the hosts to take a 7-5 lead. The teams exchanged fast-paced baskets, including three-pointers by Tomas Bellas and Baris Ermis to put Gran Canaria up 14-10. The scoring continued in the paint on layups by Gran Canaria’s Spencer Nelson and Roman Martinez and Banvit’s Keith Simmons and Lance Williams, which pushed the score to 19-14. The quarter ended with the hosts further on top, 21-14, thanks to free throws by Bellas. Taurean Green opened the second 10 minutes by draining a triple to open a double-digit margin. Three minutes went by before a Martinez layup followed by an Erol Can Cinko three-pointer and a Simmons layup made it 26-21. Free throws and an inside basket each by Spencer and Xavi Rey moved the score to 33-24. The hosts widened the lead to 37-24 on a jumper by Rey and layup by Juan Palacios. After Ermis came up with two baskets, Beiran ended the half with a driving basket as Gran Canaria held on to a double-digit lead, 37-28.

The teams only managed 2 points each in the first four minutes, then Rey dunked the ball twice for Gran Canaria and Davis put in a layup to push the score to 45-32. Spencer added another layup, then Williams and Kenan Bajramovic accounted for Banvit’s next 6 points to cut the lead to single-digits, 47-38. But the hosts opened the margin again as Michael Bramos and Savane Sitapha scored down low and Green drained a triple that widened Granca’s lead to 55-40. Free throws by Banvit’s Erkan Veyseloglu and a Bajramovic layin sliced the margin to 55-44 at the 30-minute mark. The hosts kept scoring as Martinez and Marquez Haynes opened the fourth with consecutive three-pointers to extend the lead to its biggest yet, 61-44. he lead stayed at the same distance until 66-48, when Gran Canaria piled on the points big-time as Martinez, Beiran and Green rained down three-pointers to end the game in a rout, 85-61.
