THE TAKE

Le Mans Sarthe Basket continues its hunt for a spot in the Top 16 when it hosts Dynamo Moscow in a Group A showdown on Thursday. Last week, Dynamo (7-4) qualified for the Top 16 in its debut season and probably must win in France to maintain an outside chance to catch second-place Olympiacos. Dynamo coach Dusan Ivkovic will be celebrating his 300th game on the European stage on Thursday. Le Mans (3-8) is coming off of an impressive but ultimately fruitless showing against Olympiacos, where it led in the fourth quarter, but was unable to hold on, dropping the 80-76 road decision. The best news from that game for Le Mans was the star performance of point guard Tyson Wheeler, who posted his season-highs of 20 points and 9 assists. However, Le Mans remains mired in a slump that has seen the French champs drop five straight games. Dynamo last week dumped Prokom 95-74 for its second straight big win asTravis Hansen scored a season-high 21 points in just 22 minutes. Dynamo travels to France without center Obinna Ekezie and rookie forward Andrei Ivanov, both of whom coach Dusan Ivkovic may have liked to use to wear down Le Mans's athletic frontline. The host from Le Mans boast a fine duo at the forward spots with Eric Campbell (14.2 ppg., 7.6 rpg.) and Kenny Gregory (15.9 ppg., 5.5 rpg.) complementing each other and center Sandro Nicevic (12.7 ppg., 6 rpg., 1.3 bpg.). That efficient trio shoots a combined 57.4% from two-point range. However they won't have an easy time against Dynamo's big men, Lazaros Papadopoulos (14.7 ppg., 7 rpg.), Antonis Fotsis (14.4 ppg., 5.8 rpg.) and Miroslav Raicevic, who is still finding his way after missing the start of the season with injury. A key for the home team could be to use its speed and fancy passing to create easy baskets or draw fouls on the Dynamo big men, who are thin up front without Ekezie and Ivanov. Wheeler (6.9 ppg., 3.9 apg.) leads a dynamic young Le Mans backcourt that features Pape-Philippe Amagou and Yannick Bokolo (3.2 apg.) and shooting guard Nebojsa Bogavac (9.1 ppg.). Bojan Popovic (11.5 ppg.) and Eddie Gill handle the playmaking duties for Dynamo, with Dmitri Domani and Hansen (13.9 ppg.) on the wings. Dynamo will surely have some confidence after topping Le Mans 74-57 earlier in the season in the Russian capital in a game that Papadopoulos missed, but this game could be a completely different story in France. The coaches could both play big roles as the individual matchups lend themselves to mismatches.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"Obviously, Dynamo has found a very good rhythm during these last few games. They were already very consistent defensively, and now they’re gaining offensive efficiency. Indeed, they scored almost a hundred points each of their last two Euroleague games, with Hansen looking very skillful and Papadopoulos in his best shape. For us, the win is compulsory if we want to keep on hoping for the qualification. We know the value of this opponent; nevertheless, we’ll do all our best to win. And we must, by all means, stop turning over the ball, which costs us the last two games."
IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"We will play against a very talented team that was positive surprise in the first part of the competition and has since lost some games with very close results. With more then 16 assists per game, Le Mans ranks second in the Euroleague, and our first target will be control of their fastbreak and rebounds. We are very bad in rebounds because we played many games without Papadopoulos. Now we cannot count on our other big guy, Obina Ekezie, who has some muscular problems, so I decided to leave him in Moscow, together with Ivanov. We have played three good games in this new year, two in the Euroleague and one in the Russian Superleague, and I hope that we can continue also in Le Mans. This game probably will be the last chance for Le Mans to reach the Top 16, so I know that the game will be very hard. But this is the Euroleague and, very simply, there are no easy games."

Players

BATUM, NICOLAS
Le Mans
"The match we’re going to play on Thursday against Dynamo Moscow is not devoid of consequences. Mathematically, there’s still a little chance of qualification for the Top 16, so we must preserve it, playing this match totally to win. In Moscow, we were not in a good rhythm, which enabled them to impose theirs on us. Now, we have a more accurate idea of how to deal with them."
FOTSIS, ANTONIS
Dynamo Moscow
"After our mathematic classification to the Top 16, we will play without pressure, but the game is very important for us because we need some more victories to remain third in our group, which is our new target. I know Le Mans very well: it's a good team that played an excellent game last week in Athens against Olympiacos. Le Mans must win and this is our chance, because it will not be easy for them to play under that pressure. Also, we are demonstrating in our recent games that our form is on the rise, especially on offense."
Lazaros Papadopoulos - Dynamo Moscow Dynamo Moscow needed an incredible rally and an outstanding performance from big man Lazaros Papadopoulos to edge Le Mans 69-70 on the road in France and improve to 8-4 in the Group A standings. Dynamo is third on the Group A board, just one win behind second place Olympiacos. Meanwhile, Le Mans dropped to 3-9 after losing its sixth straight game and has been mathematically eliminated from Top 16 contention. Papadopoulos led the winners with 27 points on 11-of-17 two-pointers and 8 rebounds. He scored the game's final 5 points to rescue Dynamo with back-to-back layups and the game-winning free throw with 7.7 seconds to go. Dmitri Domani and Eddie Gill each added 12, while Antonis Fotsis had 11 for Dynamo. Sandro Nicevic had 14 points for Le Mans, Kenny Gregory added 13 and Eric Campbell 11. Le Mans led for the better part of the final period and held a 67-61 edge with under 3 minutes to go. Dynamo improved its defense and forced 3 consecutive turnovers and Papadopoulos sealed an incredible game, helping the visitors complete their comeback in extraordinary fashion.

Domani got Dynamo going with a dunk off a steal, but Tyson Wheeler buried a jumper and then followed Pape-Philippe Amagou's triple with another big shot to give Le Mans a 7-2 lead. Dynamo finally found Papapdopoulos, who scored in the paint, while Domani fed Fotsis for a three-pointer that tied it at 7-7. Wheeler buried a triple from the top of the key, while Fotsis missed three times around the basket in the other end. Alain Koffi capped a 6-0 run with a jumper that gave Le Mans a 13-7 edge midway through the opening quarter. Papadopoulos and Gregory exchanged layups, and Gill fired in one from downtown to bring Dynamo within 15-12. The final minute of the period turned into a slam dunk contest. Papadopoulos, Gregory and Campbell shined with respective dunks to fix the score at 19-14 after 10 minutes.

Kenny Gregory - Le MansLe Mans kept its intense defense early in the second quarter and kept attacking the basket to go to the foul line often. As such, Nicevic scored in the middle and Yannick Bokolo and Campbell hit free throws to make it an 8-point game. Bokolo came through with a fastbreak layup to give Le Mans its biggest margin, 26-16. Gill buried a triple, but Koffi scored around the basket for a 28-19 lead. Papadopoulos followed free throws with a layup and even when Nebojsa Bogavac scored off a steal, Dynamo had found its go-to guy. Papadopoulos scored inside, and then grabbed a rebound that allowed Domani to dunk it, and then shined with a put-back layup to get Dynamo within 30-29. Nicolas Batum and Gregory stepped up with consecutive baskets, but Dynamo had gained its momentum now. Domani hit free throws, Fotsis turned a second-chance layup into a three-point play and Domani shined with his third dunk to give Dynamo a 34-36 halftime edge.

Bojan Popovic went scoreless in the opening half, but he scored his first basket right after the break. Campbell took over with a big put-back layup, which Papadopoulos erased in the other end. Nicevic made free throws, but Domani found space for another dunk for a 38-42 Dynamo edge. Amagou fired in a three-pointer and Nicevic buried a mid-range jumper to cause the guests to call timeout at 43-42. Dynamo went scoreless for more than 2 minutes until Travis Hansen stepped up with a layup for his first basket. Fotsis added a three-point play and Gill capped a 0-7 Dynamo run with free throws. Both teams had entered the foul bonus and went to the line often. Domani hit 2 for Dynamo, but Gregory and Nicevic combined for 6 to get Le Mans within 49-51. Dynamo struggled against Le Mans's physical defense, while Nicevic scored again to tie the game at 51-51 at the end of the third quarter.

A five-meter jumper by Bokolo and a free throw by Koffi caused coach Dusan Ivkovic call timeout at 54-51. Bokolo capped an 11-0 Le Mans run with a layup, before Gill finally hit a mid-range shot for Dynamo. Nicevic and Popovic exchanged layups while Bogavac made free throws to give Le Mans a 60-55 lead. Papadopoulos followed foul shots with a layup to get Dynamo within 60-59. Campbell gave Le Mans some breathing room with a put-back layup and Nicevic added free throws. Even when Papadopoulos scored again, Gregory answered from downtown to give Le Mans a 67-61 lead with less than 3 minutes to go. Dynamo was not done, however, as Hansen fired in one from downtown to get Dynamo within 69-65. Le Mans lost control and committed back-to-back turnovers, which allowed Papadopoulos to score twice and tie the game at 69-69. Once again Papadopoulos collected a key steal, drew a foul and hit the game-winning free throw with 7.7 seconds to go. Le Mans had the final possession of the game, but Fotsis had a big block on Bogavac. Nicevic grabbed the offensive rebound and missed a desperation shot at the buzzer.
