THE STAKES

Oostende got its first victory under new coach Dario Giergja, and would like to leave the competition with a big win against the Spanish powerhouse. Valencia is already qualified but needs to win the game to finish first. However, they can also finish first if they and Asvel both lose. Valencia added forward Zarko Rakocevic to its roster.

THE TAKE

The standout matchups are between veteran sharpshooters Veselin Petrovic and Rafa Martinez, and talented forwards Kennedy Winston and Nando De Colo. Valencia’s deep bench could make the difference.

Quotes Head Coaches

GJERGJA, DARIO
Telenet Oostende
"Valencia is a Euroleague level team. They are covered on every position with 2 or 3 players. It will be a good test for us to see how we can handle a top team. It will also be a reward for the players who have showed character in the last two and a half weeks, for them to see where they are standing."

"This game does not count for anything else than team prestige. It has to be considered an honor to play a team like Valencia, a respectable team with Spanish, Euroleague and Eurocup tradition. This is what basketball is all about. Try to play such a team at your best. In Valencia we were able to compete for 35 minutes. Now we have to add an extra 5 minutes of concentration. Everybody in the team wants to win this game."
Kennedy Winston - Telenet Oostende (photo Telenet Oostende)Telenet Oostende finished its 2011-12 Eurocup season with a prestigious home win by downing Valencia Basket 87-83 at home on Tuesday. Djordjevic had 5 points in a 9-0 run that sealed the outcome, 82-74, enough for Oostende to control the game until the final buzzer.

Rakocevic shined with a tip-in but Winston and Booker led an 8-0 run that Sakota capped with free throws for a 40-36 Oostende lead. A layup by Rakocevic fixed the halftime score at 40-38.

Winston hit free throws right after the break and a long jumper by Djordjevic made it a six-point game, 44-36. Rakocevic scored down low but Quentin Serron matched that with a layup. Martinez nailed a triple but erased Sakota's layup-plus-foul with another shot from downtown for a 49-46 Valencia deficit. Rakocevic took over with an off-balance basket but Serron and Sakota allowed Oostende to regain the lead, 52-49. Djordjevic struck twice from downtown but Martinez and Kuksiks kept the guests ahead, 70-72. Sakota buried a three-pointer and even when Rakocevic scored again, Katnic and Djordjevic made Valencia call timeout at 77-74. Head Coaches

GJERGJA, DARIO
Telenet Oostende
"Both teams have serious problems because of injuries. I would have liked to see both teams complete and would have been interested in the outcome of that game as Valencia is a Euroleague level team. With all respect to Valencia, I want to congratulate my players because of the attitude they showed tonight. Who ever stepped on the court, gave all his best."
OLMOS, FRANCISCO
Valencia Basket
"Without taking away any credit from Oostende's victory, tonight we were a team with a lot of problems, leaving 4 guys in Valencia because of injuries and missing tough guys here. I am happy with the game of my team tonight. They fought until the last minute for victory."

Players

SAKOTA, DUSAN
Telenet Oostende
"We talked about this before the game. It was very important for us to continue the way we have been playing the last 3 games, even if tonight we were facing a great opponent. It's a great opportunity to play a team like Valencia and to end with two Eurocup wins in a road before the break gives us a great feeling."
