THE TAKE

Partizan hosts DKV Joventut Badalona on Wednesday night with third place in Group B on the line in a matchup at Pionir Arena in Belgrade, Serbia. Partizan was within a Vonteego Cummings buzzer-beating three-pointer of upsetting Maccabi Tel Aviv and earning a share of third along with Joventut in the last game before the winter break, but settled for an 85-83 defeat that saw the Serbian champs drop to 4-5. Joventut has won three of its last four to improve to 5-4. Joventut hammered Partizan 82-51 when they met in November in their first matchup since the 1992 Euroleague championship game. Lubos Barton led Joventut with 18 and Andy Betts and Rudy Fernandez added 16 each in that game as Partizan self-destructed with an awful shooting performance – 18.7% of threes and 55.5% from the line – and 22 turnovers. Partizan has a full roster available for the game, though three starters – big men Predrag Drobnjak and Kosta Perovic and shooting guard Uros Tripkovic – had to skip last week's Adriatic League All-Star Game with sprained ankles. On the other hand, Joventut welcomes Betts back from a knee injury that caused him to miss six games, but will be without forward Andrew Sullivan, who will miss his first game this season through injury. This game features matchups of some of the league's deepest frontlines and youngest rising stars. With the 2.18-meter Roberto Duenas, 2.17m Andy Betts (11 ppg., 1 bpg.) and Robert Archibald (8.7 ppg., 5 rpg.), Joventut is one of the few teams that can matchup physically with Partizan's 2.17m Perovic (10.8 ppg., 7 rpg., 1.7 bpg.), 2.13m Drobnjak (16.6 ppg., 7.6 rpg.) and Nikola Pekovic. On the wings, Joventut runs with world champion Rudy Fernandez (15.1 ppg.), Barton (11.3 ppg.) and teenager Ricky Rubio (4 apg., 4.3 spg.) – the Euroleague steals leader – who'll go head-to-head with Tripkovic (8.7 ppg.), Dusan Kecman and Milenko Tepic. Cummings (12.1 ppg., 3.9 apg.) will face Joventut's wily veteran Elmer Bennett (8.7 ppg., 3.1 apg.) at the point guard spot. With the biggest guys banging inside, it could end up being the slightly smaller forwards that have the biggest impact on the game. Joventut's leading rebounder Charles Gaines (9.1 ppg., 6.6 rpg.) and Partizan sub Luka Bogdanovic are both worth keeping an eye on in this encounter.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"All our games in Euroleague so far were decided by one ball except the game with Joventut. This is the team that plays the fastest basketball in Europe. The basement is aggresive play in defense that forces opponent to make mistakes and that allows a lot of fastbreaks. There are no superstars except Rudy Fernandez but the team is excellently balanced. The win over Unicaja in the last Euroleagues game tells all about Joventut's quality. But they are not unbeateable. We have to control the rhythm of the game and play with less turnovers. I do hope that we are able to win with the help of a sold out Pionir Arena."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"Our first game against Partizan was one of our best games of the season. They are a fast team and I expect a big atmosphere in their arena, so let's see if we are able to repeat a similar game to the one of the first leg. They are undoubtedly a young team, which probably doesn't have enough experience to win games on the road but at home they perform really well. We still have some physical problems with players like Drew Sullivan, who still cannot practice; Andy Betts who keeps improving little by little and Ferran Laviña, even though the latter is feeling better."

KECMAN, DUSAN
Partizan
"Joventut is a kind of a strange team. If you look at the roster you would never say they are one of the Euroleague greats. But they play the best basketball in our group together with Panathinaikos. Aggressive defense and dangerous fastbreaks. In our first game Joventut dominated. We shall try to take revenge. I don't think this is the key game for us but our win would be the step to the safe road to Top 16."
VAZQUEZ, PACO
DKV Joventut
"We will face a team with a big advantage of its home crowd. Partizan plays well at home and their fans are really impressive. At home they feel more confident and comfortable. We have to travel thinking about doing things right, with the same intensity as in the last games. If we play aggressive we will possibly have a chance to take the win back home, even though I think the margin by which we won at home cannot be repeated."
Rudy Fernandez - DKV Joventut DKV Joventut made a major move towards the Top 16 by defeating direct Group B rival Partizan on the road Belgrade by 74-83 on Wednesday. The outcome pushed Joventut to a 6-4 record and at least third place in the group standings while it dropped Partizan to 4-6 and at best a share of fourth place. Rudy Fernandez fired in 26 points for the winners, including 5 of 9 triples. Elmer Bennett added 14 ponts and Paco Vazquez 11 for Joventut. For Partizan, Vonteego Cummings led the way with 21 points on 4-of-8 three-point shooting and 6 steals. Predrag Drobnjak was the only other host player in double digits with 10 points. Partizan, backed by an impressive crowd, dominated the first half and still led by 5 points going into the final quarter. A back-and-forth struggle that included 6 consecutive three-point shots made by the two teams saw Joventut pull ahead late on heroics by Fernandez and then guard the lead with great free throw shooting at the finish.

A seven-meter shot by Cummings gave Partizan an early 3-0 lead. Dusan Kecman added a jumper for the hosts, but Fernandez hit his first triple for the visitors. Bennett and Fernandez then stitched together 5 straight points before Robert Archibald scored his first points to give Joventut its first lead, 9-10. Archibald also forced Partizan center Kosta Perovic into a couple of fast personal fouls and he was replaced by Nikola Pekovic. Joventut played with high pressure on Partizan's guards in the middle of the court, but Drobnjak found the answer and scored 4 points to put the hosts ahead again. After the fans in Belgrade welcomed teen star Ricky Rubio, Partizan veteran Petar Bozic welcomed him in his own way, with a bomb from downtown that put the hosts up 16-12. Joventut struck back with 0-5 run and then the teams traded the lead until finally Pekovic scored twice from the line and added a layup to leave Partizan in front, 22-21, after 10 minutes.

Vonteego Cummings - PartizanJoventut started the second quarter with more aggresiveness on defense and the Partizan guards had lot of problems protecting the ball. Joventut managed to hold the hosts scoreless for more than 3 minutes but the result was a slim 22-23 lead. Finally, Kecman scored to put Partizan up again, then added another basket for the hosts. Partizan forced play into the paint, where Drobnjak and Perovic dominated. Drobnjak also showed his shooting form behind the arc to push the hosts ahead by 29-23. Luka Bogdanovic ended a 9-0 Partizan run with a slam, but Lubos Barton and Paco Vazquez responded with 5 straight points for Joventut. Andrew Betts joined them with layup as Joventut's run reached 0-7. Milenko Tepic then stepped up for Partizan with a bomb to make it 34-31, to which Bogdanovic added his first triple as replacement for guard Uros Tripkovic, who injuried his back shortly before tipoff. A few moments later, Bogdanovic netted his second triple and Partizan strolled into the half ahead by 41-34.

The second half started with a jumper from Bennett and another by Vazquez as Joventut quickly got back within 41-40. Partizan missed chances to score until Cummings denied the visitors the lead, but soon Joventut tied it up, 43-43. Betts and Charles Gaines missed twice and Partizan was leading again. Fernandez tied again with a three-point play but on the other side Bozic fired another bomb, which pumped up a soldout Pionir Arena. Marcelo Huertas and Bozic exchanged jumpers. Partizan still had problems in transition due to Joventut's aggressive defence, but managed to retain a 55-51 lead after three quarters.

Rubio opened final quarter with fastbreak points for the visitors, and then Betts forged a 51-51 tie from the foul line. Cummings and Bennett traded triples but Novica Velickovic added one more for Partizan. Bennett and Cummings continued the three-point shootout, which ended with a bomb from Fernandez, the sixth in a row between the teams. The score was tied at 64-64. After more than 20 minutes without it, Joventut took the lead again on a basketb by Betts. It lasted only until Cummings fired again from the arc to make it 67-66. Fernandez netted 2 of 3 free throws to take back the advantage for Joventut, but Cummings gave his team another lead with 3 minutes left. A minute later the game was still open when Fernandez and Barton combined on 4 perfect free throws. The crucial basket came with 90 seconds, when Fernandez gave the visitors a 69-74 lead. When Pekovic lost the ball and Vazquez was cool-handed at the free throw line, Joventut was on its way to victory. Drobnjak scored from behind the arc, but it was too late as Bennett and Barton made sure at the foul line of Joventut's major road.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"We did not play as hard as the importance of the game required. We also had problems with Perovic and Tripkovic injuries. We were prepared for the pressing from Joventut but I think 21 turnovers are too many. The key of the game was the begining of the third period when we scored 3 triples in a row but we let Joventut players to do the same. In the final period Joventut scored 32 points. In the whole first half they scored 34. That shows how bad defense we played in those minutes. Oue job to reach Top 16 is much harder but it is not impossible."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"We are very happy for the win because only Panathinaikos beat Partizan on this floor. In the first half we had a lot of problems and we played worse and worse as time passed. But Partizan did not take huge leading margins and we managed to catch them in the second half when we played with high intensity. The hosts gave us the chance and we took it."

Players

BOGDANOVIC, LUKA
Partizan
"It is true that we are not happy with that loss. The decision came in the final period when we had lack of concentration. We lost the game but I think we still have the chances for the Top 16."
BETTS, ANDY
DKV Joventut
"Very important win to us. It was hard to play here in front of the fans like Partizan has. We are very happy. In the second half we played much better in defense and when Rudy Fernandey is shooting like he did we had to win the game."
