THE TAKE

Aris TT Bank looks to make its move in the Group B standings when it hosts co-leader Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius on Wednesday at the Alexandrion Melathron in Thessaloniki, Greece. In a tight group where only two victories separate the top five teams, Aris knows that a win here put the club in position to take a better seeding ahead of the Top 16 draw. A win could also mathematically clinch Aris’s participation in the next stage, depending upon other results. Heach coach Gordon Herbert’s team arrives after back-to-back wins to improve to 6-4. Meanwhile L. Rytas has won four in a row to climb to 8-2. When these teams met earlier this season in Lithuania, Marijonas Petravicius posted 22 points on 11-of-14 shooting and Hollis Price scored 15 and dished 7 assists to lead L. Rytas to a tough 77-70 victory. The game will feature some new faces that weren’t around for that contest as Aris added two newcomers in the past week: forward Vladimer Boisa and point guard Darius Washington. The added depth will be a big boost for the hosts, since 70% of Aris’s games thus far have been decided by 7 points or less. Meanwhile L. Rytas has since inked Jared Jordan to give Hollis Price a suitable backup at the point guard spot, while Roberts Stelmahers will be available to head coach Alexander Trifunovic for the first time this season. Despite both teams’ bolstered backcourts, the focus of this game will be in the paint. Jeremiah Massey, one of the Euroleague’s most athletic big men, will team with Hanno Mottola and Lazaros Agadakos against the likes of Petravicius, Matt Nielsen, J.P. Batista and Kenan Bajramovic. The matchups at small forward are equally as important, with Dimitrios Tsaldaris, who is coming off a career-high 4 triples and 18 points last week at Cibona, and Reyshawn Terry face Chuck Eidson and Arturas Jomantas. At the guards, Bracey Wright provides the scoring punch alongside point guard and captain Terrell Castle with veteran Giorgios Kalaitzis coming off the bench. Price leads the L. Rytas backcourt together with Mindaugas Lukauskis, with Jordan keeping him fresh. This game will have multiple X-factors, with Washington and Boisa able to change things for the hosts and Stelmahers able to bring veteran leadership if needed for the visitors. Aris’s home-court advantage always plays a role as well, making this game a potential thriller. When all is said and done, it could come down to being about the chief big men: Massey vs. Petravicius, with each team knowing that by controlling that battle, it will have a leg up all game.

Quotes Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"Lietuvos Rytas is among the top teams of our group. I know we didn't play great against Malaga and Maccabi but the team has improved a lot and this is a chance to test our shape against Lietuvos Rytas. We take one game at a time and we hope to win this game in order to ensure a spot in the Top 16. I would like to welcome both Darius Washington and Vladimir Boisa to our family. Both will be dressed for the game but it's not determined if they will play or not."
TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"Aris is a serious team. And now it's even more serious, after they had added two extra players. Thus their rotation is really deep. Of course, we don't know yet if they are going to play. Anyways, Aris has been playing solid basketball lately. They are their usual selves. They run and shoot a lot. It's obviously gonna be a good test for us. We try not to look back. Of course, we are already in the Top 16, but we enter every game fresh and try to win. This one, too. It's impossible to predict how are we gonna do in front of a full gym which is also the hottest in Europe."

Players

SERAPINAS, SIMONAS
Aris TT Bank
"Playing against Lietuvos Rytas is always a tough challenge. They used to be a traditionally tough team at home, but it’s obvious that they have improved their game on the road. It’s a team with deep roster and balance between backcourt and front line. They have tough bodies in defense and they execute well their offensive systems by passing the ball to everyone involved in the game. However, we are playing much better day by day and we are ready for another home win in front of our fans, whose support is amazing in Euroleague games. What is important is to start at full speed, focus on defense and control the tempo of the whole game."
NIELSEN, MATT
Lietuvos Rytas
"I know Aris is a good team, I've said it all season. The important thing about this game is their gym, which is one of the toughest in Europe and, obviously, gives their team some extra energy. Aris naturally is an athletic team that runs up and down a lot and their arena gives them a bonus. Everybody's saying we have to stop Massey. That's for sure, but I think Aris is better than that. Of course, Massey is a big force, he's their star, but there're others. Aris is actually a nice bunch of players. We're glad Stelmahers is finally coming back off an injury. He has shown his quality so many times that we have no doubt he's gonna be great again. He understands the game so good. Hollis Price has done a great job so far and we hope Robbie is going to step up too. However, he's not playing in Thessaloniki."
Kenan Bajramovic - Lietuvos Rytas Lietuvos Rytas rallied from a double-digit deficit in the final four minutes to edge Aris TT Bank 69-72 in Thessaloniki, Greece in Group B on Wednesday. L. Rytas improved to 9-2 and kept at least a share of the top spot in Group B. Meanwhile, Aris dropped to 6-5, but keeps all its chances to advance to the Top 16, as it will be at least fifth at the end of this round. Kenan Bajramovic paced the winners with 18 points. Hollis Price added 14, including the go-ahead layup with 19.8 seconds to go, while Chuck Eidson got 10 for L. Rytas, which trailed 64-54 with less than four minutes to go. Jeremiah Massey led Aris with 19 points, while Bracey Wright added 14. A 7-0 run that Reyshawn Terry capped with a triple gave Aris a 15-12 edge after 10 minutes. Massey and Giorgios Kalaitzis boosted the hosts' margin to 27-18, but Barjamovic, Jared Jordan and a final basket by Joao Paulo Batista got L. Rytas within 36-32 at halftime. Massey had 6 points in an 8-1 run that gave Aris a 59-50 lead early in the fourth quarter. An outstanding Eidson and back-to-back triples by Barjamovic and Price brought L. Rytas within 69-68 with a minute to go. Price scored in penetration for a 69-70 L. Rytas edge with 19.8 seconds to go. Wright missed a driving layup and Eidson sealed the outcome from the foul line.

Both teams started the game looking quite nervous and things remained scoreless for the first two minutes untill Massey opened the scoring with a free throw. Mindaugas Lukauskis and Marijonas Petravicius hit mid-range jumpers and Eidson scored a layup in transition to establish the first margin for the visitors, 1-6. However, Wright found the way to the basket for Aris and Massey added a tip-in to balance the game midway through the quarter. Shots fell for both teams for the next two minutes until Petravicius dunked the ball to put his team up 8-12, forcing Aris head coach Gordon Herbert to burn his first timeout. The hosts came off the bench with different attitude and reeled off 7 straight points capped by a Terry triple to put the home team ahead at the end of the quarter, 15-12.

Dimitrios Tsaldaris - Aris TT BankAris started the second quarter at full speed. Wright and Lazaros Agadakos started extending the lead for the hosts and Massey dunked in traffic to establish the first big margin in the game, 22-14, leaving no other choice for L. Ryts head coach Alexander Trifunovic but to call timeout. The visitors struggled offensively in the first three minutes until Bajramovic and Batista stood up and cut the damage. Aris controlled the game with Terrel Castle hitting a mid-range jumper to keep his team out of trouble, 27-18, with four minutes until the halftime whistle. But Arturas Jomantas’s triple sounded the charge for L. Rytas. The visitors stepped up with Bajramovic isolating Hanno Mottola twice to cut into the deficit, while Jordan shined by driving twice to the basket to bring his team closer within 33-30. Castle struck back from three-point range, leaving Batista to fix the final outcome of the time at 36-32.

In a game where the lead changed hands frequently, Lietuvos Rytas managed to come back early in the third quarter. Matt Nielsen tied the game and Price hit an early triple to put his team ahead, 36-37. However, the hosts reacted immediately with Mottola opening an 8-point run capped by Wright and Dimitris Tsaldaris, who traded shots from beyond the arc to give their team fresh air, 44-37, in the middle of the quarter. Price and Lukauskis tried to wake up the guests to come closer to Aris and Lietuvos Rytas charged back to the game with a 2-10 run capped by Bajramovic’s trip to the line, 46-47. Massey nailed a layup to take the lead back for the hosts late in the quarter, but Eidson drove to the baseline, dunking the ball to bring his team only a step behind Aris in the end of third quarter, 51-49.

Massey opened the scoring of the decisive quarter and soon Kalaitzis went to the foul line to increase Aris’s advantage to 55-50. Massey kept adding to the margin, as Lietuvos Rytas couldn’t find the way to the basket again during the first three minutes of the quarter. The fans put a lot of pressure upon the guests, but Bajramovic stood up again, solving the offensive problems with a jumper, 59-52. Still, Aris was unstoppable and Mottola managed to push for the first time to the double digits, 64-54, with four minutes to go. Price and Eidson drove quickly to the foul line to cut the deficit, but soon Wright answered with another triple, 69-62. However, Price took his team in his hands and netted 5 points in a row to bring his team closer, and then Bajramovic drilled another triple in transition to balance the score at 69-68. Aris was shocked by the guests’ return and committed back-back turnovers giving the chance to Price decide the game with a layup. Wright couldn’t beat the buzzer, because Eidson sent the live ball away from the basket in the last second.

Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"It’s a harmful result because we played really good basketball in the first 36 minutes of the game. However, my team was invisible in the last four decisive minutes giving the opponent the chance to gain an unexpected victory. I don’t know why we lost control in the end and failed to play tough defense and avoid turnovers. You can’t win a game against a team like Lietuvos Rytas without playing at the highest level till the final whistle."
TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"We couldn’t defend Aris’s transition game early in the match and the hosts easily scored by grabbing many offensive rebounds. What was important is that we managed to reduce the margin entering the locker rooms and were only 4 points behind at halftime. As regards the second half, my team dominated the boards, reduced our mistakes and we were confident enough to come back and win the game in the end. It’s a huge win for us in a very tough and traditional basketball court like Alexandreio. I would like to praise my players who didn’t surrender and achieved the victory in the end."

Players

MOTTOLA, HANNO
Aris TT Bank
"Today, we committed suicide. Even though we controlled the game for 35 minutes, Lietuvos Rytas stepped up in the end and stole it. Today, the guests proved why they are the best team of our group. It’s time for us to avoid such mistakes and ensure our spot in the Top 16."
NIELSEN, MATT
Lietuvos Rytas
"It's a very important win. We won a very tough game thanks to our sensational defense in the last moments. Despite being down by 10 points, our coach called a timeout and showed us the way to gain this victory. My team didn’t surrender and managed to exploit the chance and steal the game in the last shot."
